    • Agricultural Land Dynamics and Land Policy in Rural Tanzania 2016

    This data asset contains 46 tables representing the modules of an extensive household survey conducted in eight rural districts in Tanzania. Once downloaded, the tables can be combined on the 'hhid' column to provide a deeper level of analysis.

    The purpose of collecting these data was to examine the rate of land expansion of medium- and large-scale farms compared to small scale farms, look at policy implications of consequent changes in farm structure and the concentration of food production and marketed output.

    The data also aim to capture the pace of acquisition of agricultural land by medium- and large-scale investors through de facto land administration policies and the implication of such dynamics on rural youth land accessibility and out migration in the context of customary tenure systems.

    The data contain information about non-farm employment growth, farm size and efficiency, land disputes and conflicts in rural Tanzania, their causes, possible resolution mechanisms, and policy implications to land investments in Mvomero, Kilombero, Njombe, Kiteto, Magu, Moshi Rural, Mkuranga and Liwale districts of Tanzania.

    The data were collected through the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy (FSP), whose mission is to promote inclusive agrifood system productivity growth, improved nutritional outcomes, and enhanced livelihood resilience through improved policy environments. Taking a broad view of agriculture, including the farm and off-farm parts of the agrifood system, FSP strives to increase countries capacity to generate policy-relevant evidence and analysis. This knowledge, when utilized by stakeholders, will improve policy formulation and implementation throughout the food system.

    FSP works globally and in particular in eight African countries and Myanmar in Asia. The Lab is led by MSU in partnership with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C., and the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
