MERRA-2 FAQ: What are the recommended MERRA-2 data and data services for dust storms?

Below are the variables in MERRA-2 that can be used to study large-scale dust storms at hourly or monthly time intervals:

hourly M2T1NXAER monthly M2TMNXAER table.pdf

hourly M2T1NXADG Monthly M2TMNXADG table.pdf
(38.56 KiB) Downloaded 786 times
Note:
* The collection also includes the same quantity for the dust bins 002, 003, 004, and 005. Please read here for the size of each dust bin.
**The value of the variable DUAERIDX (i.e., the dust TOMS UV aerosol Index) in the monthly collection M2TMNXADG and the hourly collection M2T1NXADG is incorrect; thus, this variable should not be used.

Some of the variables listed above can be accessed with the following data services:

Visualization and data analysis: Giovanni
Visualization: NASA Worldview

All of the variables listed above have subsetting data services, which can be accessed from the dataset landing page of the two monthly collections M2TMNXAER and M2TMNXADG, and their corresponding hourly collections M2T1NXAER and M2T1NXADG. Please refer to the following How-to documents to subset and access data:

How can I subset and download a large amount of the MERRA-2 data?

How do I obtain a time series for MERRA-2 data?

How to Use the Web Services API for Subsetting MERRA-2 Data?

How to Directly Access MERRA-2 Data from an S3 Bucket with Python from a Cloud Environment?

For additional information on MERRA-2 data, read the MERRA-2 File Specification Document first, and refer to the MERRA-2 project page.

The recommended satellites and satellite instruments that provide the best data for studying dust storms can be found in the NASA Earthdata LANCE page.
