'''Recent changes'''
* Wikis using the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Feature summary|Growth team tools]] can now show the name of a newcomer's mentor anywhere [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:Growth/Mentorship/Integrating_mentorship|through a magic word]]. This can be used for welcome messages or userboxes.
* A new version of the [[c:Special:MyLanguage/Commons:VideoCutTool|VideoCutTool]] is now available. It enables cropping, trimming, audio disabling, and rotating video content. It is being created as part of the developer outreach programs.
'''Problems'''
* There was a problem with the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Manual:Job queue|job queue]]. This meant some functions did not save changes and mass messages were delayed. This did not affect wiki edits. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T275437]

== Growth Newsletter delivery test ==
<div class="plainlinks mw-content-ltr" lang="en" dir="ltr">
[[File:Growth team logo - Icon only.svg|right|frameless]]
Welcome to the eighteenth newsletter from the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth|Growth team]]!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/New Editor Experiences/Midsize Wikipedias|mid-size]] Wikimedia projects.
=== Structured tasks ===
[[File:Screen_shot_of_"add_a_link"_in_beta_2021-05-02.png|thumb|A screenshot of "add a link" feature in development in beta.]]
"[[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks|Add a link]]" is now being tested in production and is nearing release on our four pilot wikis (Arabic, Czech, Vietnamese, and Bengali Wikipedias). We'll be doing final tests this week and next week, and then plan to deploy to the four wikis either during May 24 week, or May 31 week. After two weeks, we will analyze the initial data to identify any problems or trends. We expect that this feature will engage new kinds of newcomers in easy and successful edits. If things are going well after four weeks, we'll progressively deploy it to the wikis with Growth features.
=== News for mentors ===
[[File:Mockup of Mentor dashboard - desktop - Mentees overview module.png|thumb|Mockup of the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Mentor dashboard|Mentor dashboard]].]]
* We are currently working on a [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Mentor dashboard|Mentor dashboard]]. This special page aims to help mentors be more proactive and be more successful at their role. The first iteration will include a table that shows an overview of the mentors current mentees, a module with their own settings, and a module that will allow them to store their best replies to their mentees questions.
* We've conducted our quarterly audit on Growth's four pilot wikis to see the activity of mentors. It appears that [[phab:T280139|the vast majority of mentors are active]].
=== Community configuration ===
[[File:EditGrowthConfig on English Wikipedia beta – 2021-04-20.png|thumb|Community configuration editing form under development]]
We are working on project to allow communities to [[mw:Growth/Community configuration|manage the configuration of the Growth features on their own]]. In the past, communities have needed to work directly with the Growth team to set up and alter the features. We plan to put this capability in the hands of administrators, through an easy-to-use form, so that the features can be easily tailored to fit the needs of each community. While we developed it initially for Growth features, we think this approach could have uses in other features as well. We'll be trying this on our pilot wikis in the coming weeks, and then we'll bring it to all Growth wikis soon after. We hope you check out [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Community configuration|the project page]] and add any of your thoughts to [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk:Growth/Community configuration|the talk page]].
=== Scaling ===
* Growth features are now available [[mw:Template:Growth/Active wikis|on 35 wikis]]. Here is the list of the most recent ones: {{int:Project-localized-name-rowiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-dawiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-thwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-idwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-hrwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-sqwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-eowiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-hiwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-nowiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-jawiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-tewiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-eswiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-simplewiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-mswiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-tawiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-elwiki}}, {{int:Project-localized-name-cawiki}}.
* A new group of Wikipedias [[phab:T275069|has been defined]] for the deployment of Growth features. Please [[mw:Talk:Growth|contact us]] if you have questions about the deployment process, or if your community likes to get the features in advance.
* After discussion with the English Wikipedia community, [[:en:Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features#Potential%20plan%20for%20experimental%20deployment|the Growth features will be tested]] on a small percentage of new accounts. At the moment, registered users can test the features by [[:en:Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features#Try%20the%20tools|turning them on in their preferences]].

