A Linux distribution or GNU/Linux distribution (or a distro) is a Unix-like operating system comprising software components such as the Linux kernel, the GNU toolchain, and assorted free and open source software. Some proprietary software is found in certain distributions and is not free software. A Linux Distribution — or distro, en parlante — is created by individuals, groups and organizations from around the world.

Defamer article
Companies such as Red Hat, SUSE and Mandriva, and community projects such as Debian and Gentoo Linux, assemble and test the software before releasing their distribution. There are currently over two hundred Linux distribution projects in active development, revising and improving their respective distribution.
From the Defamer article:
:Hours of tireless research and a few friendly e-mails from Black’s publicist have disabused us of the notion that any onanistic camera work exists, and that the Wikipedia submitter is having some fun at the actor’s expense. ($9.99? Nothing that good ever happens to us.)
:Yes, our thoughts on the truth-telling skills of celebrity publicists are well documented, but there’s no good reason to be skeptical in this instance. Black doesn’t even have a website (Tenacious D’s notwithstanding), unless he’s moonlighting in Arizona real estate, and the flack notes JB’s been in New Zealand shooting King Kong since August. While we’re pretty sure masturbation is legal in New Zealand, we imagine it would be exceedingly difficult to use one of Peter Jackson’s expensive movie cameras to shoot this kind of DVD bonus feature for the fans.

Another HistoryJack Black
There's a problem, there are two jack blacks. One that is an actor, and one that wrote the book You Can't Win
Before the first distributions, a would-be Linux user was required to be something of a Unix expert, not only knowing what libraries and executables were needed to successfully get Linux to boot and run, but also important details concerning configuration and placement of files in the system.
:Yes we know, that's why this article is called Jack Black <u>(actor)</u>

Dead Kennedy's
Linux distributions began to appear soon after the Linux kernel was first used by individuals outside the original Linux programmers. They were more interested in developing the operating system than in application programs, the user interface or convenient packaging.
Jack Black uses almost the same set of facial expressions as lead singer, Jello Biafra, of the Dead Kennedy's. Find some live footage, you'll see what I mean.

* MCC Interim Linux, which was made available to the public for download on the ftp server of University of Manchester in February, 1992;
Jack Black - another movie appearence
* TAMU, created by individuals at Texas A&M University about the same time, and
* SLS (Softlanding Linux System).

Jack Black was in The Neverending Story 3 (1994). He played the character Slip, Leader of The Nasties. source - www.imdb.com
None of these distributions were well maintained, so Patrick Volkerding released a distribution based on SLS, which he called Slackware; this is the oldest distribution still in active development.

Anchorman
Linux distributions attracted users as an alternative to the Microsoft Windows operating systems on the PC and to Mac OS on the Apple Macintosh. Most early adopters were used to Unix from work or school. They embraced Linux for its stability, low cost and for the inclusion of the source code for most or all of the software included.

He also had a small role in Anchorman (2004)
The distributions were originally simply a convenience, but today they have become the usual resort even for Unix or Linux gurus. To date Linux has proven more popular in the server market, primarily for Web and database servers (see also LAMP), than in the desktop market.

Composition
The Linux kernel, GNU, and most of the additional software making up a typical Linux distribution are free and open source software, distributed by its maintainers both as pre-compiled binaries and in source code form, allowing users to compile the original source code into binary or executable form if they wish.

:That role is uncredited
A Linux distribution almost always offers compiled versions of the Linux kernel, GNU system libraries and assorted programs that make up the rest of an operating system. Many provide an install program / procedure akin to that provided with other operating systems which are distributed in binary form (e.g., Solaris Operating Environment, Microsoft Windows, etc.). Other self-hosting distributions (e.g., Gentoo Linux, etc.) provide the source code of all software but only binaries of a basic kernel, compiler tools (e.g, a compiler, make utility and so on), and an installer; the installer compiles all the software specifically for the microarchitecture of the user's machine.

Picture
Distributions are normally segmented into packages, each holding a specific application or service; one package may hold a library for handling PNG images, another may contain a number of fonts, while a third one supplies a web browser.
Can we get a better picture? Something from Tenacious D, perhaps. Seems more fitting, given what hes better known for.

