== Missing period after work parameter ==

This demonstrates a missing period after the ''work'' parameter:
* {{cite web| title = Statue of Liberty| work=World Heritage| publisher=© UNESCO World Heritage Centre 1992–2011| url = http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/307| accessdate =2011-10-23}}

(''publisher'' is wrapped in parens and dup'd, too, but this may be a temporary thing)
<font color="red">—&#91;</font>[[User:AlanM1|<span style="font-variant:small-caps;"><font color="green">Alan</font><font color="blue">M</font><font color="purple">1</font></span>]]([[User talk:AlanM1|talk]])<font color="red">&#93;—</font> 19:37, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
* '''Parentheses are for journal format:''' The {cite_web/lua} adds parentheses around "(publisher)" when it thinks the cite is for a journal (as variable "Periodical"), so that has caused the confusion. -[[User:Wikid77|Wikid77]] ([[User talk:Wikid77|talk]]) 21:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

== Anchors ==

{{tl|Citation}} creates an anchor by default, where {{cs1}} template create them only when {{para|ref}} is set. {{tl|Citation/lua}} does not create the anchor by default. None of the Lua templates create the {{para|ref|harv}} anchor properly: the year is missing. --'''''—&nbsp;[[User:Gadget850|<span style="color:gray">Gadget850&nbsp;(Ed)</span>]]'''''[[User talk:Gadget850|&nbsp;''talk'']] 20:00, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

== No printonly URL ==

First difference I've spotted is {{t1|Cite web}} has a <nowiki><span class="printonly"></nowiki> tag for urls but this is not included in {{t1|Cite web/lua}}. (Copied from [[Template talk:Citation/core]])

:Is that really needed? When I try a print preview in both Firefox & IE, the current cite web version shows the URL twice. With the lua version, it only shows the URL once. Does it need to be shown twice for the printed version? -- [[User:WOSlinker|WOSlinker]] ([[User talk:WOSlinker|talk]]) 20:19, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

::It seems that it might not be, there is a css rule for the a.external.text class which inserts the url and the printonly span duplicates this behaviour [http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/phase3/skins/common/commonPrint.css?view=markup commonPrint.css].
<source lang="css">
@media print
#content a.external.text:after,
#content a.external.autonumber:after {
/* Expand URLs for printing */
content: " (" attr(href) ") ";
}
</source>
Looks like this is a bug in {{t1|Citation/core}}. However it does require the user agent can work with the :after css tag. --[[User:Salix alba|Salix]] ([[User talk:Salix alba|talk]]): 22:33, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

== Separators ==

The biggest visible difference between {{tl|citation}} and the CS1 templates is that citation uses a comma as a separator by default, while the CS1 ones use a period; this can be changed by the {{para|separator}} parameter. However, {{tl|citation/lua}} always uses a period, and ignores the separator parameter. This should be fixed to match the existing templates. Another closely related problem is that {{tl|citation/lua}} currently adds a spurious period after the issue number of a journal paper; e.g.
:<nowiki>{{citation/lua
| last1 = Benjamin | first1 = Arthur T. | author1-link = Arthur T. Benjamin | last2 = Orrison | first2 = M. E.
| title = Two quick combinatorial proofs of <math>\scriptstyle \sum k^3 = {n+1\choose 2}^2</math>
| journal = [[College Mathematics Journal]]
| year = 2002
| volume = 33
| issue = 5
| pages = 406–408
| url = http://www.math.hmc.edu/~orrison/research/papers/two_quick.pdf}}.</nowiki>
:{{citation/lua

| url = http://www.math.hmc.edu/~orrison/research/papers/two_quick.pdf}}
renders as "''[[College Mathematics Journal]]'' '''33''' (5).: 406–408". It should not have the period between the "(5)" and the following colon, and the periods after the publication year and the article title should both be commas. —[[User:David Eppstein|David Eppstein]] ([[User talk:David Eppstein|talk]]) 21:13, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
* '''Reworking to handle separator:''' It will take a few days to fix all dots, but I will change each dot "." to allow comma when {citation} or separator=c as Lua variable "sepc". When I try {{tl|citation/lua}} instead, as
:{{citation/lua

I see two severe problems: the {{para|contribution}} (the title of the paper) is entirely missing, and the semicolon separating the editor name is missing. As more minor issues, although you have fixed many of the dots already (thanks!) there is still one between the page numbers and ISBN, and the commas after the publisher and between the ISBN and MR are missing. By the way, the {{tl|cite conference}} version of this citation,
:{{cite conference

has long had a problem where the period after the editor initial is doubled. There doesn't seem to currently be a {{tl|cite conference/lua}} template, but when that one gets done I hope that it can fix this old bug. —[[User:David Eppstein|David Eppstein]] ([[User talk:David Eppstein|talk]]) 00:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
* '''Lua can quickly avoid double-dots:''' I plan to fix the double ".." problems. The Lua language has a quick substring function as {{j|"string.sub(name,-1,-1)"}} to extract the final character from a string, check against dot "." and skip adding another dot. This will also be available to fix the original cite templates. -[[User_talk:Wikid77|Wikid77]] 00:48, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

== et al. ==

CS1 templates do not italicize et al., as it is a commonly used term. There is an extra period after et al.

