Oregon ESA 2010 BKD vertical transmission - Test of analyses for bacterial kidney disease as predictors of vertical transmission

Metadata Updated: May 24, 2025

Although the pathogen causing bacterial kidney disease is known to be transmitted from broodstock female to offspring, there is large uncertainty around the likelihood of vertical transmission. Identifying predictors of transmission by analyzing broodstock tissues for pathogen presence would provide an important management tool for hatcheries and captive broodstock programs.

This project assesses a suite of analytical methods for predictive utility by evaluating broodstock and following the infection fate of their offspring. In addition to measuring fork length (mm) & weight (g) of individual offspring, kidney tissue is analyzed for Renibacterium salmoninarum by enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), fluorescent antibody microscopy, and duplex quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Individual fish data are recorded by spreadsheet. This project is conducted by Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife in collaboration with NOAA personnel. This is a self-contained project.
