The '''regional [[Accent (linguistics)|accents]] of [[English language|English]] speakers''' show great variation across the areas where English is spoken as a first language. This article provides an overview of the many identifiable variations in [[English pronunciation|pronunciation]], usually deriving from the [[Phonology|phoneme]] inventory of the local [[dialect]], of the local variety of [[Standard English]] between various [[population]]s of native English speakers.

== '''Welcome to Wikipedia!''' ==
Local accents are part of local [[dialect]]s. Any dialect of English has unique features in [[pronunciation]], [[vocabulary]], and [[grammar]]. The term "accent" describes only the first of these, namely, pronunciation. See also: [[List of dialects of the English language]].

Among native English speakers, many different accents exist. Some regional accents are easily identified by certain characteristics. It should be noted that further variations are to be found within the regions identified below; for example, towns located less than 10 miles from the city of [[Manchester]] such as [[Bolton]], [[Salford]] and [[Oldham]], each have distinct accents, all of which form the Lancashire accent, yet in extreme cases different enough to be noticed even by a non-local listener. There is also much room for misunderstanding between people from different regions, as the way one word is pronounced in one accent (for example, ''petal'' in American English) will sound like a different word in another accent (for example, ''pearl'' in Scottish English).

The main accent groupings within England are between the north and south; the dividing line runs roughly from [[Shrewsbury]] to south of [[Birmingham]] and then to [[The Wash]]. The prestige accent in England is [[Received Pronunciation]], which originates from the educated speech of southeastern England. The London-derived [[Estuary English]] is growing in importance as a widespread standard form in the south.

'''Thank you''' for reverting vandalism to the article November 25. Your help is greatly appreciated. I notice that after you reverted the vandalism, you didn't warn the user involved. Could I ask that in the future you consider warning users who vandalize article? Its easy to do and has two significant benefits. First it tells the vandal that we are keeping an eye on them - many users stop vandalizing as soon as they receive a warning. Second it lets other editors know about previous episodes of vandalism and makes it much easier to leave appropriate warnings and know when to impose blocks, if required.

Warning is really easy. Just leave a {{[[Template:test|test]]}} tag on the user's talk page. In the first case of vandalism you leave a {{[[Template:test1|test1]]}}, the second time {{[[Template:test2|test2]]}} and so on up to {{[[Template:test4|test4]]}}. If the user already has a recent {{[[Template:test4|test4]]}} notice you can report them to the [[WP:AIV|vandalism noticeboard]]. Some characteristics of the Northern Irish accent include:

Okay, thanks for letting me know...I was just in the process of investigating. [[User:Bearcat|Bearcat]] 09:58, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
* As in Scotland, the vowels {{IPA|/ʊ/}} and {{IPA|/u/}} are merged, so that ''look'' and ''Luke'' are homophonous. The vowel is a [[high central rounded vowel]], {{IPA|[ʉ]}}.
* The diphthong {{IPA|/aʊ/}} is pronounced approximately {{IPA|[əʉ]}}, but wide variation exists, especially between [[social class]]es in [[Belfast]]
* The vowel {{IPA|/eɪ/}} is a monophthong in open syllables (e.g. ''day'' {{IPA|[dɛː]}}) but a rising diphthong in closed syllables (e.g. ''daze'' {{IPA|[deəz]}}). But the monophthong remains when inflectional endings are added, thus ''daze'' contrasts with ''days'' {{IPA|[dɛːz]}}.
* The [[Alveolar consonant|alveolar stops]] {{IPA|/t, d/}} become [[dental]] before {{IPA|[r, ɚ]}}, e.g. '''''t'''ree'' and ''spi'''d'''er''
* {{IPA|/t/}} often undergoes [[flapping]] to {{IPA|[ɾ]}} before an [[lexical stress|unstressed]] syllable, e.g. ''eighty'' {{IPA|[ɛːɾi]}}

Canadian accents vary widely across the country, and the accent of a particular region is often closer to neighbouring parts of the United States. Nevertheless, there are some characteristics that exist across the country, in varying degrees, such as [[Canadian raising]]. Canadian actors and announcers used to aim for a [[General American]] accent (similar to that formerly used by actors and announcers in the [[United States]]), to make their pronunciation more acceptable to U.S. listeners. An example of this is the speech of actor [[Christopher Plummer]]. There are five main Canadian accents.

