Trouble Downloading MERRA2 on mac

Hello,

I am trying to download subsetted MERRA2 data using a Mac (in the built-in Mac Terminal).

Unlike when I have successfully downloaded files in the past on a windows, I have being having issues creating the ".netrc" and the ".urs_cookies" files. When I enter "touch .netrc" nothing appears within the file explorer window, unlike when I do the analogous "NUL > .urs_cookies" in a windows command terminal.

I am wondering if others have had this same issue or could offer any insights for dealing with this process on a Mac.
