Update to contest scoring
Hey everyone! This year's scoring page is now live, with a few modifications from the rules we used last year following feedback from the contestants. In short:
* Featured list submissions now award 55 points, up from 45
* All eligible article reviews now award 10 points, up from 5
* The "first-level" and "second-level" article bonuses have been removed.
Please let the coordinators know if you have any questions! <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 04:09, 21 June 2025 (UTC)
Wonderful contest--can we associate wikiprojects?
This is great, as we at WP:ELIT are actively working to develop articles about electronic literature in developing countries. Could we participate as a project to list articles? Our regular editathon in July is going to focus on Indian electronic literature... @ME(hu)lit Thank youLoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 13:37, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
:Hey LoveElectronicLiterature, we would love to have the WikiProject participate! Thanks for bringing my attention to a medium I didn't previously know existed. I've gone ahead and left an invite message on the WikiProject talk page. What kind of contributions does your July editathon cover? All improvements to the encyclopedia are worthwhile, but the DCWC awards points only for things like DYK hooks and GA promotions (similar to the WikiCup) — the scoring page has more information. <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 13:53, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
::Thank you for the information. I think our project would be better for a contest for the most improved stubs or start class articles. Our main article for electronic literature has been nominated for a GA, but the rest of our materials are not there yet. Our July editathon is identifying articles in the Hindi, Gujarti wikipedias that should be translated into English, and to translate our main article into those languages. LoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 15:11, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
:::LoveElectronicLiterature you can submit translated articles to WP:DYK if the sources have all been checked and no unsourced material is being translated over. CMD (talk) 16:08, 20 June 2025 (UTC)
::::I do think this is a great idea and much needed of course. But three months is way too long for a wiki contest. Even a month is pushing it in my experience.♦ <span style="font-variant:small-caps;color:#aba67e">Dr. Blofeld</span> 14:36, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
:::::@Dr. Blofeld: Is there any particular reason you believe three months to be too long? It's worth noting that this contest ran last year for the same dates; from what I've read in the post-contest discussion and elsewhere, the length was not a point of concern for the contestants. The DCWC is also much shorter than the WikiCup, which lasts almost all year if you qualify for the later rounds. <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 15:05, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
::::::I personally wouldn't want to commit to three months as a contestant TS. It's a quarter of a year. These probably aren't as time consuming to run as mine but I know mine take a lot of work. I think Wikipedia would be better off doing shorter ones like this more frequently in bursts with periods of intense editing. But if 2024 was successful and the contestants are happy with the duration stick with it, article improvements are always a great thing! I guess if you're including FAs, contestants will need more time to write and get them reviewed.♦ <span style="font-variant:small-caps;color:#aba67e">Dr. Blofeld</span> 15:09, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
Papua New Guinea 50th anniversary DYKs
Hello everyone, I am working to develop one or two sets of Papua New Guinea-related WP:DYKs to run on 16 September, which marks the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinean independence. If you are writing or expanding an article related to Papua New Guinea, if it is submitted after 16 July (and ideally no later than 2 September) please let me know (or list it at WT:DYK, where hopefully I will create a talkpage section on 16 July). It will be up to the promoters to decide which hooks are used, but any others will still be able to go through the normal DYK process. Best, CMD (talk) 02:11, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Rules?
Hi! Really sorry I am unable to understand the rules completely, maybe due to not being an English native as well as new to participate in competitions. I would appreciate if someone explains me better.
* Dates range: The competition dates are during July and September. Can I nominate any article on which I have contributed before these dates, or should it be within this range only?
* Developing countries: I am from Pakistan. But I have contributed to some other countries' articles as well. If I think that an article from US is underlooked, can it be nominated as well, or not?
* Nomination: How to nominate specifically? Should it always be for a GA, FA, or can it be lower than B-class as well? I mean, what is the criteria of the article to be nominated here?
Hope for a kind and helpful response, thank you! M. Billoo 09:02, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
:Hi M.Billoo2000, thanks for the questions, and no need to apologize! Just leaving a courtesy link to this year's scoring rules (WP:DCWC25/S) for the benefit of people reading this discussion.
:# Submissions must have been approved/promoted during the contest period to be eligible for points. For example, if you take an article to FAC, it should be promoted between July 1 and September 30 (and submitted to the DCWC within a week) to count for points.
:#: As a side note, this isn't the first time I've heard a variation of your question this year, so I'll ping the so we can discuss clarifying the language. Is there anything you'd suggest to make the rules clearer on this point?
:# As stated in , submitted articles need to be "" one of the listed countries to be eligible. A submission related to the United States would not be within the scope of the contest. Also, you do not need to be from a developing country in order to participate! :)
:# The processes mentioned in the scoring rules are a complete list of eligible submission types. Articles B-class and below can be submitted if they appear in the Did you know? or In the news sections of the Main Page. I'm happy to elaborate if you'd like more details about how to nominate at any of these venues.
