Costruito nel [[XIII secolo]]<ref>Per il Nigra risale al [[XV secolo]] Cfr. {{cita|Carlo Nigra|pp. 105-106}}</ref>, il castello giudiziario in origine appartenne ai canonici di Aosta, ma non è certo se fosse sotto il controllo dei canonici di [[Collegiata di Sant'Orso|sant'Orso]] o dei canonici della [[Cattedrale di Aosta|cattedrale]].<ref>Quel che sappiamo è che Derby, insieme a La Thuile, Pré-Saint-Didier, Morgex e La Salle, fece parte della [[castellania]] della [[Valdigne]] e che fu [[Umberto I di Savoia|Umberto I]] a infeudarvi i canonici di san Giovanni e di sant'Orso nel 1040. Il castello si presenta con una struttura massiccia a pianta quadrata, di tre piani; è dotato dei resti di una cinta muraria (o un recinto) con torretta angolare a sezione circolare che presenta alcune feritoie: secondo [[Carlo Nigra]], in origine le torrette sospese erano probabilmente due.

L'accesso, non rialzato se non di qualche scalino, è protetto da una [[caditoia]].
