Delete a distribution list without an Exchange subscription

My company has two Azure accounts. One is no longer used but has a custom ___domain added to it. I want to move this custom ___domain to the newer Azure account. I cannot delete the custom ___domain from the old Azure account because there is one (and only one) Exchange distribution list referencing it.

I cannot delete the Exchange distribution list because I have no existing active subscription, because we no long use this Azure account.

It would be excessive to purchase a subscription for one year just to delete this distribution list.

Can anyone help me with this problem? I need to resolve this ASAP.

Thank you very much!

    Hi @Paul Nerie

Thank you for reaching out. I completely understand how frustrating it is to be blocked from transferring a custom ___domain due to a legacy Exchange distribution list and the lack of an active subscription.

Since the ___domain is still linked to an old Azure account and cannot be removed without deleting the Exchange object, the most effective solution is to contact Microsoft Support and request manual assistance. You can do this in one of two ways, depending on your access:

If you can still sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, you can raise a support request there:

    1. Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center and click Help & support
    2. Provide the following details:
    • The custom ___domain is blocked by a distribution list.
    • There is no active subscription.
    • You need Microsoft’s assistance to remove the distribution list and release the ___domain.

If you prefer, or cannot raise the request via Admin Center, create a support ticket via Azure Portal:

    1. Go to Azure Support Portal and log in with your old Azure account credentials.
    2. In the left-hand menu, select Help + support, then click Create a new support request
    3. For issue type, choose:
    • Problem type: Technical or Subscription management
    • Service: Azure Active Directory (or Exchange Online, if available)
    1. In the description, clearly explain that:
    • You need to remove a custom ___domain
    • The ___domain is blocked by a single Exchange distribution list
    • There is no active subscription, and purchasing a new one is not feasible.
    • You are requesting assistance to remove this object and release the ___domain.

Once Microsoft removes the Exchange distribution list, follow this guide to complete the ___domain migration to your new Azure account.

Since Exchange Online objects cannot be removed without an active subscription, Microsoft Support is the best way to resolve this issue efficiently.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything else I can assist with.
