Clarification on “Clear_sky_days” Variable in MOD11A2 Product

by xiangliu » Sat May 10, 2025 11:45 am America/New_York

Hi,

I am currently analyzing the “Clear_sky_days” variable in the MOD11A2 Eight-Day LST product. I have observed that some values for this variable exceed 8, which is unexpected given the 8-day compositing period of the product. I would appreciate any clarification you could provide regarding how these values are determined and how best to interpret them accurately.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi xiangliu,
Actually, what this is referring to is clear sky observations. There can be several observations that intersect with a pixel footprint per day. Up to 1 time per day near the equator and 15 times per day at the poles. So, over an 8-day period it could really add up, but only passes deemed clear sky are used to derive the average temperature.
Thanks,
Brett
