Manukyan was born in Leninakan (present-day [[Gyumri]]) in the [[Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic]], and holds a [[PhD]] in [[mathematics]] and [[physical science]]. He is married and has three children.

==Attività scientifica==

Ghazaryan fu un veterano della [[seconda guerra mondiale]]. Autore di numerosi lavori di radiofisica, tecniche di uso del laser e modulazione della luce, è stato membro della Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze dell'Armenia. Fu il fondatore della cattedra di tecnica laser alla [[Università Statale di Yerevan]] e al [[Università Statale di Ingegneria dell'Armenia|Istituto Politecnico]]. Negli [[anni 1990|anni novanta]] è stato direttore del Centro di ingegneria "Mashtots".

He was arrested in December 1988 in [[Moscow]] because he was a member of the [[Karabakh committee]] and spent six months in prison. He became Prime Minister on August 13, 1990 but resigned on November 22, 1991. After Armenia gained its independence from the [[Soviet Union]] in 1991, he was elected in parliament three times and ran unsuccessfully for [[President of Armenia]] in 1996, 1998 and 2003. Vazgen Manukyan is the Chairman of [[National Democratic Union of Armenia|National Democratic Union]] party.

==Attività politica==

Alla fine degli [[Anni 1980|anni ottanta]], unitamente ad altri intellettuali armeni, aderì al [[Comitato Karabakh]]. L'[[11 dicembre]][[1988]] venne arrestato dalle autorità insieme a tutti gli altri membri del Comitato; fu rilasciato nel maggio successivo.

Nel [[1989]] fu nominato vice presidente del Consiglio Supremo (Parlamento) della [[Repubblica Socialista Sovietica Armena]]. Tra il [[1990]] ed il [[1995]] ha guidato la Commissione parlamentare sulle scienze e l'educazione.

Negli ultimi suoi anni di vita è stato uno dei leaders del "Forum intellettuale".
