In February 2004, it was reported that Emmerich had struck a deal to adapt [[Peter Landesman]]'s ''[[The New York Times Magazine|New York Times Magazine]]'' story "The Girls Next Door" into a feature film that he would direct and produce. He was developing the story into a film alongside Landesman, and Rosilyn Heller who was to also produce.
