''EI'' conosceha conosciuto tre edizioni. La prima ('''''EI''''' ¹) è stata pubblicata in quattro volumi, più un supplemento, fra il [[1913]] e il [[1938]] in [[lingua inglese|inglese]], [[lingua tedesca|tedescatedesco]] e [[Lingualingua francese|francese]], cuialle poiquali si è poi affiancata un’edizioneun'edizione in [[Lingualingua turca|turco]], specializzata prevalentemente sullasu cultura e la storia turca, ottomana e contemporanea.<br />

Una versione ridotta è stata pubblicata nel [[1953]] sotto il titolo ''Shorter Encyclopaedia of Islam'' ('''SEI'''), e copre i settori in particolare della [[Shari'a|Legge]] e della [[Islam|religione islamica]].<br />

La seconda edizione dell’della ''The Encyclopaedia of Islam'' ('''''EI''''' ²), articolata in 11 tomi e un Supplementosupplemento, è stata avviata nel [[1954]] ede è finitacompletata nel [[2005]]. È stata pubblicata dalla prestigiosa e antica casa editrice [[Paesi Bassi|olandese]] [[Brill Academic Publishers]] e per l’edizionel'edizione francese da G.-P. Maisonneuve & Larose di [[Parigi]], essendo disponibile infatti una versionerispettivamente in lingua inglese e una in lingua francese.
