Slang Dictionaries
I'd like to pick up the discussion on the 'slang dictionary entry' and write you one. I think I qualify as an expert: I write them myself, and have written much about them. I could also buff up the 'Eric Partidge' entry. However, as something of a Wikipedia novice (at least as a contributor), I'm slightly nervous of simply dumping a piece on top of the existing one. I'd be grateful for some etiquette advice.
Jonathon Green / author Cassell Dictionary of Slang / Chasing the Sun: Dictionary-Makers & the Dictionaries They Made, etc etc. 82.68.168.6 17:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
:Hi there, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! Are you the author of the dictionary that has apples and pears sitting on a staircase on the cover? Your ideas sound really exciting, because there are so many creative possibilities to pursue here. There is a lot of ground to cover when it comes to helping newcomers to Wikipedia, so please let me know if I am unclear on something.
:The collaborative processes here are quite fun to participate in, so the first thing I would recommend is that you create an account for yourself here. You can do that at by clicking here. We have a page that explains all the benefits of signing up too. Having an account is especially important if you plan to contribute over the long term. It helps establish your identity and reputation on Wikipedia. Over time, Wikipedians recognize you for your credibility, trust, and authority via the quality of your edits. For myself, being a part of the community and camaraderie that arises from editing is quite rewarding.
:Just in case, check out our introduction to Wikipedia page, and perhaps experiment with editing in our sandbox. For a brief synopsis of the philosphies on Wikipedia, check out our five pillars. You might also be interested in our sister project, Wiktionary located here.
:We don't have an article on Eric Partidge yet, so if you sign up, you'll be able to write the first version of that page. I assume the "slang dictionary entry" refers to slang dictionary? If you check the page history of the article, you can see that not too many people have edited it recently. In fact, it hasn't been touched for nearly a month, and there are less than 50 edits to the article! For an article with a history like this, I would recommend simply making edits as you see fit. Keep the perspective balanced, and add to the article incrementally. That way, another Wikipedian can easily understand your train of thought, and even anticipate the changes that you will make next if you leave descriptive edit summaries. Generally, Wikipedians strive for prose that has an informative, flowing, and above all - neutral tone. It is generally good etiquette to let others know what you are doing, by leaving notes on the respective talk pages of articles. Those talk pages are reserved for discussions on article content, and Wikipedians will generally propose new ideas, ask questions, or simply give feedback that what has been written so far looks good!
:I wouldn't worry too much about making the page look "perfect" - just add content. Typically, Wikipedians (like myself) will come by and fix formatting errors and the sort. When this happens, you can learn by observation. It does not take too long to learn all the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia. However, generally speaking, learning how to edit is much quicker and easier if you experiment and risk making "mistakes" - Wikipedia has an editing system that can fix these easily, and Wikipedians are generally very happy to help others out. On the odd occasion, you will run into editing disputes. If you do, I recommend taking a measured stance, keeping in mind the goals of writing this encyclopedia, and more importantly, your own personal enjoyment of participating here as a volunteer. For the more sticky disputes, administrators like myself can step in.
:It might be interesting for you to keep notes on "Wikipedian culture" as you come across it. I thought it might be fun if you checked out our archive of jokes at our beloved Wikipedia:Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense. There is a tremendous amount of jargon and slang on Wikipedia too, but I'll leave these for you to discover as you venture around the site :-)
:As always, if you need a hand, please feel free to come by my talk page. If you do make an account, do come by and say hello, so I can give you quick feedback as you make more edits on the encyclopedia. Enjoy your stay, and welcome aboard! --HappyCamper 20:45, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Resonators
Happy Camper good to see you back in action. Knowing that you like statistical mechanics, do you know what exactly Planck is talking about here when he uses the phrase “the entropy of N resonators”? That is, what are resonators? Also, in the black body article some one wrote that Planck had to assume that the energy of the oscillators in the cavity was quantized. Thus, what does “oscillators in the cavity” mean? Thanks if you can help: --Sadi Carnot 06:36, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
:HC, thanks for the input and the quotes; however, by McQuarrie and Simon, are you referring to their Molecular Thermodynamics (1999) book or their Physical Chemistry (1997) book? The quotes are good, I hadn’t read those. I’ll keep searching and get back to you if I find anything. The way Planck states that a black body is made up of “N resonators” so liberally without explanation, I am guessing that the “resonator” theory or idea was a common one in those days, most likely thought up by someone much earlier. What I really want to know is who that someone is? Talk soon. --Sadi Carnot 23:09, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

I've reverted your early closure. A controversial issue is not resolved by closing it early. Also, the debate is leaning strongly in the direction of deletion, so closing it as a keep is inappropriate. ==:Category:IAQMS members==
Before we go ahead and populate this, I suggest you think about the title. I think the cat people will try to rename it to :Category:Members of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science. Abbreviations have been removed in the past and "Members of X" rather than "X members" seems to be the standard, if I recall right. I know. Its a pain. I'm still hoping to remove a few of the redlinks in the IAQMS artcile by writing bios. --Bduke 22:42, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm copying your reply to me back here, so we can keep it in one place. --Bduke 02:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
It's true, they might rename it, but I figure it's a Wiki, and I didn't think following conventions strictly would be such a good idea for such an unwieldy name. Do you think making that category is a good idea? I just thought it would be a good idea to remove the "listiness" from that page. I'll hold off on adding more to that category for now. I just wanted to do some experiments with it for now.
