Russell frequenta inizialmente la Central High School a [[Louisville]], [[Kentucky]] nella stagione 2010-11, successivamente si trasferisce alla Montverde Academy nell'omonima città di [[Montverde]] in [[Florida]]. Nel 2014 vince il titolo statale e viene nominato per giocare al [[McDonald's All-American Game]].
