Water Resources Management Database Rio Grande/Río Bravo 2020

Metadata Updated: June 15, 2024

The Management Options Database synthesizes and documents a comprehensive set of management practices implemented by the water managers on behalf of a collective (e.g., municipal water systems, irrigation districts) or as individuals (e.g., farmers) to adapt to drought conditions in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo basin. This database provides input to implement the policies in the agent-based module of the ENVISION RGB integrated model (i.e., the range of possible decisions the agents can make in the model) and explore new scenarios of water management. It was developed drawing on the ethnographic data collected by the ethnographic team (Friedman, Paladino). Regular meetings were facilitated by the modeling team (Koch, Plassin) to integrate this qualitative information in the simulation model. The Management Options Database describes 52 different management practices categorized in ten groups of practices: (1) Irrigation and water distribution efficiency; (2) Develop access to new source of water; (3) Farmland management; (4) Sustainable farming practices; (5) Rangeland management; (6) Water rights transfer; (7) Water and river/habitat conservation; (8) Recreational activities; (9) Urban planning; (10) Border Control. For each management practice, the Management Options Database provides a set of attributes such as a textual description, which agents (in the model) can implement the practice, where in the basin they can be implemented (site attributes), under which conditions (global constraints), and what the outcomes are (with regards to land-use change, water resources conservation/withdrawal, economy wealth, and socio-cultural effects). The Management Options Database is structured as a table with each practice recorded in a row and its attributes provided in columns.