I agree, especially since that's what he most typically looks like anyway.
In addition to providing packaged compiled code, most distributions offer tools for installation/removal of packages that are more powerful than simple file archiver. This software is said to be the package management system of the distribution. Each package intended for such a PMS contains meta-information like description, version, "dependencies", etc. The package management system can evaluate this meta-information, to allow package searches, automatic upgrade to newer versions, checking that all dependencies of a package are fulfilled and/or fulfilling them automatically, and more. Package management systems include:

X Files
*RPM &mdash; now RPM Package Manager, but originally Red Hat Package Manager, originally from Red Hat but now used by many other distributors as well
*deb &mdash; Debian package, originally from Debian but also used by others
*tgz or tar.gz &mdash; standard tar + gzip, possibly with some extra control files &mdash; used by Slackware and others, or sometimes when distributing very simple handmade packages
*ebuild &mdash; the file containing information on how to retrieve, compile, and install a package in Gentoo's Portage system using the command emerge. Typically these are source-primary installs, though binary packages can be installed in this fashion as well.
*src &mdash; building the packages from source (often binary packages are provided in parallel on many systems).

I'm watching the X Files now, with this lightning boy, and he looks like the owner of some video arcade in this episode. I'm not sure, but it sure looks like him. Not sure to put it in the article though, this is a very old episode and I'm not sure if it's exactly him.
Although Linux distributions typically contain much more software than proprietary operating systems, it is normal for local administrators to install software not included with the distribution. An example would be a newer version of a software application than that supplied with a distribution, or an alternative to that chosen by the distribution (e.g., KDE rather than GNOME or vice versa). If the additional software is distributed in source-only form, this approach requires local compilation. However, if additional software is locally added, the 'state' of the local system may fall out of synchronization with the state of the package manager's database. If so, the local administrator user will be required to take additional measures to ensure the entire system is kept up to date, that all required patches are installed, etc. The package manager may no longer be able to do so automatically.

: Yes, he takes part in some episode of "The X Files" (episode # 3.3: "D.P.O.", acording to The Greatest Jack Black Site in the World, but I personally don't remember to have seen him, though it's possible, I didn't know him at the time when I've probably watched the episode. --Tzeck 11:10, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
Most distributions install packages, including the kernel and other core operating system components, in a predetermined configuration. Few now require or even permit configuration adjustments at first install time. This is less daunting, particularly for new users, but not always acceptable. Since much software must be carefully configured to be useful, to work correctly with other software or to be secure, local administrators will often be obliged to spend time reviewing and reconfiguring assorted software. Some distributions go to considerable lengths to specifically adjust all (or some) of the software they include to their particular distribution (___location of particular files and so on), but not all do so. Some distributions provide configuration tools to assist in this process, but, again, not all. Note that such adjustments may be required for a particular site and that it is not, in principle, possible for anyone including a distribution's designer to preconfigure the software provided to meet individual requirements. As with all operating systems, Linux and its distributions impose a system administration obligation on its users/operators/owners. Linux distributors differ from most operating system vendors in not claiming that "no administration is required." This honesty can worry potential users who have been told otherwise in marketing.

I do confirm so, I've just watched the episode and he was in the credits
By replacing everything provided in a distribution, an administrator may reach a 'distribution-less' state: everything was retrieved, compiled, configured, and installed locally. It is possible to build such a system from scratch, bypassing any distribution altogether, but one needs a way to generate the first binaries until the system is self-hosting (i.e., has a bootable kernel, and compilation tools to generate more binaries). This can be done via compilation on another system capable of building binaries for the intended target (possibly by cross-compilation). See Linux From Scratch Guide for instructions.

Tenacious D
Choosing Linux distributions
This makes no mention of perhaps the single most responsible role for his current stardom, and that is the one of himself in the HBO show "Tenacious D."

: So tell us about it! The great thing about Wikipedia is that anyone, yes anyone, even you, can add information. I know next to nothing about that, so why don't you enlighten us? --Jacqui M Schedler 04:43, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
Read Comparison of Linux distributions to help make up your mind about which distribution to use.

Projects in the mill
These are the most popular according to and therefore the most common distributions of Linux for PCs and other workstations, listed alphabetically.
So, does anyone else have information regarding Black's upcoming projects? It feels unfair to single a couple of them out by name in the article, when there are 5 or so in the pipeline for the next two years. --Jacqui M Schedler 05:09, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

: With respect, an encycopedia doesn't give out this kind of information. People should see links to his IMDB page or whatever if they want that sort of information.
They can use different file base distributions (e.g., dpkg for Debian, RPM for Fedora), desktop environment (e.g., KDE, GNOME, XFce), media (e.g., 1 or 2 floppies, LiveCD, bootable Keydrive, only hard disk installation), localization (setting for a language and country), free software direction or not, for a specific purpose (e.g., firewalls and security, robotics, desktop workstation) and so on.

