Manchester Business School (MBS) is the business and management school of the University of Manchester in England. MBS is said to be "one of grand old men of British business schools" as it was founded in 1965 (together with the London Business School) after the Franks Report recommended the establishment of two high quality schools, as part of existing universities but with considerable autonomy. MBS is the first school in the United Kingdom to offer MBA courses and according to the Financial Times it is ranked among the top 25 in the world.
Background
The "new" Manchester Business School was formed in 2004 as a result of the merger of the Manchester School of Accounting and Finance, the "old" Manchester Business School (which was founded in 1965), and the Institute of Innovation Research of the Victoria University of Manchester and the Manchester School of Management of UMIST. The school comes under the Faculty of Humanities of the university..
It offers Ph.D, MBA (full time and executive), several specialist masters programmes as well as top-ranked undergraduate degrees. As of 2006, a minimum work experience of 3 years and a minimum Graduate Management Admissions Test score of 600 is required for admission to the MBA programs. The 18 months full time MBA program is known for its "Manchester Method" which puts emphasis on learning by doing throughout the entire duration of the programme, including significant real life projects , compared to arguably more academic MBA courses. The school has a high international student composition as three quarter of its student body is from outside the UK.
Professor Michael Luger is the new Director since January 2007; he came from the Kenan-Flagler Business School, part of University of North Carolina.
Accreditation and reputation
The Manchester Business School is part of a small and select band of institutions worldwide which receive triple accreditation by AACSB International, AMBA and EQUIS.
The school was recently ranked among the top 25 business schools in the world for the second time for its MBA program, and 2nd in the world for its doctoral program . It is placed 9th in Europe and 4th in the UK, while being 5th in the world for international business and 4th in Europe for percentage salary increase of its graduates. Regarding international experience, MBS is 6th in the world and 1st in the UK as well as is ranked in the world's top 13 for the career progress of its alumni.
Furthermore, Manchester Business School was selected by HM Treasury as part of the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme which exempts MBA-graduates from the world's top 50 business schools from the usual visa requirements to work in the UK. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) awarded the school's teaching quality with 24 points out of 24. In the previous 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (pre-merger) the 'old' Manchester Business School and Manchester School of Management were rated 5; and Manchester School of Accounting and Finance was rated 5* (five star).
