Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Eyes of WakandaThe MCU just gave its $2.2 billion movie franchise its own Nick Fury. Played by Samuel L. Jackson, Nick Fury is the former director of SHIELD and current head of SABER, a master spy in the MCU. Now, Marvel's new Eyes of Wakanda series has just given Fury a run for his money with a director of Wakanda's very own.
Marvel's Eyes of Wakanda is an animated miniseries set across Wakanda's past, present, and future. Keeping its focus on the Hatut Zeraze, Eyes of Wakanda reveals the work of the War Dogs as they work to protect their nation and its many secrets. As such, the latest addition to Marvel's epic Black Panther franchise debuts Wakanda's very own version of Nick Fury.
Eyes of Wakanda Introduces Noni, Wakanda's Very Own Nick Fury
Eyes of Wakanda episode 1 is set in the year 1260 B.C. Starring an expelled member of the Dora Milaje named Noni, the Wakandan warrior is sent out to retrieve stolen weapons and eliminate the new MCU villain known as The Lion, a former War Dog and captain of the Wakandan Royal Guard who went rogue.
Stealing several vibranium weapons, The Lion believed Wakanda's isolationism to be "a golden cage" and sought to form his very own global empire, uniting the world under one banner by force. Once Noni defeats the Lion and returns home, it's revealed her mission was a secret test rather than simply being a means of becoming a Dora once more.
Determined to forge her own path, Noni is granted a position as a new member of the Hatut Zeraze, becoming a War Dog just like The Lion once was (and Erik Killmonger's father N'Jobu in 2018's Black Panther).
However, Eyes of Wakanda episode 2 takes place several decades later, detailing the MCU's Trojan War. After retrieving Helen of Troy's vibranium necklace, the War Dog agent known as B'kai returns to Wakanda, reporting to none other than Noni, who's confirmed to be the director of the Hatut Zeraze.
Given her new title and eye patch covering wounds received by The Lion, it's not hard to see the fun nod to SHIELD Director Nick Fury. Seeking to protect her nation's secrets and dispatching operatives out into the world to gather intelligence, one can imagine Noni's MCU journey shared quite a few similarities to Fury's, despite living centuries apart.
All in all, it's pretty fun to see history repeating itself with Directors Noni and Nick Fury, especially in a universe as vast as the MCU.
