It is located in the [[Ruhr area]] between [[Duisburg]] and [[Essen, Germany|Essen]], bordering to the south of the City of [[Oberhausen]] and 30 km to the north-east of [[Düsseldorf]].

* [[Hugo Stinnes]], an industrialist and founder of the [[German People's Party]] (''Deutsche Volkspartei'', or DVP) was born here in [[1870]].

* [[Fritz Thyssen]], an industrialist associated with the [[National Socialist German Workers Party|Nazi Party]] of [[Adolf Hitler]] was born here in [[1873]]. He fled the party following the events of [[Kristallnacht]] and was eventually captured. He was imprisoned in the [[concentration camp]] at [[Sachsenhausen concentration camp|Sachsenhausen]] until the end of the war. Following that, he fled to [[Buenos Aires]], [[Argentina]], where he died in [[1951]].
