Il teatro venne fondato come ''Opernhaus am Brühl'' il 18 maggio [[1693]] con la prima assoluta di ''Alceste'' di [[Nicolaus Adam Strungk]], terzo teatro d'opera a sorgere in Europa dopo il [[Teatro San Cassiano]] di Venezia e l'[[Opera di Amburgo]] in [[Germania]]. L'Opera di Lipsia non ha una sua orchestra, e la [[Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra]] viene impiegata nella stagione operistica del teatro. Questa collaborazione data dal 1766, con l'esecuzione dello [[Singspiel]] ''Der Teufel ist los oder Die verwandelten Weiber'' di [[Johann Adam Hiller]].
I primi tentativi di creare un universo cinematografico ci furono nel 1998 con ''[[Film su Superman|Superman Lives]]''.