== Handling vast set of parameters ==
I see the migration to the Lua-based templates will affect a vast array of cite parameters, but I think we have over 100 parameters already close to the same format. If we keep going for another week, I think we can fix most issues, such as ref ids and Harvard referencing. However, many of the minor cite template forks, such as [[Template:Cite press release]] or [[Template:Cite_video]], can remain in the markup version until we get time to handle all the format variations. Articles can have a mix of the Lua-based cites and original markup-based cites and still render. -[[User_talk:Wikid77|Wikid77]] 05:20, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

== series/volume/publisher order ==

It's very quickly becoming difficult to find any difference in formatting between this and the old templates — thanks for all the hard work! But here's one more.
{{tl|citation}}, for a book that has a {{para|series}}, a {{para|volume}} in the series, and a publisher, orders them series, volume, publisher:
*{{citation
| last1 = Aharoni | first1 = Y.
| last2 = Halperin | first2 = D.
| last3 = Hanniel | first3 = I.
| last4 = Har-Peled | first4 = S.
| last5 = Linhart | first5 = C.
| contribution = On-line zone construction in arrangements of lines in the plane
| doi = 10.1007/3-540-48318-7_13
| pages = 139–153
| publisher = Springer-Verlag
| series = Lecture Notes in Computer Science
| title = Proc. 3rd Int. Worksh. Algorithm Engineering (WAE '99)
| volume = 1668
| year = 1999}}.
But {{tl|citation/lua}} orders them series, publisher volume:
*{{citation/lua
| last1 = Aharoni | first1 = Y.
| last2 = Halperin | first2 = D.
| last3 = Hanniel | first3 = I.
| last4 = Har-Peled | first4 = S.
| last5 = Linhart | first5 = C.
| contribution = On-line zone construction in arrangements of lines in the plane
| doi = 10.1007/3-540-48318-7_13
| pages = 139–153
| publisher = Springer-Verlag
| series = Lecture Notes in Computer Science
| title = Proc. 3rd Int. Worksh. Algorithm Engineering (WAE '99)
| volume = 1668
| year = 1999}}.
Incidentally, I would be happy to see the boldfacing on the volume and the comma in front of it both go away, in this case, but maybe we should concentrate on matching what we already have before thinking about improvements. —[[User:David Eppstein|David Eppstein]] ([[User talk:David Eppstein|talk]]) 06:04, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
* '''Reset order, checking volume prefix:''' For years, the plan for the volume has been to automatically unbold, such as for prefix "Vol" or "vol" and then put a comma. To force unbold, then insert tag "&lt;/b>" prefix, as "volume = &lt;/b>1668". The time to improve for prior suggestions is now, while people are still checking to see if it works. -[[User_talk:Wikid77|Wikid77]]
**I think http://xkcd.com/1144/ adequately expresses my opinion about using mismatched tags. —[[User:David Eppstein|David Eppstein]] ([[User talk:David Eppstein|talk]]) 08:27, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

== Position of "___location" versus "agency" fields ==

From [[Help talk:Citation Style 1#Position of "___location" versus "agency" fields]]:

As of this writing, the [[Template:Cite news|Cite news template]] has the <code>___location</code> field follow the <code>agency</code> field, rather than the <code>newspaper</code>/<code>work</code> field (see the "No author but sourced to a news agency" example in the documentation), which is confusing, since per the documentation the ___location field refers to the ___location of the newspaper ("[g]eographical place of publication"), not that of the news agency.

This has been discussed twice before ([[Template_talk:Cite_news/Archive_5#Agency.2C_newspaper.2C_and_location|Archive 5: Agency, newspaper, and ___location]] and [[Template_talk:Cite_news/Archive_5#"Location" of newspaper vs. "Location" of byline|Archive 5: "Location" of newspaper vs. "Location" of byline]]), but no conclusion/consensus was reached. Would someone please be so kind as to fix this?—[[User:DocWatson42|DocWatson42]] ([[User talk:DocWatson42|talk]]) 09:09, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

:I agree, this has needed fixing for a long time. The present situation is obviously illogical and wrong. (One of a number of such things often mentioned but never fixed.) -- [[User:Alarics|Alarics]] ([[User talk:Alarics|talk]]) 13:19, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

:::See [[Singapore]], footnote 62, which says "''AsiaOne''. Agence France-Presse (Singapore)." when it obviously should be "''AsiaOne'' (Singapore). Agence France-Presse." -- [[User:Alarics|Alarics]] ([[User talk:Alarics|talk]]) 17:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
:::: Another: The '''No author but sourced to a news agency''' example I referenced above, taken from the template's documentation:
::::* As it is: {{cite news

|url=http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=48660
|work=Daily Express
|___location=Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
|date=29 March 2007
|agency=Bernama
}}
::::* As it should be: "[http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=48660 Drugs: Chips trader gets 15 years, 10 strokes]". ''Daily Express'' (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia). Bernama. 29 March 2007.
:::::—[[User:DocWatson42|DocWatson42]] ([[User talk:DocWatson42|talk]]) 14:47, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
* '''Comparison with Lua version:''' The placement of the "___location=" parameter could be shifted for only citation class "news" where other cites could have some alternate format:
::* '''Cite_news:''' {{cite news
|title=Drugs: Chips trader gets 15 years, 10 strokes
|url=http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=48660
|work=Daily Express |___location=Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
|date=29 March 2007 |agency=Bernama }}
::* '''Cite_news/lua:''' {{cite news/lua
|title=Drugs: Chips trader gets 15 years, 10 strokes
|url=http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=48660
|work=Daily Express |___location=Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
|date=29 March 2007 |agency=Bernama }}
: If there is confusion with a shift in parameters, then we could alter the format for the cite class "news" only. -[[User_talk:Wikid77|Wikid77]] 15:12, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