== Images in mass messages ==
Hi Trizek! Thanks for the newsletter. It was exciting to hear about all the coming features and I'm especially excited for the link recommendations. I just wanted to ask that next time, if you're going to include a lot of images, could you include <code><nowiki><div style="clear:both;"></div></nowiki></code> at the end? The images in this recent newsletter bled into my other messages and messed with the formatting, so adding that HTML at the end forces the parser to add the next section after the last photo rather than having them overlap. If there's some technical or policy reason not to, it's no big deal, but I thought it might be helpful feedback. Best! [[User:Wugapodes|Wugapodes]] ([[User talk:Wugapodes|talk]]) 02:52, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
:Hello [[User:Wugapodes|Wugapodes]], and thank you for your message.
:To be totally transparent with you, a while ago in a previous MassMessage, I inserted the options to clear floating images, and I had feedback from users who told me not to do this because it creates a big blank space. :)
:I'm not aware of any policies about it, I'm pretty sure we don't have any, but I'm sure that there is no consensual way to satisfy everyone about this! :D
:[[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 12:36, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
No worries then, it's not a big deal for me to manage my own talk page formatting. Thanks for giving it some thought. [[User:Wugapodes|Wugapodes]] ([[User talk:Wugapodes|talk]]) 17:45, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
== test "Add a link" on Hungarian WP ==
Hello
[[:hu:Wikipédia:Kocsmafal (műszaki)#[please test] "Add a link"]]
I just finished the Hungarian translation of your message. Most of it I created with '''DeepL''' software which is a machine translator and it gives quite good quality text into Hungarian.
I recommend using it for simple texts. Then '''you should insert the original inks'''! (if you translate the links, they will be broken).
You may try it yourself. DeepL has a capability to translate about 27 languages (if I remember well). So, not all wikis will have it. It has a limit of 5000 characters, but for a longer text you may select a shorter part, then do it further.
--[[User:Misibacsi|Misibacsi]] ([[User talk:Misibacsi|talk]]) 16:15, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
:Hello [[User:Misibacsi|Misibacsi]]
:Thank you for your message, and the translation you've made.
:I use DeepL a lot, but only for languages where I know about the quality of the translation. Now, I know it will work for Hungarian. Thank you for the tip!
:[[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 16:52, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Hello
Maybe before the DeepL machine translated text you can add: ''"Please check if the text grammatically correct and understandable"'', or similar. In my experience DeepL does a quite good work, maybe it is 90% correct or more. You may put the English version, too, then it is easier to check if the translation is good. --[[User:Misibacsi|Misibacsi]] ([[User talk:Misibacsi|talk]]) 20:24, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
== [[Help:CentralNotice]] ==
Hi Trizek,
On this page [https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:CentralNotice&diff=0&oldid=21592561 you added] the following:
**''For example if ''Projects'' is set to <code>wikipedia</code> and language is set to <code>es</code> only visitors to es.wikipedia.org will receive a banner.''
** ''For example if ''Projects'' is set to <code>meta</code> and <code>wikipedia</code>, and language is set to <code>es</code> , only visitors to es.wikipedia.org and visitors of meta.wikimedia.org ''displaying their pages in Spanish'' will receive a banner.''
I am not sure this is fully correct: as I have been taught, the language code refers to the code for the personal language settings. If the project ''Wikipedia'' and the language ''es'' is selected, the user who have their Mediawiki settings set to Spanish will see the banner on every Wikipedia they will visit. en-wp, de-wp, or ceb-wp all the same. Is you want to target only the es-wp, it is advised to use the es-wp SiteNotice, not the Meta Central Notice.
I am hoping to move forward in creating a Central Notice help for dummies, if you would like to help, please let me know! I think it would be wise to separate a settings-manual for people that work with the CN-banners (CN admins, stewards, WMF employees), and people that request the banners: it might otherwise cause an abundance of information to combine the two, but you are right that this kind of information is wanted! [[User:Ciell|Ciell]] ([[User talk:Ciell|talk]]) 08:56, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
:Hello [[User:Ciell|Ciell]], thank you for your message.
:I think my sentence is unclear. :) The key point is <code>meta</code> there, as selecting <code>meta</code> and <code>wikipedia</code>, and language is set to <code>es</code> would indeed only display the message ''at MEtawiki'' for users who set Spanish as their personal language setting for this wiki. My point is to document the fact that if you want to target ''everyone'' at Meta and ''everyone'' at Spanish Wikipedia, then you have to creat two separate campaigns instead of selecting <code>meta</code> and <code>wikipedia</code>, and <code>es</code> as a language.
:Do you see what I mean? If so, how can we document it better?
