Gwen Stefani (born October 3, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and occasional actress. Stefani made her debut in 1992 as the frontwoman of the pop–rock band No Doubt. The release of the group's second album Tragic Kingdom (1995) propelled them to stardom and it sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide. It spawned the singles "Just a Girl", "Spiderwebs", and the airplay number-one "Don't Speak". The band's popularity went into decline with Return of Saturn (2000), but Rock Steady (2001) introduced reggae production into their music, which was generally well-received.

Historical background
Stefani recorded her first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. in 2004. The album contains pop and dance records and influence from hip hop and R&B. Its third single "Hollaback Girl" became the first U.S. digital download to exceed sales of one million and "Cool" was one of 2005's most popular radio singles.
The first four Beatles vinyl albums differ based on their ___location of release. Those released in the U.S. were of lower sound quality and had some of their songs omitted. Additionally, even though the first four Beatles albums were originally released as both monaural and stereo recordings in the United Kingdom, stereo record players were quite rare in the UK at the time. Naturally, then, George Martin and the Beatles spent more time on the mono mixes. Many early songs were later remastered by Capitol Records for the U.S. as artificial stereo with bass on one side and treble on the other side, with lots of added echo. However, this was only done when the stereo mix of the song was not available or did not exist, as in the case of She Loves You. The Capitol release of Rubber Soul, however, has gained a lot of fans in the years since the release of the British albums on CD. The additions of "I've Just Seen a Face" and "It's Only Love" from "Help!" and the omission of "Drive My Car," "Nowhere Man," "What Goes On," and "If I Needed Someone" gives the album a different, folky flavour.

When it came time to release the Beatles' catalogue on CD, the decision was made to use the original British versions of the albums, since those were the "the way the Beatles originally intended them to be". The initial releases of the first four CDs were of the original mono mixes. In 2004, Capitol Records released the first four American albums on CD as a box set and they represent the current (as of 2006) official stereo versions<!--2004-11-16-->. No official stereo mix of the first four British albums had been released on compact disc, but there were plenty of "official looking" bootleg CDs in circulation that include the U.S. stereo mixes and even bear the "Apple" logo. Martin and the Beatles started to spend more time on stereo mixes by 1965. However, many fans believe that the mono versions of Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the White Album are superior to the stereo mixes.
The Sweet Escape, Stefani's second solo album, will be released on December 5 2006 in North America and on December 4 elsewhere. The album's first single is "Wind It Up".

The sound of the digital transfers of the current discs, produced by George Martin in 1987 and 1988 using the best equipment available during the early days of the format, no longer meet standards achievable using current techniques in Direct Stream Digital, HDCD, and others. The sound on the remastered catalogues of Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones, among other heavyweights from the 1960s, have been greatly enhanced utilising technological developments that have occurred since Martin's initial digital mastering, and as of 2007, similar work for the Beatles is long overdue.
Early life
Gwen Stefani was born in Fullerton, California, but grew up in Anaheim. Her father, Dennis Stefani, is Italian American, and her mother Patti Flynn is of Irish and Scottish descent. She has a sister, Jill, and two brothers, Eric and Todd. Jill appeared in No Doubt's "Just a Girl" music video. Gwen attended California State University, Fullerton, and Loara High School (class of 1987), where she was on the swim team and marching band. Gwen's best friend growing up was current band member Becky DelliCarpini. The two are still inseparable. Her first job was scrubbing floors at a Dairy Queen, and she once worked at the makeup counter of a department store. Her brother Eric was the keyboardist for No Doubt, but eventually left the band to pursue a career in animation on The Simpsons. Other members of the group include Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, and drummer Adrian Young. Stefani had a 7 year relationship with the band's bassist Tony Kanal. The relationship was kept a secret from the band for a while. Unfortunately, Stefani already had the image of marriage in mind, which scared Tony, and eventually they broke it off. Through this difficult time, Stefani went through a period of depression and began to write her own songs. Thus, the birth of their third album Tragic Kingdom. Most of the CD is written about Tony through her time of heartbreak, eventually resulting in one of their most successful CDs. Stefani's breakthrough came in 1995.

