This template is used to produce a phonetic or phonemic representation (using the [[International Phonetic Alphabet|IPA]] system) of Japanese words or sounds, using natural spelling to avoid the need to search for the correct phonetic symbols. Various romanizations are accepted ('ti' or 'chi', 'ō' or 'oo', etc.), but kana is only partially supported. Long vowels are accepted with a consonant, but diphthongs require a second cell. For the coda nasal, a value 'n', 'm', 'ng', 'N', or '~' needs to be specified, depending on the following consonant or vowel. Similarly, for geminate consonants, a value 'p', 't', 's', 'sh', 'k' needs to be specified. Enter an apostrophe in its own cell for [[downstep]] (change in pitch). Use a hyphen for a space.
