NGC 20 fu scoperta il [[18 settembre]] [[1857]] da [[William Parsons]] con un [[telescopio]] [[telescopio riflettore|riflettore]] da 72 [[pollice (unità di misura)|pollici]] (182,9 [[centimetro|cm]]). Nel [[1888]] [[John Dreyer]] la incluse nel [[catalogo NGC]] con il nome di NGC&nbsp;20 e la descrisse come una debole galassia. Data la sua debole luminosità, per individuare NGC&nbsp;620 occorre un [[telescopio]] da almeno 250&nbsp;[[millimetro|mm]] di aperturadiametro. La galassia appare rotonda, con un piccolo nucleo di aspetto stellare.

Bright star 0.3 arcmin [north] of nucleus.

TYC 2264-35-1

Una stella di undicesima magnitudine dista soltanto 30 [[arcosecondo|secondi d'arco]] dal nucleo in direzione est. Sempre in direzione est, a 2,4 [[arcominuto|minuti d'arco]], si trova la stella [[Catalogo_Tycho-2|TYC]]&nbsp;2264-35-1, di magnitudine apparente 10,25<ref name="tycho">{{en}} {{cita web
