In effetti il termine ''theologia crucis'' venne usato molto raramente da Lutero. Per la prima volta utilizza il termine, ed esplicitamente lo definisce in contrasto con la teologia della gloria, nella [[Disputa]] tenuta a [[Heidelberg]] nel [[1518]]. Durante questo dibattito rappresentava il pensiero degli [[Agostiniani]] e presentava le sue tesi che in seguito avrebbero dato il via al movimento della [[Riforma luterana]].
