I just found this page. I read of the DUPLEX METHOD of finding the square root in a book on Vedic mathematics. It is a precise algorithm. Geniuses can do it mentally. It is written like a long division problem with a subtraction of the duplex from the dividend prior to subtracting the product of the root digit times the divisor (double the first digit-groups square root).
