[[WP:N]] and [[WP:RS]] are pretty clear on what makes a reliable source and how notability is asserted. In a situation like this a references tag is just a way to avoid AfD. I think we all know deep down that no one is going to add any references because you tag it. The backlog of unsourced articles is huge already.
