Mirroring artifacts in AVIRIS Classic L2 Reflectance

by piyush » Tue Jul 16, 2024 4:10 pm America/New_York

We are noticing significant image artifacts at the start / end of the various flight lines for the AVIRIS Classic L2 Reflectance products. We have downloaded the imagery and confirmed the issue using different independent software / analysis approaches. We observe these in all of the following flight lines and suspect the issue might impact the whole collection.

- f180529t01p00r06
- f180608t01p00r10
- f180608t01p00r11
- f180604t01p00r09

Is there any way we can identify impacted lines without having to download the large files and examining them manually?

Hello,

Thank you for your question regarding the AVIRIS-Classic L2 Reflectance data.
Because there a few potential collections that contain AVIRIS-Classic L2 data, can you please confirm that the data you refer to are part of the AVIRIS-Classic: L2 Calibrated Reflectance, Facility Instrument Collection?

Otherwise, we will reach out to the AVIRIS Science Team to provide a response to your inquiry and share that here.

Best wishes,
Michele

Hi Michele,

Correct. That is the product we are looking at.

Thanks

Hello Piyush,

This artifact seems to be related to a chunking scheme used in our older L2 algorithms. I am still trying to assess the extent of the impact, but I'm not aware of a way to check these without inspection.

If there is a specific list of lines you're interested in from 2018, I can start by reprocessing those for you while I continue digging.

Let me know.
Thanks

- John

Hi John,

The lines we would interested for now are:
- f180529t01p00r06
- f180608t01p00r10
- f180608t01p00r11
- f180604t01p00r09

We would definitely ingest more lines directly from earthdata cloud if we were confident that the imagery would not have artifacts.

We also noticed that there is no reflectance data available in that CMR product since 2020 whereas the AVIRIS portal advertises a lot more lines. We would be interested in the following line that is not listed

- f230925t01p00r12

Are there plans to keep this AVIRIS-Classic L2 Reflectance product up to date? We have had good success working with AVIRIS-NG data from earthdata cloud and would like to test out more AVIRIS-Classic data.

Thanks
Piyush
