Abandoned as a child, he was taken in by the [[Roma (people)|gypsy]] [[witch]] [[Margali Szardos]] and raised as one of them. As a teenager, his mutant nature also bestowed on him superhuman agility and reflexes, the ability to see in the dark and to become near-[[invisible]] in the dark, and the power to [[teleport]] short distances, leaving behind the smell of [[Brimstone (sulfur)|brimstone]]. This ability is known informally as "bamfing". When he teleports in the comics, he leaves behind a cloud of smoke which is usually lettered with the sound effect *bamf*, the noise of air rushing in to fill the space he has just vacated. He appears to be able to cling to surfaces in a manner similar to [[Spider-Man]].

Wagner spent some time in the [[Munich]] [[Circus (performing art)|circus]], but eventually his appearance left him persecuted and hunted. He was rescued from a mob by [[Professor Charles Xavier]], who invited him to join his second team of X-Men. There, Wagner adopted the name Nightcrawler.

With the X-Men, Nightcrawler at last found a home and a family, and his humorous, swashbuckling [[Errol Flynn]]-like nature came to the fore. He also found a close friend in his fellow X-Man [[Wolverine (comics)|Wolverine]].

After some years with the X-Men, Nightcrawler departed to become leader of the [[United Kingdom|UK]]-based group [[Excalibur (comics)|Excalibur]], but he eventually returned to the X-Men.

He also had a small role in [[Anchorman:_The_Legend_of_Ron_Burgundy|Anchorman (2004)]]

Among his more interesting character traits, Wagner is an extremely religious man. A devout [[Catholic]], his [[demon]]ic appearance obviously makes it very difficult to attend church services. Despite this, as mutants in the Marvel Universe become more mainstream, he even managed to become a Catholic priest, though he later removed himself from the position, as he felt too tempted by romance.

Wagner has, at various points, used a personal [[hologram|holographic]] device to appear as a normal human, though this device is rarely used unless absolutely necessary.

It was recently revealed that his mother is definitely the mutant terrorist [[Mystique]] (as has been hinted at to varying degrees, since they first appeared together; this makes [[Rogue (comics)|Rogue]] his foster sister). It was also revealed that, though Mystique was married to a wealthy German at the time (Herr Wagner, one would assume), Nightcrawler's father was [[Azazel]], a member of a race of demonic-looking mutants dating back to [[Bible|Biblical]] times, who were banished to another dimension by another race of angelic mutants.

== Picture ==

Comic book writing-veteran [[Chris Claremont]] had originally intended for Mystique and [[Destiny_(Marvel_Comics)|Destiny]] to have been Nightcrawler's biological parents (Mystique, being a shapeshifter, would have taken the form of a man and impregnated Destiny.) Marvel, however, felt the idea to be too controversial and it was nixed.

Can we get a better picture? Something from Tenacious D, perhaps. Seems more fitting, given what hes better known for.

I agree, especially since that's what he most typically looks like anyway.

I'm watching the X Files now, with this lightning boy, and he looks like the owner of some video arcade in this episode. I'm not sure, but it sure looks like him. Not sure to put it in the article though, this is a very old episode and I'm not sure if it's exactly him.

In the article it says, "Black supports the legalization of marijuana and referred to those who wished to keep it banned as 'old fucking shrivs' in the Tenacious D song, 'City Hall'." This seems a little slack to me. Although I'm not saying I don't believe that Jack Black supports the legalization of Marijuana, there should be a citation other than the lyrics of a commedy song. In the same song, Black calls for such things as riots to tear down society and for public and private transportation to be replaced by "tube" travelling. However, the article doesn't state these as opinions. If Black supports the legalization of Marijuana, we should have a better source than this.

Far more people are named "John Adams" than "Jack Black", yet the fact that one single John Adams is far more popular than the others is why the article is not named "John Adams (former U.S. president)". :Right after the barkeep tells Michael "unless you're just here for the Poppins", Jack looks almost directly at the camera. He's wearing a beret, and clean-shaven, but it's him, all right. I don't think it was a credited role, so citing it may be tricky...though it seems a moot point as the trivia section is gone now.
