Ecostress - using LST data to search for cold air pools

by podmiot » Wed Apr 30, 2025 11:02 am America/New_York

The ECOSTRESS Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity Daily L2 Global 70m V001 product was discontinued for data download support in January this year (https://ecostress.jpl.nasa.gov/data). I'm looking for another ECOSTRESS LST product that I can download via AppEEARS directly into QGIS in GeoTIFF format (so that it has georeferencing). Currently, I'm only using KMZ files (https://ecostress.jpl.nasa.gov/gmapinfo), but these are RGB images without temperature data in kelvin.

Which product should I choose?

Hi,
We have several Ecostress V002 LST products available through AppEEARS, however I am not aware of a direst download into QGIS from AppEEARS. AppEEARS will output any of the following as a Geo rectified Geotiff:
https://doi.org/10.5067/ECOSTRESS/ECO_L2T_LSTE.002
https://doi.org/10.5067/ECOSTRESS/ECO_L2_LSTE.002
The L2 option would be similar to the V001 product you were using before.
Thanks,
Brett

I downloaded the LST product (ECO_L2T_LSTE.002) for areas in central Poland (Europe) from the night pass of April 27–28. However, this product is different from version 1. It only shows the warmest regions, while the cold areas—which are the ones I’m interested in—seem to be filtered out, with no data available there.

On the other hand, the LST product (ECO_L2_LSTE.002) has a "Pending" status and nothing else is happening on the AppEEARS website. Why isn’t this second product being processed on AppEEARS?

Both orders are now complete. I believe the ECO_L2_LSTE will be more like the previous V001 option. As it does not mask out clouds, it contains the cloud information but it is a seperate layer and can be used at your discretion. However, the ECO_L2G_LSTE masks out the clouds and give the pixels a NaN value. Per the Userguide: Pixels with the value 1 in the cloud layer represent detection of cloud in that pixel. Pixels with the value 1 in the water layer represent open water surface in that pixel. All tiled product data layers written in float32 contain a standard not-a-number (NaN) value at each pixel that could not be retrieved. The cloud and water layers are provided to explain these missing values.

Thank you very much, layer L2-LSTE-002 has been implemented and downloaded and contains all the information.