Thanks for letting me know. [[User:Mangojuice|Mangojuice]] beat me to it, and I think his explanation was sufficient. --[[User:Idont Havaname|Idont Havaname]] ([[User talk:Idont Havaname|Talk]]) 21:05, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
* Starting from the east, first is the Newfoundland accent (dialect is more accurate, as there are many words which are only defined in [[Newfoundland]]). It is very hard to describe (in fact, in 2005 when a Newfoundland-born Canadian general was put in charge of the military occupation forces in Kabul, Afghanistan, his staff presented his American colleagues with a dictionary of Newfoundland English), but there are elements from nearly every European country that inhabited the Americas in the 15th to 17th centuries (Irish being the strongest influence). It is also spoken very quickly, sometimes to the point where it is impossible for non-Newfoundlanders to understand. It is primarily spoken on the island of Newfoundland. The [[Cape Breton accent]], spoken on [[Cape Breton Island]], is similar.
:I've been keeping track of [[template:unblock|<nowiki>{{unblock}}</nowiki>]] requests. This user got my attention before [[User:Mangojuice|Mangojuice]] got there, and I decided to make sure you know about this. [[User:Od Mishehu|Od Mishehu]] 21:10, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
* The second is the Eastern Canadian accent. It is similar to Newfoundland, but not as thick nor nearly as fast. This is frequently confused on American television as ''the'' Canadian accent, quite incorrectly.
* The third Canadian accent is the "Quebec" accent. It has a more throaty sound than the Eastern or Central accents.
* The fourth (and by far the most common) accent in Canada is the central/western accent. Broadly similar to the generic northern U.S. accent, it is spoken by about 60% of the population of Canada.
* The fifth accent is the official [[Ottawa Valley Twang]], an accent in Canada's national capital Ottawa. An estimated 1.3 million people live in the Ottawa Valley. In the capital city [[Ottawa]], the accent is spoken to a lesser degree and is influenced by the central/western accent. But suburban and rural areas are strong in the Ottawa Valley Twang, and even speak with slight r-trilling accents. An example is "gidday" (good day, hello), and "cairp" (town or fish).

== [[Cetartiodactyla]] ==
Within this group there are myriad smaller regional accents, many sounding anywhere from "American" (though one must hesitate to classify them this way, as there are many differences between the American and Canadian accents) to slightly British (in a few locales in Southern Ontario, as well as Vancouver). Most Canadians, especially those speaking with a Central/Western accent deny they have an accent at all.
Dear Od Mishehu, I find your global incorporation of this "taxon" a little bizarre! I read the relevant article, and the whole thing seems to be within the realms of "possibility only", and not even subscribed to by all leading evolutionists... A particular hobby-horse of yours, I wonder? Anyway, if you agree that the main article itself is substantively correct, then I suggest the introgression of this "superorder" into every conceivabale animal taxobox that "fits" is a little over the top. I suggest we leave the "accepted taxonomy" as is and leave the conjecture to higher-order taxonomic articles...what do you think? Thanks--[[User:Grmanners|GRM]] 21:21, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

There is great variation among accents of English spoken in the United States; accents are perhaps more variable in the U.S. than in any other English-speaking country besides the [[United Kingdom]]. In terms of phonology, [[flapping]] may be the only process common to all accents of American English: not all American English accents are [[rhotic and non-rhotic accents|rhotic]], not all use the "[[broad A|flat A]]" in words like ''half'' and ''can't'', not all have lost the [[phonemic differentiation]] between the vowels of ''father'' and ''bother'' or the vowels of ''cot'' and ''caught'' or the consonants of ''wine'' and ''whine'', and so forth. [[General American]] is the name given to the accent used by most TV network announcers; it is most similar to the local accents of [[Iowa]] and adjacent parts of [[Nebraska]], and [[Illinois]]. General American makes a good reference accent, and a good goal for foreigners learning American English, because it is generally regarded as a "neutral" accent (when most Americans say someone "doesn't have an accent" they mean he or she has a General American accent).

