Nel giugno 2007 [[Zak Penn]], sceneggiatore de ''L'incredibile Hulk'', venne assunto per scrivere la storia di ''The Avengers''. Ad aprile 2010 [[Joss Whedon]] firmò per dirigere il film e riscrisse la sceneggiatura di Penn. La Marvel annunciò che Edward Norton non avrebbe ripreso il ruolo di Bruce Banner, e nel luglio 2010 venne assunto al suo posto [[Mark Ruffalo]]. Black scrisse la sceneggiatura insieme a [[Drew Pearce]]; parte della storia del film è ispirata alla saga a fumetti ''[[Extremis]]'' di Iron Man. Nel film Tony Stark combatte contro un [[disturbo post traumatico da stress]] in seguito alla battaglia di New York in ''The Avengers''. Black ha spiegato che "è un ansia causata dal sentirsi inferiore ai Vendicatori, ma anche dall'essere avvilito dalla visione di una realtà che non riesce più a capire e con cui non riesce a riconciliarsi... nel film c'è una battuta riguardo al fatto che da quando il tipo con il martello è piovuto dal cielo le cose sono cambiate. È questo ciò con cui abbiamo a che fare". Mark Ruffalo riprende il ruolo del dr. Bruce Banner nella scena post-titoli di coda.