I'm worried about the article itself though. It seems like a cut and paste of the original site, and I think it would be best to rewrite it completely. --HappyCamper 02:13, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree the length of the name suggests an abbreviation but I recall "WAGGGS" in a cat being changed to "World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts" even though the Scouting Project objected. Lets go with the abbreviation. If they change it, they can get a bot to change the articles. I disagree about removing the list for now. It is an extremesly usefull list to suggest new articles. Let us write those articles. Then we can delete the list, mention the cat for a list of members and just add the newly elected members each year until articles on them have been written. There is an element of cut and paste off the original site, I agree. I'll have a go at it. Maybe you can join in. --Bduke 02:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
:Alright. We'll keep the stuff here :-) Well, I don't plan to snip off the list entirely. Perhaps put the names in a table which spans a few columns. Have you seen my International Congress of Quantum Chemistry article? Who knows, maybe we will meet in 2009! --HappyCamper 02:27, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
::No, I had not. I recently did something similar - Sanibel Symposium. I was not sure what cat to add to that, but added the "International conferences" one. I've added it to your article. Why not move the list of meetings from the IAQMS article. I have just rewritten it. What do you think? I think it removes the copyvio problem but the material is all from their site. It would be nice to have some outside links which is why I added the IJQC. A Google search pulls up lots of stuff saying "X has been elected to the prestigious IAQMS", which I reckon supports notability but we can not add all of them. I agree about putting the members in a table with say 3 columns. Maybe we will meet in 2009! I was at the very first Congress and the 2nd, then one more somewhere and then the Bonn meeting much more recently. --Bduke 03:33, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
:::I think the rewrite looks great! I think I'll edit it some more when I find more information. I've moved the list of meetings to the ICQC page. I was thinking of tracking down the original conference proceedings and adding some topics that they covered to the article. True, we probably can't add all of the IAQMS members to Wikipedia - I doubt we will be able to find much information on these people to write a comprehensive encyclopedia article. Perhaps checking out that "Who's Who" reference would be a good start. We might even consider the recipients of the IAQMS medal too. --HappyCamper 04:04, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
::::Good job on moving the Congress stuff over. Not all of the meeting had proceedings I think. I do not see why we can not have articles on all members. I think I have added about 20. They are all notable and I think material can be found - more in some cases than others of course. It will just take time. What do you mean by 'that "Who's Who" reference'? --Bduke 04:18, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
:::::Okay, you're right. It will just take some time. Ah, the Who's Who reference I was thinking of was the Marquis Who's Who - , it slipped out of my mind in my last post. --HappyCamper 04:24, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Help with "moving" article
Dear HappyCamper, someone attempted to rename the Apogee Foundation article with the proper name of the organization, which is "The Apogee Foundation." However, this person seems to have mistakenly created a duplicate article instead of "moving" it as recommended by Wikipedia. To remedy this, I attempted to delete the old "Apogee Foundation" article so there would not be a duplicate -- but, due to my limited Wiki skills, I instead ended up blanking the text of the old article. Is it possible to redo this failed "move" process so that the old article "Apogee Foundation" is actually properly moved to the new, correct title of "The Apogee Foundation" (with the text which is now present for the new article)? We'd greatly appreciate your help with this, and thanks for all of your great services to Wikipedia! <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.253.102.26 (talk) 04:38, 19 January 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->

::Okay, I'm back. Take a look at The Apogee Foundation and let me know if the result is what you would like to see. == Tucans ban ==
I think its unfair, how I Tucans, was blocked because of pacdudes outrageous behavior towards jameee23, you guys are hiding the true side of pacdude. I never vandalized pacdudes wiki page, as I told you before my friend logged into my account and vandalized it framing me. Also i think its outrageous how pacdude has vandalized sites himself but he gets special treatment, so he will not get banned. Unlike me however who did not vandalize the site! As my friend did, but I still got banned for it. While pacdude did it himself gets away with it without getting even a warning. Please treat everyone equally especially when you get elected to be a moderator. Please unban me.