:[[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 13:47, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
::As I always understood (but maybe I've been wrong all this time) targeting <code>wikipedia</code>, <code>meta</code> and <code>es</code> (to stick with your example) means you will be targeting everyone who has
::a) set their language preferences to Spanish,
::b) visits any Wikipedia project
::c) or the Meta project.
::From this I can conclude that you indeed need two separate campaigns if your want to target all languages for Meta, and only Spanish users for the Wikipedia projects.
::But for your first example, to only target the ''Spanish Wikipedia'' (and for instance not seeing the same banner on the English Wikipedia when you did set you preferred language to Spanish) people will for instance need include country targeting, or as an alternative use the Spanish Wikipedia Site Notice. Have I been misunderstood all along? I am very eager to get this right, thanks so much for replying! [[User:Ciell|Ciell]] ([[User talk:Ciell|talk]]) 20:20, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
:::Hello [[User:Ciell|Ciell]], a quick message over a busy week: I'll reply in details next week. :) Stay tuned! [[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 15:54, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
::::Hi Trizek, thank you so much for helping. And the Google Doc FAQ for CN n00bs can for sure wait. But Wednesday Sept 1st the banners for WLM 2021 will be going live, and this year we've asked to put a diet in place for these banners - they never had and were always shown all the time for the full month. We thought we talked through the details quite thoroughly, but this setting could possibly be a big game changer in the diet that we (I and another CN admin) proposed should be used.
::::It would be great if you can take some time this week to at least help us out so we can set up the diet for [[CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Monuments 2021|the WLM campaign]] in a proper way - I am not requesting your help before Wednesday, but before the weekend would be very much appreciated: all the rest is for any spare time you have whenever. :::::Pinging again? [[User:Ciell|Ciell]] ([[User talk:Ciell|talk]]) 18:35, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
::::::Hello [[User:Ciell|Ciell]]
::::::I'm really sorry about the late reply. I have tons of work to do, and CentralNotice is not at the top of my list of duties. :/
::::::Regarding the combination of languages and projects, I got the information from Seddon, who worked with the Fundraising team. This team is the prime user of CentralNotice.
::::::If you need to target Spanish Wikipedia only, you are limited to people who visit es.wp AND have set their language as Spanish. This is how I understand it, and I think it works: I don't get local banners when I visit different wikis, since my language is set to English everywhere.
::::::I'm not how it would impact the discussion you have about WLM banners. I skimmed the conversation, and I didn't find anything that looks like a language-based blocker.
::::::Best, [[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 14:12, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

== Help with a localized template that shows English only ==
Hi @[[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] The template [[Template:DoNotTranslate]] is localized into Arabic, but when I visited [[Tech/Server switch/ar]] I saw that the template shows in English. I think usually the choice is made automatically based on page language. I have visited French, Magyar, and Suomi versions of the Server Switch page, which show the English version of the template as well. Would you be able to look into this matter or advise who might help with this issue? Thanks. <b>[[User:Haytham abulela|<font face="Arial Narrow" color="teal">Haytham Abulela</font>]] [[User_talk:Haytham_abulela|<font color="almond">talk</font>]]</b> 21:28, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
:Hello [[User_talk:Haytham_abulela|Haytham_abulela]]
:Usually, the template should be using {{template|TNT}}.
:Here is the problem: I need to keep this template on the page, because we are still working on the content of the message. If I edit the template to use the TNT template, I would have to mark the page for translation! Which would make the template useless. :)
:I think we will have to patiently wait for the end of my work to see the template working on other pages. Sorry. [[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 16:43, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi, would you mind substituting the message you wrote in Italian with the (probably original) message in English? That page (Wikipedia:Community portal (comunicaçioìn in ingléize) at https://lij.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Community_portal_(comunicaçioìn_in_ingléize) is reserved for messages in English. Thanks! [[User:Luensu1959|Luensu1959]] ([[User talk:Luensu1959|talk]]) 09:27, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
:Hello @[[User:Luensu1959|Luensu1959]], and thank you for the ping.
:I switched the message to English. I must say it is an very unusual request, as I'm more used to messages asking me to provide messages in the local language.