:: (please sign your comments) I agree, and with that, I am taking the section with new projects that have not yet been released, out. --Jacquelyn Marie 18:23, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
Interdistribution issues
The Linux Standard Base is an organization devoted to allowing co-operation between different distributions. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard is an organization devoted to recommending a standard filenaming chart, notably the basic directory names found on the root of the tree of any a Linux filesystem.

::: i don't agree as some of the future work is about set in stone, he will star in the king kong remake, why is it so wrong to show that on wiki. once the movie has been released the piece could be added to the article.

"Black is perhaps best-known in for his role as the greedy 1930s-era film director Carl Denham in Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong."

This seems to have a conflict in POV to me. Not only do I disagree with the statement (School of Rock was definitively Black's rise to being a household name) but it's got definitive POV.

In a few of his songs he can be quoted as saying "Dianetics junior much better than krishna...Dianetics Junior much better indeed" (another city hall lyric i believe). == Marijuana ==

In the article it says, "Black supports the legalization of marijuana and referred to those who wished to keep it banned as 'old fucking shrivs' in the Tenacious D song, 'City Hall'." This seems a little slack to me. Although I'm not saying I don't believe that Jack Black supports the legalization of Marijuana, there should be a citation other than the lyrics of a commedy song. In the same song, Black calls for such things as riots to tear down society and for public and private transportation to be replaced by "tube" travelling. However, the article doesn't state these as opinions. If Black supports the legalization of Marijuana, we should have a better source than this.

polltop Move to Jack Black. Duja 07:05, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
----
Jack Black (actor) → Jack Black — Links throughout Wikipedia that refer to ANY person named Jack Black refer to the actor 10 times as much as all the other Jack Blacks combined (this can be seen by checking the What Links Here pages for each. There are very few links to the other Jack Blacks.) So we know the other Jack Blacks are not extremely significant figures. Second, if you check what links to the plain Jack Black ->Black, you'll notice virtually ALL refer to the actor. Thus, many links are leading to a disambiguation page when none is necessary. The actor is by far the most common person searched for named Jack Black. Thus, we should follow the Michael Jackson rule here. Bssc81 19:42, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

The fact that most Jack Black links point to the disambig page is a flag that those links need to be fixed just as much as it is evidence that this page should be moved. *Oppose Though I plan to name my first three kids after him, Jack Black may not be the biggest Jack Black ten years from now. We should stick with the normal format--it doesn't diminish his prowess. For that matter, I wouldn't give Michael Jackson (twisted, attention-starved "adult" vestige of the popular child singer) the exclusive MJ page either. Not a battle I'd engage in, though--it'd just give him more attention, which is a mistake. ===Discussion===
Add any additional comments:
* Response to some people above - he may not be as famous as Michael Jackson, but it's pretty close when you consider his fame relative to other people named Jack Black. Nobody else comes close - as I mentioned, look at how few links there are to the "secondary" Jack Blacks. Consider John Adams (and see John Adams (disambiguation)). Far more people are named "John Adams" than "Jack Black", yet the fact that one single John Adams is far more popular than the others is why the article is not named "John Adams (former U.S. president)". I'm not sure what the rule of thumb is, but the fact that 90%+ links to "Jack Black" are intended for the actor should mean something. As a secondary reason, it's a lot less work to move this page than to change every single link to "Jack Black". --Bssc81 23:46, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
** Response to above "I'm sorry...": Don't be sorry. I'm not opposing it for that reason; I don't think we should create precedents that might spawn time-consuming discussions like this over every famous person whose fans want them to have a Wiki-exclusive on their name. I certainly was not saying that my opinion of MJ's antics should be the determining factor in titling his article. I also think it's a safe bet that Ben Franklin will still be a household name in ten years. -Eric (talk) 14:50, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Regarding the statement in the trivia section that JB made a cameo in Arrested Development episode 302, "For British Eyes Only": none of the darts players look that much like JB. Does someone have a cite for this? If not, I would vote to remove it, as much as I wish it were true.

:Right after the barkeep tells Michael "unless you're just here for the Poppins", Jack looks almost directly at the camera. He's wearing a beret, and clean-shaven, but it's him, all right. I don't think it was a credited role, so citing it may be tricky...though it seems a moot point as the trivia section is gone now.

Someone should also add to the article Jack Black's role in Accetable.tv and VH1. <small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.118.91.52 (talk) 18:01, 1 March 2007 (UTC).</small><!-- HagermanBot Auto-Unsigned -->
