Some of these blocks are dedicated to, or primarily contain, mathematical characters while others are a mix of mathematical and non-mathematical characters. Computer systems allow the input of specific unicode characters in different ways, on [[Unicode input#In_Microsoft_Windows|Windows]] unicode characters can be typed utilizing <kbd>Alt</kbd> + Numpad combinations where <kbd>Alt</kbd> has to remain pressed untill the unicode number is entered. [[Unicode input#In_MacOS|MacOS]] may use the <kbd>Option</kbd> key followed by four diget number instead. [[Unicode input#In_X11_(Linux_and_other_Unix_variants_including_ChromeOS)|Linux and other Unix variants]] may use the key combination <kbd>Strg</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd> to remain pressed for typing unicode characters.

The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D400&ndash;U+1D7FF) contains Latin and Greek letters and decimal digits that enable mathematicians to denote different notions with different letter styles. The reserved code points (the "holes") in the alphabetic ranges up to U+1D551 duplicate characters in the [[#Letterlike Symbols block|Letterlike Symbols block]].