:For the future, I have a dilemma: if a message is translated in English, it should go to the page you linked, but if it is in Italian (or, even better, in Ligurian), if should go elsewhere, right? If so, we have a technical limitation: the distribution system can't find select a different page depending on the existence of translations. Actually, the distribution system selects the language configured for the wiki. If we select a different page for all messages, and I send to your wiki the message in English to a page welcoming messages in Ligurian or Italian, you'd probably ask me to move the message to a different place... Same problem, once again. 🤔
:The most important thing is that you read the message. Can I rely on you to share the information about the read-only time with your communities ?
:Thank you, [[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 14:40, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
::Hi Trizek, thanks for your clear explanation. Like you said, the most important thing is that we read the message! We administrators (five on the all) can read and speak English including a number of usual contributors. Sometimes, admins from the Italian Wiki translate the texts and place them in the community page in Ligurian [https://lij.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:P%C3%B2rtego_da_comunit%C3%A6 here] as Italian is used as a default language on our Wiki. With this system we did not detect any problem so far. All the best, [[User:Luensu1959|Luensu1959]] ([[User talk:Luensu1959|talk]]) 09:55, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
:::The message was translated in Italian, but apparently the distribution message system didn't detected Italian. I would not be able to copy the message in Italian next time, as I distribute it automatically to +1,000 pages.
:::A solution: if you have time, [https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Tech%2FServer+switch&language=lij&action=page&filter= you can translate the message I send]. It is a reusable message, used every time we have this server switch, designed to have minimal changes in time. You would then get the message translated in Ligurian every time! :) [[User:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Trizek (WMF)#top|talk]]) 18:36, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
== Wikimedia apps newsletter-April 2023 ==
<section begin="apps-newsletter-content"/>
Welcome to the first edition of the Apps newsletter!
This newsletter informs you about new features, updates, or improvements to the Wikipedia mobile apps. It will be sent every two months, with a brief description of the updates and work progress we have been through.
=== iOS ===
From January to April 2023:
Since January, we have finished our work on edit notices, custom block messages, and abuse filter messages. Those features were released in 7.2.0 on March 13. Check [[mw:Wikimedia_Apps/Team/iOS|here]] for detailed information.
=== Android ===
From January to April 2023:
Since January, we've been completing our experiment with machine-generated article descriptions, refined our feature of shareable reading lists, and begun work towards adopting IP masking functionality. Check [[mw:Wikimedia_Apps/Team/Android|here]] for detailed information.
=== Office hours ===
The first Apps office hour was held on the 23rd of March 2023; detailed information about the announcement, agenda, and even the record and presentation deck can be found [[mw:Wikimedia_Apps/Office_Hours|here]].
=== Community meetings ===
* We enjoyed meeting the [[m:Dagbani Wikimedians User Group|Dagbani user group]] for a one-hour meeting and answering all of their question about Wikipedia’s mobile applications and how to use them for reading, searching, and editing. The community users expressed that they care about having more offline usage capabilities, and a new section related to this topic will be added to the Apps FAQ soon.
* With pleasure, we had a meeting with the Commons volunteers to explore possibilities for collaboration between them and the apps team within the foundation. We reached an agreement to intervene in critical situations with the play store to ensure that the Commons app remains accessible online.
We are excited and willing to arrange meetings with other community members who are interested. You may also contact us at [mailto:aramadan@wikimedia.org aramadan@wikimedia.org] to arrange such gatherings. ;)
Exciting news: iOS is currently developing a watchlist feature. Stay tuned for our next newsletter release to learn additional details about it.
You can subscribe to this newsletter from [[m:Global message delivery/Targets/Wikimedia Apps updates|here]].

== Four Updates on the Private Incident Reporting Project ==
<section begin="massmessage-body" />
Hello everyone. Sorry to use English. {{int:please-translate}}.
For the past couple of months the Trust and Safety Tools team has been working on finalising [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Private Incident Reporting System#Phase_1|Phase 1]] of the Incident Reporting System project.
The purpose of this phase was to define possible product direction and scope of the project with your feedback. We now have a better understanding of what to do next.
# We are renaming the project as Incident Reporting System
# We have some feedback from researching some pilot communities to share with you
# We have updated the project’s overview
# We have the first iteration of the reporting extension '''ReportIncident'''
Please visit [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Private Incident Reporting System/Updates|the project's update page]] to get more details.

