As [[auto racing]] is a dangerous sport, many individuals have been killed in crashes related to the sport, either in a race, in qualifying, in practice or a private testing session. These deaths have been a common occurrence, both among racers and spectators; although, advances in safety technology and in a few races speed limiting devices have made deaths much less common in recent years. Spectacular accidents have often spurred increased safety measures and even rules changes. The worst motorsports accident was [[Pierre Levegh]]'s 1955 [[1955 Le Mans disaster|crash]] at [[24 Hours of Le Mans|Le Mans]] that killed him and about 80 spectators.
'''Roderick MacKinnon''' (born [[19 February]] [[1956]] in [[Burlington, Massachusetts]]) is a professor of Molecular Neurobiology and [[Biophysics]] at [[Rockefeller University]] who in [[2003]] was awarded the [[Nobel Prize in Chemistry]] for his work on the structure and operation of [[ion channel]]s. (That year [[Peter Agre]] shared the prize for his independent investigations of water channels). His prize-winning research was conducted primarily at the [[Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source]] (CHESS) of [[Cornell University]], and at the [[National Synchrotron Light Source]] (NSLS) of [[Brookhaven National Laboratory]].
Before MacKinnon, the detailed molecular architecture of channels and the exact means by which they convey ions remained speculative. But in [[1998]], despite a barrier to the [[structural biology|structural]] study of [[integral membrane protein]]s that had thwarted most attempts for decades, MacKinnon and colleagues unlocked the architecture of a [[potassium channel]] from bacteria with [[X-ray crystallography]]. Science Magazine called the achievement "one of the 10 biggest science stories of 1998."