== Why add superorder Cetartiodactyla to all taxoboxes about whales!? ==
The Australian accent varies between social classes and is sometimes claimed to vary from state to state, though this is disputed (it is more the lexis that varies between states, as well as the pronunciation of certain words, the most cited example being 'castle'). Accents tend to be strongest in the more remote areas. (Note that, while there are many similarities between Australian accents and New Zealand ones, there are also differences.)

I can see that you have been massively adding superorder Cetartiodactyla to all taxoboxes in articles about whales. This is undesirable because of two reasons:
===[[New Zealand]]===
* It is preferred to only add main taxa to the taxoboxes and not intermediate ones like superorders, superfamilies, ''unless'' it clarifies the classification of the particular taxon described in the article. Otherwise it is unnecessary information that makes the taxobox less readable.
''Main article: [[New Zealand English]]''
* Although the evidence for and acceptance of 'Cetartiodactyla' is growing, it is still controversial enough to leave it out of authoritative lists like taxoboxes for now.
I hope you agree with this point, and either turn back the changes yourself or allow me or others to do it...
Kind regards, --[[User:Fedor|Fedor]] 09:51, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

FYI: From [[Wikipedia:Taxobox usage#Classification]]:
The New Zealand accent is distinguished from the Australian one by the presence of short or "clipped" vowels, also encountered in [[South African English]]. New Zealanders, according to Australians, pronounce "fish and chips" as "fush and chups", "yes" as "yiss" and "sixty six" as "suxty sux". To American ears, the New Zealand soft "s" sounds slushy, more like "sh", so that "consumer" sounds like "con-SHOO-mer". This is attributable to the influence of [[Scottish English]] speech patterns.

Taxoboxes should include all major ranks above the taxon described in the article, plus minor ranks
Geographical variations appear slight, and mainly confined to individual special local words. One group of speakers, however, hold a recognised place as "talking differently": the South of the South Island (Murihiku) harbours a "Celtic fringe" of people speaking with a "Southland burr" in which a back-trilled 'r' appears prominently. The area formed a traditional repository of immigration from Scotland.
that are important to understanding the classification of the taxon described in the article, or
which are discussed in the article. Other minor ranks should be omitted.

--[[User:Fedor|Fedor]] 09:59, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
The trilled 'r' is also used by some Māori, who may also pronounce 't' and 'k' sounds almost as 'd' and 'g'. This is also encountered in South African English, especially among Afrikaans speakers.

:You have rashly inserted this superorder in a massive amount of taxoboxes. As this clearly is deviating from common usage of taxoboxes, I would prefer that you revert these changes yourself. This is a lot of work and your responsibility, and as you are using some advanced wiki-editor yourself, it should be much easier for you to do than any of us. We're only allowed to accept unblock requests, which I have no intention of doing because the account is clearly a sock puppet of a blocked editor. -- [[User:Vary|Vary]] | [[User talk:Vary|Talk]] 15:14, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

:Yes, but for an other admin to have the proper grounds for a reaction, a simple '''Sock of [[User:Piratesofsml]], evading block''' isn't enough. If you give your evidence, then an other admin can decide based on it. [[User:Od Mishehu|Od Mishehu]] 18:33, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

== PLEASE RESPOND and revert your own mistakes ==
A number of distinct dialects of English are spoken on the Indian subcontinent. Accents originating in this part of the world tend to display two distinctive features:
* [[timing (linguistics)|syllable-timing]], in which a roughly equal time is allocated to each syllable. Akin to the English of Singapore and Malaysia. (Elsewhere, English speech timing is based predominantly on stress);
* "sing-song" pitch (somewhat reminiscent of those of [[Welsh English]]).

Well I can see that apparently you do read your talk page. I want to insist '''strongly''' that you yourself revert the superfluous and rash insertion of 'Cetartiodactyla' to all taxoboxes concerning cetaceans or artiodactyls. It would seem that you used some special software for this and the number of articles this has been done for now is so huge that it is much harder for us mere mortals to revert all the damage you have done than it would be for you. '''Please''' step up and clean up your own mess!! [[User:Fedor|Fedor]] 13:20, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
===[[Malaysia]] and [[Singapore]]===
English is the [[lingua franca]] of Singapore, a former British colony. It also is the most frequently used language in the homes of about 23% of Singaporeans (see http://www.singstat.gov.sg/papers/c2000/adr-literacy.pdf).

