AAn NSA plane crashes near athe town calledof Ruby after its cargo, an abnormally large reticulated python, escapes confinement. The cargopython survives the crash and attacks Ruby's citizens, starting with a lesbian couple, Lisa and Roberta, camping in the woods.
At a swimming hole the next day, John, his girlfriend Kristin, his best friend Tommy, and Tommy's girlfriend Theresa find Lisa'sa pet [[Burmese python]], "Ladythey G"recognize as belonging to Lisa. Deputy Greg arrives, mentioning that Lisa is missing, and takes the snake. When Lisa's body is later found, appearingheavily to have been corrodeddisfigured by acids.acid, Gregthe suspectspolice suspect John, sincewho heis worksemployed at a plating plant that usesutilizes acidsacid.
Meanwhile, NSA Special Agent Parker meets with scientist Anton Rudolph while preparing to recapture the python; Anton (who was part of the team that created the creature) explains its origins as a genetically-engineered hybrid of several snake species as well as its defensive capabilities - including being able to expel highly-corrosive stomach acid - and concluding that Parker's men don't stand a chance.
Scientist Anton Rudolph meets with [[NSA]] Special Agent Parker. The cargo is an abnormally large, {{convert|129|ft|m|abbr=on}} [[reticulated python]] genetically engineered in [[Southeast Asia]], blending several species. In the words of Dr. Rudolph, it is, "''a perfect killing machine. A 129-foot all-terrain vehicle, capable of speeds exceeding 50 miles an hour, with skin that can deflect an antitank round, enhanced night vision, and a voracious appetite for human flesh''". The NSA team plans an assault against the Python.
The Pythonpython kills more people, including a real estate agent and the agent'shis client,. leavingJohn behinddiscovers the clientscene and Roberta'spolice bodies.find Johnthe arrivesbodies asof both the Pythonclient leaves,and furtheringRoberta suspicionin againstthe him.garage, Thecausing the sheriff shutsto shut down his brother Brian'sthe plant. When the body of the real estate agent is found with the same acid damageburns, the sheriff also orders John arrested.
The NSA team andarrive with Anton arriveas a guide, tellingproviding the sheriff with a cover story about the murders being committed by a psychotic rogue operative. committing theThe murders. Hesheriff does not believe them, but freesis John.forced Kristin,to Tommy,free TheresaJohn, andwho hehad planbeen planning to goleave on a tripvacation with Kristin, Tommy, and Theresa the nextfollowing morning.

The Pythonpython kills the entire NSA team, theincluding soleParker, survivor beingwith Anton whoas keepsthe himselfsole standing motionless in front of the creature.survivor
The next morning, the python attacks Theresa and kills Tommy at their home; Theresa drives away, but the python follows and disables her truck, forcing her to hide in a nearby crevice. John and Kristin go looking for Tommy and Theresa after they fail to arrive and find the wrecked truck; Theresa tries to warn them about the snake, which chases John and Kristin to the water treatment center, where they find both Theresa and a shocked Anton. Realizing that they must do something about the python before it gets to town, John calls Greg on the radio and fills him in on a plan they have devised to trap and destroy the python.
Theresa's morning shower is interrupted by the Python. It kills Tommy, but Theresa escapes and drives away, with the Python following behind. The following morning, it disables ther truck. Theresa hides in a crevice.
They lure the python into the water treatment center by having it chase John through a shaft, while they set a bomb near the entrance and John escapes through a hatch too small for the snake; however, the bomb does not detonate when triggered. Anton runs back in to reset it, sacrificing himself by detonating manually when confronted by the python. Though the others celebrate their apparent success, the python emerges unscathed. While fleeing in Greg's police car, the group construct an alternative plan to penetrate the python's hide by luring the python into a vat of acid at the plating plant. They are able to push the python's underbelly into one of the vats, causing the python to be killed by the acid.
WJohn and Kristin find the wrecked truck. Theresa tries warning them as the Python approaches, but they cannot hear her. John and Kristin escape using Tommy and Theresa's bikes from the truck. They make it to the water treatment center, where Theresa joins them, and find Anton in shock. The group realizes that they must do something about the Python or it will get to the town. They call Greg on the radio and fill him in on a plan they have devised.
Six months later , Greg has been accepted into [[FBI Academy|Quantico]] to be an [[FBI]] agent, the plant has been reopened as a bar/bike shop where the death of the Pythonpython is used as a sales tool ,; Greg has been accepted into [[FBI Academy|Quantico]] to be an [[FBI]] agent and John findsgleefully outannounces that he Kristin and he are soon to be parents. ▼They lure the Python into the water treatment plant by having it chase John through a shaft, while they set a bomb near the entrance. Kristin drops a line down another shaft for John to escape. They pull John out and the Python is unable to climb up the shaft. Trapped in the tunnel, the Python returns to the doorway entrance. The group returns to the entrance to trigger the bomb, but it does not detonate. Anton runs back in to reset it. Anton detonates the charges while confronted by the Python, sacrificing himself. While the other four are celebrating their success, the Python emerges unscathed.
