The '''Energy Technology Data Exchange''' (ETDE) was formed in 1987. It was initiated as, and continues to be, a multilateral agreement under the IEA agreement network, replacing numerous other [[bilateral agreement]]s. The [[multilateral agreement]] is for the international exchange of [[energy research]] and development and information. The exchange has resulted in a [[database]] which is the world's largest collection of energy research, technology, and development (RTD) information (ETDEWEB - described below). The collection of information is generated from energy RTD literature published in member countries and through other partnering arrangements with organizations such as the [[International Nuclear Information System]] (a unit of the [[International Atomic Energy Agency]]). This has the effect of creating a broad spectrum of information that is included in the ETDE database. The range of content includes [[fossil fuel]]s, [[renewable energies]] (including [[Hydrogen]]), End-Use ([[Building]]s, [[Industry]] and [[Transport]]), [[fusion power|fusion]], energy policy, conservation, and efficiency, and cross-sectional activities. Furthermore, this fulfills the need for timely exchange of global information towards the goal of a sustainable energy future.

This database containscontained more than 4.5 million abstracted and indexed records, and iswas updated twice per month. Temporal coverage iswas from 1974 to present day2014. The principle access point for this database iswas [[ETDEWEB]] (see next section). However, access iswas also available through commercial online hosts, and some countries offeroffered their own products for access. Member country representatives supplysupplied the best options for their citizens to access this database. Furthermore, the United States feedsfed this database to [[Dialog (online database)|Dialog]] which providesprovided online access. Likewise, Germany feedsfed this database to [[STN International]].<ref name=energyDB/>

ETDEWEB iswas produced and made available by ETDE. It hashad over 4,552,0005 million references for literature that encompassesencompassed broad topical coverage, and allowsallowed access to more than 500 000 full text fordocuments 431,000and reports, which amountsamounted to more than 1 million pages. ETDEWEB hashad unique access to these reports, which arewere often not available through other conventional sources. Over a million other references linklinked to sites containing cited documents. Open access iswas provided to member countries, countries with developing country status, or by Executive Committee decision.<ref name=etdewebpg>

After the previous ETDE consortium ended in 2014, the WWE application allowed ETDEWEB and other content to remain accessible, thanks to remaining funds and former member country support. But this extended access also ended in July 2016.<ref name=WWE>
