Link interni a Wikipedia
Una degli aspetti più importanti di Wikipedia è il fatto di potere intensivamente ed estensivamente collegare voci dell'enciclopedia attraverso link presenti nel testo di altri aricoli di Wikipedia, detti quindi link interni (interni nel senso che non puntano a pagine su altri siti o progetti). Questi link ci forniscono il modo per correlare velocemente pagine, costituendo una notevole dose di informazione aggiuntiva alla pagina che stiamo leggendo.
Prima di iniziare, due osservazioni importanti:
- quando un link è interno, viene spesso denominato Wikilink (abbreviazione di "Wikipedia link")
- solitamente, guardando una pagina qualunque, ci si accorge che vi sono alcuni link colorati in blu, e altri in rosso; i primi linkano articoli già scritti, i secondo sono segnaposto per futuri articoli che (speriamo) qualcuno scriverà con quel titolo
Quando mettere un wikilink
Il modo più semplice per valutare quando inserire un link, è guardare come è stato fatto nelle pagine già presenti. In generale, nell'indecisione la domanda che ci si deve fare è: "Se io stessi leggendo, seguire questo link potrebbe essermi utile?" Quindi qualunque voce che abbia "sufficiente importanza" per avere una pagina tutta per sè, ha diritto ad un wikilink.
Come scrivere un wikilink
Quando vuoi scrivere un wikilink, devi racchiudere nome della pagina da linkare in due parentesi quadre, così:
- [[Nome articolo]]
Ad esempio, un wikilink alla pagina Wikipedia:Portale Comunità è questo:
- [[Wikipedia:Portale Comunità]]
Ricorda: su Wikipedia, i wikilink sono creati automaticamente. Questo vuol dire che ogni volta che racchiudi un testo in due coppie di parentesi graffe, diventerà un wikilink. Per questo è necessario fare molta attenzione alle pagine già esistenti e, se è il caso, differenziare pagine a cui vorremmo dare lo stesso nome, che trattano però di cose diverse. Questo processo di differenziazione di nomi di pagine si chiama disambiguazione.
Se vuoi che il testo visualizzato non sia esattamente il nome della pagina, puoi aggiungere il nome alternativo aggiungendo il carattere "|" (SHIFT + BACKSLASH su alcune tastiere) e il nome che vuoi inserire.
Ad esempio, se vuoi che il wikilink precedente sia visualizzato con la scritta "il mio testo", puoi scrivere così:
- ..basta visitare il [[Wikipedia:Portale Comunità|il mio testo]]...
Apparirà così:
- ..basta visitare il il mio testo...
e conterrà il link al "Portale Comunità" .
Wikilink alle date
Creare un link ad una data potrebbe non sembrare utile; comunque ti raccomandiamo di farlo, perchè in questo modo ogni utente potrà visualizzare le date linkate nel formato che ha scelto attraverso le sue preferenze. Una data senza wikilink, ad esempio "13/07/2004", sarà sempre visualizzata in questo modo. Se invece la racchiudi in un wikilink così:
- [[13 luglio]] [[2004]]
Wikipedia lo visualizzaerà in una delle seguenti modalità:
- Luglio 13, 2004
- 13 Luglio 2004
- 2004 Luglio 13
- 2004-07-13
a seconda delle preferenze del singolo utente. (questo è valido solo per gli utenti registrati e che hanno fatto log in.)
Inoltre, per eventi importanti, puoi aggiungere l'evento alla pagina della data linkata, arricchendo così anche quella pagina.

Related sites
Wikipedia is for prose articles about subjects considered encyclopedic (along with some topics that would typically be found in an almanac).
Any article that simply defines a word, or short phrase, as you would find in a typical dictionary, and that can't be expanded into an encyclopedic entry, should be contributed to Wikipedia's sister project, Wiktionary.
Original source text, such as from a public ___domain book that you want to post to make it more accessible, should be contributed to one of Wikipedia's other sister projects, Wikisource.

Linking to the related sites
Say you have an uncommon word in an article that you write, that you think people might not understand. So you're tempted to try and link to it on Wikipedia, but there isn't enough to say about that word to make a real encyclopedia entry.
Link to its Wiktionary entry. (If Wiktionary doesn't have it yet, do everyone a favor and add it, even if it's just a brief definition. Other Wiktionarians will help flesh it out.)
Instead of the whole URL, you can use a wiki link similar to a regular Wikipedia link but with a special prefix. For example,
- [[wiktionary:house]]
will link to the Wiktionary definition of the word "house". In your article it will appear as:
you can hide the "wiktionary:" part by adding a "pipe" (vertical bar) character:
- [[wiktionary:house|]]
as explained on the previous page, so that the result is:

Cross-server links
You are viewing this article on the English version of Wikipedia, but there are Wikipedia editions with articles written in many other languages. To link from the English Wikipedia to the German article on Michael Jackson, type:
- [[:de:Michael Jackson]]
(Be sure to use the leading colon.)
It will appear as:
Similarly, to link from the German Wikipedia back to the article on Michael Jackson in English, type:
- [[:en:Michael Jackson]]
It will appear as:
Because of the large number of articles hosted on Wikipedia (currently 1 940 635 in total), each of the approximately 100 different Wikipedia languages has its own server.
The Meta site
There is one main site that serves as a common area to coordinate development of all these sites, Meta-Wikimedia. The Meta and Wikipedia sites can be linked to in a similar manner:
- One may link to the Meta by typing something such as:
- [[meta:Wikimedia News]]
- One may link back to the English 'pedia from Meta by typing something such as:
- [[wikipedia:Michael Jackson]]
To link to a separate project in a different language, one would type something like:
- [[w:de:Michael Jackson]]

External links
If you want to link to a site outside of Wikipedia, it should almost always go under the "External links" heading at the end of an article.
The easiest way to make a link is to simply type in the full URL for the page you want to link to. If you want to make a link to Google, all you need to do is type:
The wiki will automatically treat this text as a link (as has been done with the URL above) and will display the raw web address, including the "http://" part. In practice, you won't see this format much, as raw URLs are ugly and often give no clue what the site actually is.
To make the link display something other than the URL, use one square bracket at each end. If you want to make a link to Google, type:
- [http://www.google.com/]
This will display the link as a number in brackets, like this: [1]. This format is mostly used for citing sources within an article. It looks like a footnote, so it's best to only use it as such (for example, following a direct quote or a statement which requires a source). Avoid this usage: "According to [2], the last full moon of the second millennium occurred on December 11, 2000." Also avoid using an external link when it's possible to accomplish the same thing with an internal link to a Wikipedia article.
If you want the link to appear with text that you specify, add an alternative title after the address separated by a space (not a pipe). So if you want the link to appear as Google search engine, just type:
- [http://www.google.com/ Google search engine]
Note: Using certain characters, such as a pipe(|) in the URL of the link will cause the link to fail; however, HTTP provides the ability to specify any character in a URL as a hexadecimal equivalent to its ASCII representation, so you can, for instance, write %7C instead of the pipe character. See our table of ASCII printable characters for more hexadecimal codes.
When placed under the "External links" heading, the links should be listed in bullet-point format:
