The settlement dates back to the [[Neolithic]]. In [[Middle Ages|medieval]] times, the town was the residence of a branch of the [[Babenberger]] family, as a result of which it got the nickname Babenbergerstadt. Through the ages, the name of the town evolved from Medilihha to Medelikch, Medling and, finally, Mödling.
In Mödling's district, which also borders the state [[Vienna]], there's probably one of the biggest shopping centers in [[Europe]]. The Shopping City Süd (SCS) was opened in 1976 and has an area of 110 000 km². There are approximately 330 schops, with 4500 employees.