== Abortion by region ==
The Singaporean and Malaysian accents are fairly similiar and the distinctions between the two are analagous to that between the American and Canadian accents. The Singaporean/Malaysian accent is so distinctive that it is one of the ways Singaporeans and Malaysians recognize one another when they are overseas.

I'd like the category http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Abortion_by_region to be deleted per discussion at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Abortion#Hierarchy Can you delete it? Thanks.[[User:Ferrylodge|Ferrylodge]] 01:21, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
The Singaporean/Malaysian accent appears to be a melding of British, Chinese, and Malay influences.

== Article needing to be Wikified ==
Many Singaporeans and Malaysians adopt different accents and usages depending on the situation, for example an office worker may speak with less coloquialism and with a more British accent at the job than with friends or while out shopping.

I have created the Wikipedia article "Academy Hill School", a school where I serve as lead teacher. My intent is to have a group of students work on the article over the next few weeks, adding headings, details, sections, etc. I am hoping that it will not be deleted before my students can do this. How long will I have before it is deemed natable enough to continue to be included? [[User:Carolrosenthal|Carolrosenthal]] 00:22, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Carolrosenthal

:It looks safe for now. I wouldn't worry unless a deletion tag is put at the top. I don't think it can be [[WP:CSD|speedied]], and if it gets [[WP:PROD|prodded]] you have time left to deal with it - wait till near the end of the 5 days before removing it to maximize your time.

== Uncat template aesthetics ==
*[[timing (linguistics)|syllable-timing]], where speech is timed according to syllable, akin to the English of the Indian Subcontinent. (Elsewhere, speech is usually timed to stress.)
* A quick, staccato style, with "puncturing" syllables and well-defined, drawn out tones.
* No [[r-colored vowel|rhotic vowels]], like British English. Hence "caught" and "court" rhyme, both being pronounced {{IPA|/kɔːt/}}, "can't" rhymes with "aren't", etc.
* Much dropping off of final consonants: "must" becomes "mus'", "cold" becomes "co'", etc.
* The "ay" and "ow" sounds in "raid" and "road" ({{IPA|/eɪ/}} and {{IPA|/oʊ/}} respectively) are pronounced as [[monophthong]]s, i.e. with no "glide": {{IPA|/red/}} and {{IPA|/rod/}}.
* {{IPA|/θ/}} is pronounced as /t/ and {{IPA|/ð/}} as /d/; hence, "thin" is {{IPA|/tɪn/}} and "then" is {{IPA|/dɛn/}}.
* Depending on how colloquial the situation is: many [[discourse particle]]s, or words inserted at the end of sentences that indicate the role of the sentence in discourse and the mood it conveys, like "lah", "leh", "mah", "hor", etc.

There was a fairly clear consensus from discussion at [[CAT:NOCAT]] to add them at the bottom, and I don't see how it's feasible for a bot to make stylistic decisions about the best place to place it. Hopefully someone inconvenienced thereby will either fix the categorisation, or move the template by hand. If you feel the template is too large, you might want to bring that up on its talk page. == Uncategorised articles ==

excuse me, but i dont understand your comment on my userpage?

I was under the impression that 'stub' put it into the category of articles that were new and lacking, and thus needed inprovement?

if that was wrong then that was wrong, and i'd like to know so i dont do it again -- as far as 'not good enough' and 'i should put it in the correct category' is concerned tho, the whole point of a wiki is that one person doesn't have to do everything. as well as categorisation, it also needs, imo, an illustrative picture and more words. i couldn't be arsed to provide these, so i just started it off and left it for others to finish, bit by bit, wiki style. --[[User:Dak|Dak]] 23:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

:Stub articles, in order to be improved, should be classified with similar stubs - for example, an expert on [[Mammals]] can find [[:Category:Mammal stubs|stubs about mammals]] as a seperate place from [[:Category:Insect stubs|stubs about bugs]] - a subject this user may know less about. In addition, [[:Category:Stubs]] and {{tl|stub}} don't make it easier for a user trying to find information on [[weapons]] - while placing a <nowiki>[[Category:Weapons]]</nowiki> on the page does.