:I hope that helps, and don't hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions! <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 09:42, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
::@M.Billoo2000 Well for example, if you've nominated a GAN before the contest had started though it was approved during the contest, it'd apply. Though if they were approved before the competition starts, it wouldn't apply. Arconning (talk) 10:38, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
:::Thank you so much for elaboration. I am signing up, and looking up for what I can present as best as I can. But please do not mind if I fail to do so. smiley M. Billoo 11:14, 27 June 2025 (UTC)
Invitation to Haiti-related articles
Hi, all! The last DCWC began my interest in Haiti-related articles, and since then, I have fully revamped WP:WikiProject Haiti. You'll notice that Haiti is worth bonus points as one of the "least developed" countries. That makes sense; it might be among the most imperialized countries in the world, which has led to repeated despotic dictatorships, wealth siphoning, coups, and occupations. Still, Haiti is a beautifully mountainous country, with a melting pot of culture and religion and a history full of hard-working authors, journalists, philosophers, painters, community organizers, farmers, sportspeople, and so on...
Well, please know that I will gladly review any DYKs or GANs about Haiti-related articles. If you are interested or don't have many plans for the contest, consider helping out! Averageuntitleduser (talk) 20:10, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Pre-Columbian Indigenous Figures
Hello! I was thinking of working on the article for Anacaona, an Indigenous Taíno woman, for this contest. She was from the chiefdom of Jaragua, which was primarily located in what is now Haiti (specifically from the area that would become the town of Léogâne), but with parts in the Dominican Republic as well. Would she be closely-related enough to either country to be included within the scope of this contest? If so, what country would I submit her under (or could I submit her under both)? Spookyaki (talk) 06:46, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
:Thanks for your question, Spookyaki! It appears to be verifiable that the subject was born and lived in present-day Haiti, so feel free to submit it under that flag. It looks like a very interesting topic in great need of improvement! :) <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 07:50, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Points system
I understand how the points work, but what do the Abbreviations mean? <span style="background-color: orange; color: darkblue">Theeverywhereperson</span> (talk here) 10:17, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
:Hey Theeverywhereperson, which abbreviations are you referring to? If it's the process initialisms (FA, GA, etc.), they are expanded and linked at of the scoring page. In general, if you see an abbreviation you're unfamiliar with, you can find it on this page or search for it with the prefix WP:. Let me know if you have any other questions! <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 10:22, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
Just a question about GAs
the page for WP:GA says you must be in the top five editors for it to not count as a drive-by nom. Does this contest follow by that rule? Because the contest says merely copyediting isn't enough. But what if I did manage to get into top 5 editors by just copyediting? Will it still count as a drive by nom and thus WP:gaming the system by the contest's standard? Just asking this because one of my pending GA submissions (Xuanwu Gate Incident) is exactly like that. It's a GA quality article somehow sitting at B class still so I got myself into top 5 editors by copyediting to submit it for GA once again. <b style="font-family:helvetica;color:green">Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ </b><b style="font-family:helvetica;border:transparent;padding:0 9px;background:linear-gradient(#810011,black);color:#19443C;border-radius:6px">critique me</b> 15:50, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
:Hey Yelps, thanks for your question! The contest has somewhat stricter criteria than the GAN process on this point. Since you appear to have less than 2% authorship on this article, I don't think that would meet the threshold set by the "" language in the scoring rules. Let me know if you have any questions! <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 06:08, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
::Got it. But then how strict is the contest being? Should I be the author of atleast 5% of an article to be eligible? <b style="font-family:helvetica;color:green">Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ </b><b style="font-family:helvetica;border:transparent;padding:0 9px;background:linear-gradient(#810011,black);color:#19443C;border-radius:6px">critique me</b> 06:48, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
:::This is something the coordinators look at on a case-by-case basis — the scoring rules intentionally leave out any numerical thresholds for this, so I'm unable to provide any here. I would look at the spirit of the law rather than the letter; the same line of the rules states that we generally prefer that you be the primary author (or close to that) for any article you submit. For Xuanwu Gate Incident, it already seems to be fairly developed and 86% of the article has been written by the primary author, so it is unlikely you'll be able to submit it to the DCWC. However, if your GAN the Old Elm passes, you have clearly written the majority of its content and could thus submit it. I hope that clarifies things! <span class="nowrap">—<span style="color: #0b541f;">TechnoSquirrel69</span></span> <small>(<span style="color: #0b541f;">sigh</span>)</small> 07:12, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
::::Understood! I guess I'll work on Cuisine of Pará to GA status once I have ample time (hopefully next week!) seeing I turned the article from a state in need of copyedit and having no citations to a decent-ish article. <b style="font-family:helvetica;color:green">Yelps ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ </b><b style="font-family:helvetica;border:transparent;padding:0 9px;background:linear-gradient(#810011,black);color:#19443C;border-radius:6px">critique me</b> 07:31, 4 July 2025 (UTC)