The [[foundation:|Wikimedia Foundation]] will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
All traffic will switch on '''{{#time:j xg|2023-09-20|en}}'''. The test will start at '''[https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/{{#time:U|2023-09-20T14:00|en}} {{#time:H:i e|2023-09-20T14:00}}]'''.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Manual:What is MediaWiki?|MediaWiki]], all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
'''You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.'''
*You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on {{#time:l j xg Y|2023-09-20|en}}.
*If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
''Other effects'':
*Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
* We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
* [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/GitLab|GitLab]] will be unavailable for about 90 minutes.
This project may be postponed if necessary. You can [[wikitech:Switch_Datacenter|read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org]]. Any changes will be announced in the schedule. There will be more notifications about this. A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens. '''Please share this information with your community.'''</div><section end="server-switch"/>

The Growth team will now send quarterly reports to keep you in the loop. Growth team weekly updates [[mw:Growth/Growth team updates|are available on wiki]] (in English) if you want to know more about our day-to-day work.
If you want to receive more general updates about technical activity happening across the Wikimedia movement (including Growth work), we encourage you to [[metawiki:Tech/News|subscribe to Tech News]].
=== Community Configuration ===
Growth features are currently configurable at <code>Special:EditGrowthConfig</code>. This quarter we are working on making [[mw:special:MyLanguage/Community configuration|Community Configuration]] accessible for other MediaWiki developers while also moving Growth feature configuration to the new CommunityConfiguration extension.
An early version of Community Configuration can be tested at [https://es.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Especial:CommunityConfiguration Spanish Beta Wikipedia]. We plan to release the new Community Configuration extension to pilot wikis (Arabic and Spanish Wikipedia) in early May, 2024. The first non-Growth team feature to utilize Community Configuration will be [[mw:special:MyLanguage/Moderator Tools/Automoderator|Automoderator]].
In parallel with the development, the Growth team will propose Community Configuration usage guidelines, Community Configuration design guidelines, and provide technical documentation.
=== Experiment Results ===
[[mw:special:MyLanguage/Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks/Add an image/Experiment analysis, March 2024|'''Add a Image experiment analysis results''']]
The Growth team conducted an experiment to assess the impact of the “[[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks/Add an image|Add an Image]]” structured task on the Newcomer Homepage's "Suggested Edits" module. This analysis finds that the Add an Image structured task leads to an increase in newcomer participation on the mobile web platform, particularly by making constructive (non-reverted) article edits:
* The likelihood that mobile web newcomers make their first article edit (+17.0% over baseline)
* The likelihood that they are retained as newcomers (+24.3% over baseline)
* The number of edits they make during their first two weeks on the wiki (+21.8% over baseline)
* A lower probability of the newcomers' edits will be reverted (-3.3% over baseline).
[[mw:special:MyLanguage/Growth/Positive reinforcement#Personalized praise experiment results|'''Personalized praise experiment results''']]
This feature was developed for Mentors as part of the Growth team's [[mw:special:MyLanguage/Growth/Positive reinforcement|Positive Reinforcement project]]. When A/B testing on Spanish Wikipedia, we found ''no significant impact'' on retention, but we found a ''significant positive impact'' on newcomer productivity. However, we concluded that the results weren’t positive enough to justify the time investment from Mentors. We plan to discuss this feature with our pilot wikis, and consider further improvements before scaling this feature further. Meanwhile, communities willing to test the feature can ask to have it deployed. ([[phab:T361763|T361763]])
[[mw:special:MyLanguage/Growth/Newcomer experience projects#Scaling the new donor Thank you page to English Wikipedia|'''English donors encouraged to try editing''']]
As in previous years, donors were directed to a Thank you page after donation ([https://thankyou.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thank%20You/en?country=US example]). However, this year we tested a new “Try editing Wikipedia,” call to action on the Thank You page. This call to action linked to a [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CreateAccount&geEnabled=1&campaign=typage-in-en-2023 unique account creation page]. From this account creation page we were able to track Registrations and Activation (editing for the first time). During the English banner campaign, the Donor Thank you page led to 4,398 new accounts, and 441 of those accounts went on to constructively edit within 24 hours. ([[phab:T352900|T352900]])
=== Future work ===
'''Annual Plan'''
The Growth team and the Editing team will work on the [[metawiki:Wikimedia_Foundation_Annual_Plan/2024-2025/Product_&_Technology_OKRs#Draft_Key_Results|WE1.2 Key Result]] in the coming fiscal year. We will start initial discussions with communities soon to help finalize our plans. ([[phab:T361657|T361657]])
[[mw:Growth/Community Updates|'''Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module''']]
We plan to A/B test adding a new Community Configurable module to the Newcomer Homepage that will allow communities to highlight specific events, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. We are early in the planning phase of this project that will take place first at our pilot wikis and wikis volunteering. We welcome community feedback on initial designs and plans, in any language at [[mw:Talk:Growth/Community Updates|our project talk page]].

