Backward functionality for Harmony in Earthdata Search?

by carlsopr » Thu May 22, 2025 8:48 pm America/New_York

The Harmony spatial subsetting tool has been working great, reducing file sizes from granules to my AOI, but I wonder if perhaps it doesn't work on older Modis Aqua OC files ? I have been downloading subsets of Aqua MODIS Level-2 Regional Ocean Color (OC) Data, version 2022.0, and I have been working backward from 2025 (no problem), but when I get to January 2021, the Harmony subsetted download fails.

. No problem downloading indivdual granule files, though. Thanks for your thoughts, PC

I can't say this is a problem with our data. I'd like an Earthdata Seach team member to chime in with any thoughts. I wonder if it times out?

I was able to talk to Earthdata Search team. They were able to replicate your issue. It does look like the Harmony service is having trouble with the older files. I will now need to work with my team and the service provider to correct the issue. Thank you for reporting the error.

Thank you very much for pursuing this glitch. Harmony is a very, very useful tool, and I appreciate the effort the Earthdata Search team has put into this tool, earthaccess and others. Speaking of which, would it also be possible to make some of these older datasets compatible with both Harmony AND the PO.DAAC file catenating tool? My AOI is small enough that a full year of Terra or Aqua OC data result in a netcdf file of manageable size on my desktop. I could actually avoid problems associated with file downloads completely, if I had an earthaccess recipe or template to use data on AWS to extract multiyear point data time series a la Appeears. ....And this completes my shopping list! Thanks again, PC

We are working with PO.DAAC in order for the Harmony L2 subset service to work on OB.DAAC L2 data.

Also, if you have questions about earthaccess, I would recommend you post a separate question and tag 'earthaccess' so those Subject Matter Experts can help you form queries.
