Durante questo periodo, Miller incontrò il regista esordiente [[Byron Kennedy]] durante un corso estivo di cinema nel [[1971]]: dalla loro collaborazione nacque un [[cortometraggio]], ''Violence in the Cinema, Part 1'', che fu mostrato in numerosi festival cinematografici ottenendo anche diversi premi. Otto anni dopo, il duo produsse ''Mad Max'', lavorando con lo sceneggiatore esordiente [[James McCausland]] (che appare in un breve cameo nel film).

Miller voleva che ''Mad Max'' fosse "un [[film muto]] ma gli altri produttori non volevano, così l'idea saltò. Vennero invece inserite scene frenetiche, come quelle dei film di [[Buster Keaton]] e [[Harold Lloyd]], e una narrazione molto lineare. Il regista inoltre pensò di ambientare la storia in un cupo futuro [[Distopia|distopico]], credendo in questo modo di rendere lo scenario violento del film più credibile allo spettatore.<ref name=aso/> McCausland aggiunse l'elemento della crisi energetica nel film, ricordandosi degli effetti della [[Crisi energetica (1973)|crisi energetica del 1973]] sulle bande di motociclisti australiane:
