Rating scales used online: Remove redundant not

Line 1:
A '''rating scale''' is a set of categories designed to elicit information about a [[quantitative]] attribute in social science. Common examples are the [[Likert scale]] and 1-10 rating scales for which a person selects the number which is considered to reflect the perceived quality of a product.

In [[Psychometrics]], rating scales are often referenced to a statement which expresses an attitude or perception toward something. The most common example of such a rating scale is the Likert scale, in which a person is asked to select a category label from a list indicating the extent of disagreement or agreement with a statement.
Thank-you. [[User:Robeykr|Jason Palpatine]] 06:14, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

The basic feature of any rating scale is that it consists of a number of categories. These are usually assigned integers. For example, an example of the use of a Likert scale is as follows.
== Point taken ==

:'''Statement:''' I could not live without my iPod.
From the guideline page Assume good faith:
* ''[R]emember to be patient with newcomers, who will be unfamiliar with Wikipedia's culture and rules . . . many newcomers bring with them experience or expertise for which they expect immediate respect. Behaviours arising from these perspectives are not necessarily malicious.''

:'''Response options:'''
My schooling was . . . eccentric. I came to regard a lack of grammatical and lexical knowledge as others might regard nails on a chalkboard. (My manifesto is Lynne Truss's ''Eats, Shoots and Leaves'', an excellent and erudite work that has been mysteriously classified as humor.)

:*1. Strongly Disagree
Just as I smelled triumph through a loophole of sorts, I read from the same page:
:*2. Disagree
* ''Correct, but don't scold.''
:*3. Agree
:*4. Strongly Agree

It is common to treat the numbers obtained from a rating scale directly as measurements by calculating averages, or more generally any [[arithmetic]] operations. Doing so is not however justified. In terms of the [[levels of measurement]] proposed by S.S. Stevens, the data are ordinal categorisations. This means, for example, that to agree strongly with the above statement implies a more favourable perception of iPods than does to agree with the statement. However, the numbers are not interval-level measurements in Stevens' schema, which means that equal differences do not represent equal intervals between the degree to which one values iPods. For example, the difference between strong agreement and agreement is not necessarily the same as the difference between disagreement and agreement. Strictly, even demonstrating that categories are ordinal requires empirical evidence based on patterns of responses (Andrich, 1978).
Point taken.

More than one rating scale is required to [[measurement|measure]] an attitude or perception due to the requirement for statistical comparisons between the categories in the [[polytomous Rasch model]] for ordered categories (Andrich, 1978). In terms of [[Classical test theory]], more than one question is required to obtain an index of internal reliability such as [[Cronbach's alpha]] (Cronbach, 1951) which is a basic criterion for assessing the effectiveness of a rating scale and, more generally, a psychometric instrument.
As you may have gathered from my User page, I am very green here (here on the planet, I mean; I’m 16) and more than a bit sarcastic (treating comics as religious icons).

== Rating scales used online ==
I think I cut myself on Hanlon’s Razor.

Rating scales are used widely online in an attempt to provide indications of consumer opinions of products. Examples of sites which employ ratings scales are [[IMDb]], [[Epinions.com]], [[Internet Book List]], [[Yahoo! Movies]], [[Amazon.com]], [[BoardGameGeek]], [[TV.com]] and [[Ratings.net]]. The [[Criticker]] website uses a rating scale from 0 to 100 in order to obtain "personalised film recommendations".
==Thanks==
Muchas gracias por haber defendido mi página de usuario, [[User:SqueakBox|SqueakBox]] July 3, 2005 17:50 (UTC)

In almost all cases, online rating scales only allow one rating per user per product, though there are exceptions such as ''Ratings.net'', which allows users to rate products in relation to several qualities. Most online rating facilities also provide few or no qualitative descriptions of the rating categories, although again there are exceptions such as ''Yahoo! Movies'' which labels each of the categories between F and A+ and BoardGameGeek, which provides explicit descriptions of each category from 1 to 10. Often, only the top and bottom category is described, such as on ''IMDb'''s online rating facility.
==[[G.I. Joe]]==
'''G.I. Joe: An Austro-Hungarian Hero'''

With each user rating a product only once, for example in a category from 1 to 10, there is no means for evaluating internal [[reliability (statistics)|reliability]] using an index such as [[Cronbach's alpha]]. It is therefore impossible to evaluate the [[validity]] of the ratings as measures of viewer perceptions. Establishing validity would require establishing both reliability and accuracy (i.e. that the ratings represent what they are supposed to represent).
==Sorry==

Another fundamental issue is that online ratings usually involve convenience [[sampling (statistics)|sampling]] much like television polls, i.e., they represent only the conglomeration of those inclined to submit ratings.
Please move the templates [[:Template:Dbraceyrulestalkpage]], [[:Template:Dbraceyrulestemplate]] and [[:Template:Dbraceyrulestemplate2]] into your user space. Templates that are only for your personal use do not belong in the general Template area. For instance, you could move [[:Template:Dbraceyrulestemplate2]] to [[User:Dbraceyrules/template2]] and then use it by putting <nowiki>{{User:Dbraceyrules/template2}}</nowiki> on your user page. For detailed information on how to move a page, see [[m:Help:Moving a page]]. I have asked you to do this before. If you do not move these templates within 3 days, I will nominate them on [[Wikipedia:Templates for deletion]]. Sampling is one factor which can lead to results which have a specific bias or are only relevant to a specific subgroup. To illustrate the importance of such factors, consider an example. Suppose that a film's marketing strategy and reputation is such that 90% of its audience are attracted to the particular kind of film; i.e. it does not appeal to a broad audience. Suppose also that the film is very popular among the audience that does see the film and, in addition, that those who feel most strongly about the film are inclined to rate the film online. This combination may lead to very high ratings of the film which do not generalize beyond the people who actually see the film (or possibly even beyond those who actually rate it).
:Oops, sorry, I must have missed your first warning. I edited as you asked. I didn't know that I needed a personal user space. Sorry[[User:Dbraceyrules|Horatii]] 23:53, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

Qualitative description of categories is an important feature of a rating scale. For example, if only the points 1-10 are given without description, some people may select 10 rarely whereas other may select the category often. If, instead, "10" is described as "near flawless", the category is more likely to mean the same thing to different people. This applies to all categories, not just the extreme points. Even with category descriptions, some may be harsher raters than others. Rater harshness is also a consideration in marking essays in educational contexts. [http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:o1l_qRDI9QwJ:www.cambridgeesol.org/rs_notes/rs_nts13.pdf+rater+harshness+references&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=4].
::Another thing, I used a different title and that why the one you had prescribed has a different link. [[User:Dbraceyrules|Horatii]] 23:57, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

These issues are also compounded when aggregated statistics such as averages are used for lists and rankings of products. User ratings are at best [[levels of measurement|ordinal]] categorizations. While it is not uncommon to calculate averages or means for such data, doing so cannot be justified because in calculating averages, equal intervals are required to represent the same difference between levels of perceived quality. The key problems with aggregate data based on the kinds of rating scales commonly used online are as follow:
: Thanks for taking care of this! [[User:FreplySpang|FreplySpang]] [[User talk:FreplySpang|(talk)]] 23:59, 11 July 2005 (UTC)
*Averages should not be calculated for data of the kind collected.
*It is usually impossible to evaluate the reliability or validity of user ratings.
*Products are not compared with respect to explicit, let alone common, criteria.
*Only users inclined to submit a rating for a product do so.
*Data are not usually published in a form that permits evaluation of the product ratings.

Thanks for your help in reverting the vandal hitting my user page. An oddity: The IP that was spuriously adding my name to various articles had been used, only two hours earlier, to create a stub about [[Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak]]. Thanks for the Infernokrush. Normally, those "updating to Ebonics" style things are derisive, but that one actually manages to keep the meaning of the scene rather well. Quite surprisingly good. Reminds me of my days in Carrboro, NC, when I had thoughts of writing a ''Midsummer's Night Dream'' set among street gangs, with Obi Wan (for Oberon) and Titania (for Titania...I didn't rethink everything) and a Theater In the Park for the theater in the park. Later, I saw what a hackneyed idea it was. Everyone has done it. Anyway, it's a good non-sonnet piece, alright. Hi, I wanted to let you know of the discussion I've been having with this editor (tregoweth) as well. I'm going to follow these suggestions for adding AFF links to important articles on Wikipedia. Please let me know you are in agreement with him before I make the changes only to have them deleted again. Thanks for your help in adding content to Wikipedia!

"In reply to your comment on my user page, it's still advertising, even if the organization is worthy and nonprofit. Dropping plugs into articles is not the way to go about it.

If there is an article about a particular film, then a link to AFF would probably be OK. But adding a blurb about a movie to an article about someone interviewed in the movie is a bit much. tregoweth 15:22, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

The general thing to remember is Wikipedia is not a soapbox. One problem is that some of the text you inserted seemed to come direct from marketing materials, which is jarring in an encyclopedia article. In the Lillian Gish article, for example, you added:

The Emmy-award winning documentary Lillian Gish: An Actor's Life for Me by Terry Sanders of American Film Foundation is a personal and candid celebration of the actress' life.

I would suggest something more neutral, like:
Gish's life is documented in [Terry Sanders]' 1999 documentary [Lillian Gish: An Actor's Life for Me].

And, in external links,

* [http://www.americanfilmfoundation.com/order/lillian_gish.shtml Lillian Gish: An Actor's Life for Me] (American Film Foundation)

In some of the articles, mentioning that they appeared in such-and-such documentary seems odd, especially if the article is very short and they are just an interviewee, not the subject. Obviously, Maya Lin's documentary should be in the article,, since it won an Oscar; the Gish and Neil Simon documentaries probably deserve mention also. But something like Into the Future isn't a big part of Tim Berners-Lee's career, so it probably shouldn't be in the article. It may be worth mentioning in Robert MacNeil's article among his other works, but just as a straight factual item ("narrator and interviewee, Into the Future (2000 documentary)").

Also, I apologize if I've come across as harsh or otherwise negative.; Any time I see someone add a lot of links to one site, the "spammer!" alarms go off in my head, but I now see that you meant well. Feel free to ask me for any more help; I'm just a regular user, but I think I know my way around here. :) tregoweth 02:08, July 27, 2005 (UTC) "

Thanks for reverting the vandalism of my user page. Actually, this whole group of IP 212.138.47.* have been into this type of behavior, my user page was vandalized several times by one of them, until the IP was blocked by [[User:Mel Etitis]] yesterday. The vandal then created an account and vandalized my page again, which Mel blocked. So, today, the vandal resorted to making an account yet again just to vandalize my page. The main grudge the vandal bears against me is quite surprising, at least to me. If you look into the page history of [[Rohingya]], you can see that the article was initially a copyvio from a website. I organized the article into sections and edited the copyvio sections, added "External links" section (which was previously named as "Free Rohingya campaign web directory" or something like that. I also pointed that out in the talk page ([[Talk:Rohingya]]). For some surprising reason, the IP block 212.138.47.* were quite angry with the organization and left obscene comments on the talk page. Recently, they went on asking people how to delete user pages (See [[User talk:Malathion]] and [[User talk:Ragib]]). After that, they started leaving <nowiki>{{vfd}} and {{speedy}}</nowiki> tags in the talk page of one of the persons I corresponded about this (see [[User talk:Kunyia]]) and in my user page. I realize that the IP block is a dynamic IP range, and there are good edits from that range, but all of the vandals participating in the above vandalisms are from 212.138.47.* . My only hope is that they'd get tired of it and stop.

Sorry about this, I don't know how else to talk to you.

Alright, here's the deal on my musicianforums.com stuff.

Over at musicianforums.com, we made an mx dictionary with all of the popular terms and such and explaining their meanings and origins. I was then asked by a mod to index all of the definitions on wikipedia. I have also been putting the "Courtesy of musicianforums.com" in, so that the users of mx will see that the definition refers to that forum, and not to something else, to prevent confusion. Don't worry this isn't spam, and it even has the potential to increase wikipedia's traffic by up to 80,000 users!

So, in conclusion, there are no copyright issues, as not only do I have permission to post these definitions, but I was asked to. Not only that, but I'm bringing in site views, traffic, definitions, and even new users for you, wikipedia.

Anyways, sorry for any confusion, and I'm going to continue posting definitions. Also, if you explain to me how to use user talk, I will utilize it next time around.

Thanks,
-Adam

So you may not need more traffic. As for unhelpful and unencyclopedic, they are helping up to 80,000 people use wiki for popular internet definitions, and a large portion of these definitions apply to other internet forums aswell. Unenecyclopedic? I think for the most part, they <i>are</i> encyclopedic, with a few exceptions. Feel free to delete the exceptions, but I really don't think that all of my definitions should be removed, as some of them actually are helpful and have not been indexed yet.

Thanks Again,
-Adam

I'm unfortunately busy, but could you get the IP blocked? I added a VfD notice to [[Laura Kellett]], and it was removed before I could even finish adding it to [[WP:VfD]]. Thank you for voting to support [[Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Malathion|my RFA]]. I've been promoted, and I promise to wield the mop with good faith, patience, and fairness... except when I'm exterminating vandals with the M-16 recoilless nuclear Gatling mop. --[[User:malathion|malathion]] [[User talk:malathion|<b>talk</b>]] 08:09, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

== You don't know what you've done. ==

I love wikipedia. It's the greatest resource on the web. But when I edited the China article, I didn't do it out of hate. I did to warn the public. Someday you'll look back on this day and realise the mistakes you've made.

Every comment you erased. Every liberty you will lose.
Every paragraph you destroyed. Every chinaman that whips you.

Remember this day,

God Bless America,

:Ah, but I know what FreplySpang has done: reverted [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=China&amp;diff=prev&amp;oldid=20689302 a collection of puerile changes]. -- [[User:Hoary|Hoary]] 14:00, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for you support on my recent RFA, and for all the help you gave me a couple months ago with the SummerFR problems. Please let me know if I can help with any particular administrative responsibilities, or if you have any problems with the way I use the admin tools. Cheers. --[[User:BaronLarf|Baron]][[User talk:BaronLarf|Larf]] 00:38, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

== Copyright question ==
Could you explain why [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerner_Corporation Cerner's] page is in violation? I think it may have been in violation when you first spotted it, but I believe it has been fixed. I no longer see any of the text from the wikipedia page on the site listed to have the copyright problem. Thanks for your help.
:I believe my question was already answered [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:SimonP#Copyright_question here]... thanks. --[[User:Matthewsmith|Matt Smith]] 17:16, August 11, 2005 (UTC)
