l2gen | SMOOTHING SWIR BANDS TO INCREASE SNR

by dogun » Sat Jul 15, 2017 9:36 pm America/New_York

Hi All,

I am retrieving Rrs for the first 4 visible bands and just wondering how I can increase my signal (over AERONET-OC sites). I read that smoothing the swir bands only will definitely increase SNR. But since I'm using the visible bands only, will this work for me or I can just limit my smoothing to the 4 bands of interest to me?

OR does spatial averaging option depends on the band combination I'm using (I'm using 865 nm- 1609 nm correction option).

Thanks.

Using the standard GW94 atmospheric correction approach, the aerosol components are derived using the NIR (and/or SWIR) bands.  Smoothing these will act to increase the SNR (but reduce the spatial resolution) and "smooth" the aerosol derivation.  You *can* do the same for the visible bands, but you will be losing spatial resolution.
The NIR/SWIR smoothing assumes that the aerosol properties vary less spatially than the ocean color properties...