However, many Beatles enthusiasts feel that the current EMI CD releases of the albums do not do them justice for different reasons. Since the music was mastered to be played on vinyl, the cutting and playback of which is widely believed to add 'warmth' to the recording, the current CDs are not able to compensate for the different medium. Given how important the sound quality of these albums was not only to the Beatles and George Martin, but also from a historical point of view, many purists still listen to Beatles albums only on vinyl.
Career
1986–Present: No Doubt
No Doubt

The band's third album Tragic Kingdom, which followed their eponymous debut No Doubt (1992) and The Beacon Street Collection (1995), took three years to make. During this time, the band almost split up due to the break up of Kanal and Stefani. However, this was to become a major inspiration for Stefani lyrically. The album, released in 1995, was certified diamond in the US for shipping over 10 million copies and sold 15 million copies worldwide. Following the success of Tragic Kingdom, Stefani became highly popular and recognizable. The tension this produced with the other members of the band was touched upon in their video for the song "Don't Speak". Stefani met Bush and now Institute frontman Gavin Rossdale in 1995 at a concert in which she was performing to promote Tragic Kingdom. The release of The Singles 1992-2003, a CD with the band's best hits, and Everything in Time: B-sides, Remixes and Rarities prompted media speculation about a break-up, which the band denied in later interviews.

It was reported in January and February of 2007 that the entire UK catalogue had been remastered, and would be re-released in the first half of the year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on June 1, 2007. The aforementioned album will also be released in a box set with both stereo and mono mixes, as well as possibly a 5.1 surround mix. These releases may also be offered on iTunes, marking the first time the Beatles' music will be available online.
Outside of No Doubt Stefani has collaborated with other artists, most notably for the singles "South Side" and "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" with Moby and Eve respectively. In 2002, Eve and Stefani won a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind."

In early 2005 it peaked at number five in the U.S. and number three in Canada and topped the albums chart in Australia. It had major success in Mexico, where it became the highest-selling English album for more than a month and peaked at number two for several weeks.

Continued sales of the album as an import led to this release.)

:Note: The reason for the Past Masters compilations are so that every song The Beatles released in 1962-1970 could be on a CD. They include singles and B-sides, two songs sung in German, the contents of an EP released in 1964 that had four additional songs, the "single" versions of the songs "Get Back" and "Let It Be", and a version of "Across the Universe" that had bird-like sound effects. Past Masters was also issued as a 2-LP set on 1988-11-10.

The Beatles also recorded annual Christmas records for their fan club members. From 1963 to 1969 these were released as 7" flexidiscs on LYN. In 1970 the 7 previous records were put onto a 12" vinyl record. These remain largely unavailable today, with the exception of one track, "Christmas Time Is Here Again", which was edited and released on the Free As a Bird CD single in 1994:

In Canada
"Rich Girl" was released as the album's second single; a duet with rapper Eve, and produced by Dr. Dre, it is an adaptation of a 1990s pop song by British musicians Louchie Lou and Michie, which itself is a cover of "If I Were a Rich Man", from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. "Rich Girl" proved successful on several formats, and reached the UK and U.S. top ten. Love. Angel. Music. Baby.s third single "Hollaback Girl" became Stefani's first U.S. and second Australian number-one single; it was less successful elsewhere. The song was the first U.S. digital download to sell more than one million copies legally, and its brass-driven composition remained popular throughout 2005. Its lyrical content features the word "shit" thirty-eight times.
The division of Capitol Records in Canada released three uniquely Canadian albums and 9 singles in 1963 and 1964 before aligning with the American division and releasing the same albums as in the U.S. Unlike the U.S., Capitol of Canada said yes to the Beatles from day one, as many British artists had obtained hit records in Canada previously, unlike in the U.S. The first Canadian release was "Love Me Do" (72076) on 1963-02-04.

This is a listing of the official studio albums released in Canada by the Beatles (not including compilations and the like).

{|
The fourth single "Cool" was released shortly following the success of its predecessor, but failed to match its chart success, reaching the U.S. and the UK top twenty. However, "Cool" was Stefani's first Canadian number-one single. The song's music video, filmed in Lake Como, Italy, depicts Stefani's former relationship with No Doubt bass guitarist Tony Kanal. The song's music video shows Stefani paying homage to her Italian heritage as well as the 1950s bombshells. "Luxurious" was released as the album's fifth single, but did not perform as well as its predecessors. "Crash" was released as the album's sixth single in early 2006 in lieu of the production of Love. Angel. Music. Baby. sequel, which Stefani postponed because of her pregnancy.

After this album, Capitol of Canada synchronised its catalogue production with the US market, beginning with United Artists' A Hard Day's Night and concluding with Apple's Hey Jude. Notably, though the albums "Something New" and "The Beatles' Story" were only produced in mono when originally released. American albums such as Meet the Beatles!, The Beatles' Second Album and The Early Beatles did not see release in Canada until 1967. The 1967 issuing of the American back catalogue was of the following LP's:
* The Beatles' Second Album, ST 2080 (Stereo)/ T 2080 (Mono), February 1, 1967
* Meet The Beatles, ST 2047 (Stereo), February 1, 1967

* The Early Beatles, ST 2309 (Stereo), August 1, 1968

Compilation in Canada
The song "Serious", a fan-favorite of Love. Angel. Music. Baby., was also considered to be released as a single. A video was shot in 2005 before Stefani's pregnancy, but "Crash" was used instead. This video has been confirmed to be released as a bonus feature on the upcoming DVD release of Gwen's 2005 Harajuku Lovers Tour. A clip of the video has been recently leaked on the internet.
All post-Beatles albums were released exactly the same in Canada as in the U.S., with the one exception of The Beatles' Ballads LP, which was given the catalogue number SL 9612.

