The median income for a household in the town is $17,656, and the median income for a family is $26,042. Males have a median income of $27,292 versus $19,643 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the town is $10,944. 36.2% of the population and 35.6% of families are below the [[poverty line]]. Out of the total population, 51.9% of those under the age of 18 and 30.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Although poverty is quite abundant in this town, the town is noted for its collections of what is termed as "new" and "old" money. These sources of money are found within families that have populated the town since its founding in 1900. Amoung the richest "old money" families in the town are the Butterfields (with links to the politically ambitious Jean Butterfield), Trevathans (whom own an estimated 32% of the realty and land in the town), and the Whitfields (that made their money by bringing a number of now defunct businesses to the area).
Sources of "new money" or the noveau riche of the town of Fountian are the Pittmans (who own one of the two leading community stores in the area) and the Mastersons (with notable credit going to Janet G. Masterson, a Cheif Financial Officer of the company Newell Rubbermaid). Many credit most of the economic stability to the influx of noveau riche to the area and their children. The Pittmans, are not known to have any children, however divorcee Janet Masterson is said to have a son (the product of what is rumored to be a clandestine marriage between her and construction tycoon Jean-Pierre Wooten, worth an estimated 8.8 million). It is not known how long economic stability will last in the area without another influx of economic recovery and source of money.
Elections will be held this year for another mayor, and economic recovery is slated to be the deciding factor in determining the winner.
