Van Leeuwen studied [[linguistics]] at the [[University of Sydney]], and taught [[communication theory]] at Macquarie University and the London College of Printing. Van Leeuwen obtained a BA in scriptwriting and direction from the [[Netherlands Film Academy]] in [[Amsterdam]] in 1972.