== Edit check stats ==
Hello! During the discussion about enabling the edit check on plwiki, some users said that it would be interesting to see how this tool affected newcomers. I believe people would be interested in data and statistics like these: [[:mw:Edit_check#Experiments]]. I know that our case is a tad different, since there's no A/B testing and the tool is enabled for all users. But still, do you know if it would be possible to have some stats about the influence of the edit check generated for us in the future (like half a year or so)? Cheers, [[User:Tufor|tufor]] ([[User talk:Tufor|talk]]) 16:05, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
:Hello tufor
:Sorry for the delay responding. I'll ask which solutions we have.
:[[user:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek'''_'''(WMF)]] ([[user talk:Trizek (WMF)|talk]]) 13:47, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
::@[[User:Tufor|Tufor]], which kind of metrics your community would like to have access to? At the moment, we can provide the number of edits that were eligible to add a references, the ones that triggered the prompt and the number of citations added. You can explore these numbers at https://eccheck.toolforge.org/ [[user:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek'''_'''(WMF)]] ([[user talk:Trizek (WMF)|talk]]) 14:42, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
:::Hey, sorry for the delayed response. During the discussion, we had some vague comments about the stats; one person mentioned it would be interesting to see how the tool affected the number of references newcomers have added to articles. This data would be useful if we decide to evaluate the tool's impact in the future. However, I think we can make do with the site you’ve linked and the edit tags. I don't believe the stats are important enough to assign WMF programmers to focus on them; IMHO they should rather concentrate on other tasks to improve the tool, like [[:phab:T372363]]. Cheers, [[User:Tufor|tufor]] ([[User talk:Tufor|talk]]) 09:36, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
::::(Let's assume that delays between responses are a feature for now. :p)
::::Would [[mw:Edit_check/Tags|tags added to checks]], shown in in Recent Changes be enough? There is a tag for the case where the condition to trigger References Check is true and one for when a citation was added through the References Check process.
::::[[user:Trizek (WMF)|Trizek'''_'''(WMF)]] ([[user talk:Trizek (WMF)|talk]]) 13:44, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
:::::Without longer delay ;) The [[:pl:Wikipedia:Edit_check#Śledzenie_zmian|tags]] are already shown when the tool is activated and then when user declines to add reference. It would be good to have a tag that tells us when the reference was added, however currently <code>editcheck-newreference</code> is of no use in that regard (shows all references added by people using VE, not by those who were shown the prompt). One could assume that when the <code>editcheck-references-activated</code> tag is present but any of the <code>editcheck-reference-decline-...</code> tags are not, then a reference has been added. However it is not always the case. So, yes, having a tag that shows that a reference was added '''after seeing the prompt''' would be IMHO useful. One more stat that I consider important would be: how many users gave up on their edit after seeing the prompt. It would be nice to know, but like I said, it is not that important at the moment; the bug fixes are. Cheers, [[User:Tufor|tufor]] ([[User talk:Tufor|talk]]) 22:35, 23 September 2024 (UTC) PS. When you answer, please ping me; I am not that active on meta.
::::: Oh, okay, nevermind; searching for edits with both <code>editcheck-references-activated</code> and <code>editcheck-newreference</code> tags should give me a list of edits with references added with this tool. [[User:Tufor|tufor]] ([[User talk:Tufor|talk]]) 08:15, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

== Yo Trizek! ==
I am trying to make adding custom buttons to the Reply Tool easier.
I have [[:en:User:Polygnotus/Scripts/ReplyButtonsv4.js]] which loads its configuration from [[:en:User:Polygnotus/ReplyButtonsJSON]].
This allows me to:
*Easily add and remove buttons
*Use custom images instead of just [https://doc.wikimedia.org/oojs-ui/master/demos/?page=icons&theme=wikimediaui&direction=ltr&platform=desktop these]
I still have some questions:
*How do I add a button only to a specific namespace (e.g. the buttons for user warning templates should appear only on user talkpages and not on article talkpages)?