In the U.S.
Stefani received five Grammy Award nominations on December 8, 2005. She was nominated in five categories: "Album of the Year", "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance", "Best Pop Vocal Album", "Record of the Year" and "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration".
In the United States, as noted above, the Beatles albums were rearranged, retitled and remixed. Some of the U.S. releases were nearly identical to their UK counterparts, often only varying by one or two songs. Most releases contained songs that were also found on other records, which made things difficult for the American Beatles fan trying to purchase the band's entire catalogue. By 1967, all U.S. releases matched the UK releases exactly. Some of the U.S. releases included:

Harajuku Girls
*In The Beginning (Circa 1960), Polydor Records 24-4504 (1970-05-04) #117
The release of Stefani's first solo album brought attention to her entourage of four Harajuku Girls. Named Love, Angel, Music, and Baby by Stefani, the Harajuku girls are named for the area around the Harajuku Station of Tokyo, Japan, known as a popular shopping destination and fashion centre for teenagers. Following the style of their namesake area, Stefani's Harajuku girls are usually flamboyantly dressed (sometimes in a somewhat "Gothic Lolita" style). They have been featured in her music videos and press coverage and on the album cover for Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and have a song dedicated to them on the album. However, Stefani's adoption of this component of Japanese culture drew criticism from Mihi Ahn at Salon.com, and others who feel that Stefani has stripped Japanese street fashion of its authenticity and created yet another example of the 'submissive Asian female' stereotype. Wrote Ahn,

{{cquote|Stefani has taken the idea of Japanese street fashion and turned these women into modern-day geisha, contractually obligated to speak only Japanese in public, even though it's rumored they're just plain old Americans and their English is just fine... she's swallowed a subversive youth culture in Japan and barfed up another image of submissive giggling Asian women.<ref>MiHi Ahn. ==Extended plays (EPs)==
2006-Present: The Sweet Escape
During the years that the Beatles were together and recording, album tracks were not customarily released as singles, and vice versa. Instead, EMI would release album tracks as EPs, long singles with two songs per side. With two exceptions, the EPs feature songs also available on Beatles albums, rather than original material.
Stefani's second solo album The Sweet Escape is scheduled for release on December 4 outside North America and December 5 in Canada, Mexico and the United States. She is again seen working with Pharrell and Tony Kanal, and Akon is featured on one of the tracks. The album will include fifteen songs.

Singles
Along with the announcement of her upcoming album and DVD release in late 2006, Stefani announced on her website recently that she will be embarking on an international tour starting in April 2007. This tour will visit North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Tour dates have not yet been confirmed.

Stefani has created a successful fashion line, named L.A.M.B., which showcases clothing that Stefani is often seen wearing herself. The line also includes handbags and purses. Celebrities such as Nicky Hilton, Pamela Anderson, and Carmen Electra have been seen sporting her fashion line and LeSportsac bags. No Doubt bassist (and former boyfriend) Tony Kanal donated an X-Ray of his broken finger as an image for L.A.M.B T-shirts. In fall of 2006, Gwen Stefani will release a limited edtion line of dolls dubbed "Gwen Stefani Fashion Dolls." Stefani will release a Limited Edition series of eight dolls entitled Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Inspired by her multi-platinum album and tour, each doll will reflect Gwen's eclectic onstage incarnations. Ranging from her Hollaback Girl to the fashion-forward Harajuku Girls of Tokyo, the dolls in this high-end line will reflect the distinctive style and personality which have made Gwen Stefani an icon. She also designed and promoted a Harajuku girl-themed camera for Hewlett-Packard.

Stefani made her acting debut playing Jean Harlow in the 2004 Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator and made a quick cameo appearance in the movie Zoolander. *Stefani is the only person to win in the Best Male Video and Best Female Video categories at the MTV Video Music Awards, and in the same year. In 2001, Moby won Best Male video for "South Side", which Stefani was featured in, and Eve won Best Female video for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind", which also featured Stefani.

*The red vinyl dress that Stefani wore on the cover of No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom was stolen from the Fullerton Museum Center in Orange County, United States.

References
*As a friend and former crush to Bradley Nowell, of the ska/punk band Sublime, Stefani staged a benefit concert in Southern California following his death. She also sang opposite Nowell in the 1994 Sublime song "Saw Red" and the 1995 song "Total Hate 95".