*When I click outside of the reply tool the non-custom buttons change to a darker color but the custom buttons do not.
*How do I remove existing buttons (and what would be the best way to indicate that a button should be removed in JSON)?
And probably more that I haven't thought of yet. It would be cool to have a Wiki-wide Javascript that allows people to customize the toolbar with a simple JSON file. And then have a script to generate the JSON of course! I am trying to recreate as much of the [[:mw:Extension:WikiEditor/Toolbar_customization|WikiEditor toolbar customization options]] as possible. ::Thanks and no worries. Found a fun little bug, I was writing a reply to [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#c-MatriceJacobine-20250227232800-Polygnotus-20250227232300 someone] in one tab but before I hit the Reply button I did something else in another tab. In the meantime, someone else [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AAdministrators%27_noticeboard%2FIncidents&diff=1278008859&oldid=1278008313 replied] and the section I was intending to reply in was [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents&diff=next&oldid=1278009196 closed] by another user. Now, when I go to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents enwp dramaboards] it autoscrolls to the ___location where my comment was going to be. When I am quick I can see the word {{tq|Loading…}} appear and disappear. I compare the HTML before and after it disappears and the only difference is that CSS class <code>ext-discussiontools-init-replylink-active</code> gets removed. Had to run <code>localStorage.clear();</code> to get it to stop. {{smiley}} [[User:Polygnotus|Polygnotus]] ([[User talk:Polygnotus|talk]]) 02:24, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
:See also [[phab:T265981|T265981]] where there will soon be a new hook you can use for detecting when a reply tool has been loaded (<code>ve.newTarget</code>).
:''"How do I add a button only to a specific namespace"''
:You sould be able to check the current namespace using <code>mw.config.get( 'wgNamespaceNumber' )</code>, and compare that to a specific namespace ID, e.g. <code>mw.config.get( 'wgNamespaceIds' ).user_talk</code>.
:''"When I click outside of the reply tool the non-custom buttons change to a darker color but the custom buttons do not."''
:The tools become disabled because they correspond to commands that only work on LinearSelections (not NullSelections which is what you have when the widget is de-focused/blurred). If you set <code>this.supportedSelections = 'linear';</code> inside your CommandClass constructor this should work (after the parent constructor call).
:It should really be passed in the options argument to the CommandClass constructor, but you aren't using <code>action</code> or <code>method</code> here either...
:(I would also pass <code>config.name</code> into the constructor, rather than hard coding it inside the constructor)
:''"How do I remove existing buttons"''
:The safest way would be to array-splice them out of the toolbar config. You could find them first using Array.findIndex.
:''"(and what would be the best way to indicate that a button should be removed in JSON)"''
:I guess list them by name in another key, although your current structure is just a flat array, so you may want to separate out the "add buttons" into a separate key.
:Note also that if you use [[User:Polygnotus/ReplyButtons.json]] then it will render and be served with the correct content type. [[User:ESanders (WMF)|ESanders (WMF)]] ([[User talk:ESanders (WMF)|talk]]) 14:38, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
::@[[User:ESanders (WMF)|ESanders (WMF)]] Thanks for your reply and answering my questions. I can probably improve the script, but that is not an efficient use of my time if I am the only user. As I wrote above: {{tq|It would be cool to have a Wiki-wide Javascript that allows people to customize the toolbar with a simple JSON file. And then have a script to generate the JSON of course! I am trying to recreate as much of the WikiEditor toolbar customization options as possible.}} I have a basic proof of concept but I am not a JavaScript coder. I think the WMF should develop this idea further and deploy it for all users. What do you think?

::It would also be useful if the Reply tool had an arrow to the left and an arrow to the right to indent and outdent the reply. Sometimes you want to reply but you don't want to use the indentation level of the post above +1. [[User:Polygnotus|Polygnotus]] ([[User talk:Polygnotus|talk]]) 05:04, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::I don't think a plain JSON format would provide enough configurability to make it worthwhile implementing upstream as an API. If you just want simple user-configurable wikitext inserts, then implementing it as a site gadget like you have is probably the best approach.
Cordialement,
Vincent. [[User:Don-vip|Don-vip]] ([[User talk:Don-vip|talk]]) 18:57, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
