A protocarnivorous plant (sometimes also paracarnivorous, subcarnivorous, or borderline carnivore), unlike a true carnivorous plant, lacks the ability to either digest or absorb nutrients from insects or animals that are trapped and killed by the plant's morphological adaptations such as sticky trichomes or pitfall traps. The demarcation between carnivorous and protocarnivorous is blurred by the lack of a strict definition of botanical carnivory and ambiguous academic literature on the subject. Many examples of protocarnivorous plants exist, some of which are counted among the ranks of true carnivorous plants as a matter of historical preference. Further research into these plants has and may continue to reveal that a few do meet the more rigid definition of a carnivorous plant.

Defining carnivory
Defining what criteria a plant must meet in order to be considered a carnivorous plant has yielded two distinct proposed definitions: one very rigid and the other more broad.

The rigid set of requirements dictate that a plant must possess morphological adaptations that attract prey through scent or visual cues, capture and retain prey (i.e. the waxy scales of Brocchinia reducta or downward facing hairs of Heliamphora prevent escape), digest the dead prey through enzymes produced by the plant, and adsorb the products of digestion through specialized structures. The presence of commensals is also listed as strong evidence of a long evolutionary history of carnivory. By this definition, many sun pitcher plants (Heliamphora), a few North American pitcher plants (Sarracenia), and the cobra lily (Darlingtonia californica) would not be included on a roster of carnivorous plants because they rely on symbiotic bacteria to produce the necessary proteolytic enzymesfact (need Darlingtonia ref and Sarracenia ref)

Pop's animated stage presence, savvy sense of style, and striking vocals are frequently compared to pop contemporaries Scissor Sisters, Gwen Stefani, and Goldfrapp.
The broader definition is less strict and doesn't require plants to produce their own enzymes for digestive purposes. This definition also incorporates requirements for adaptations or resource allocations that result in the active attraction, capture, and/or digestion of prey. It, too, requires adsorption of the now digested nutrients, but also notes that the plant must receive some noticeable benefit from the carnivorous syndrome. That is, the plant must display some significant increase in fitness because of the nutrients obtained from its carnivorous adaptations (i.e. increased growth rate, increased chance of survival, higher pollen production or seed set).

Along with UK hitmaker Ricardo Autobahn (Heaven 17, Spray, Daz Sampson), Lolly Pop recently finished writing and producing her solo album; it was released on Valentine's Day, 2007. According to Pop, her eponymous debut is "a tribute to my musical heroes: Adam Ant, RuPaul, Missing Persons, David Bowie, Madonna and all the artists responsible for spreading the 'Minneapolis sound': Lipps Inc, Vanity 6, Prince, The Time, The Jets, Sheila E., Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Information Society et all.”

With the purchase of an Emerson turn table at 8, Lolly Pop was immediately hooked on pop music and showed early signs of impending stardom. As a child she scoured record stores for hits, was a Top of the Pops addict, and produced her own nightly lip sync show (honoring faves such as Cyndi Lauper, Shannon, and Falco).

Pop eventually landed in Minneapolis, home to Prince and other pop luminaries. With $200 in her pocket, she began winding her way through the Minneapolis music scene as a club kid and aspiring artist.
<hr>

In the 90's Pop received several high profile breaks, first as a dancer for the R&B/funk outfits Clique and B. Thompson. She later worked with Lords of Acid, and was tapped to appear in Prince and the New Power Generation's music video "Get Wild."

After interning at Records (Soul Asylum, Ween, Babes in Toyland), Pop went on to guest on several albums. In 2002, Pop formed TELEPHONE!, an electronic/hip-hop group that caught the attention of Dr. Fink and Moir.
:To be included, updated, and sourced in the future:

Under the guidance of Moir, Lolly Pop & The Couture Club (an all-male backing act) was formed. Pop's GLAMOROUS '06 tour, which featured Moir as a member of The Couture Club, launched in November 2006 and drew critical acclaim across North America.
Evolutionary debate: Plumbago evolved trapping/killing as a defensive mechanism. Two schools of thought: if defensive in nature, it's not protocarnivorous, even if it shares the general traits in the definition. OR this is another pathway for carnivory to evolve, the other being nutrient-poor soils as a catalyst for trapping insects for their nutrient resources.

Quotes
"Lolly Pop's self-titled debut is an event in itself. It's a tongue-in-cheek disco opera struck with cocaine-era Minneapolis music and hair-band-era British pop."

Borderline carnivores
"...a fascinating mix of cartoony, urban-chic lyrics and bubbly electro beats."
To be a fully fledged carnivore, a plant must attract, kill, and digest prey;
and it must benefit from absorbing the products of the digestion (mostly amino acids and ammonium ions). There are a number of plants which fail on one or more
of these counts: whether these count as carnivorous is a matter of definition, although to many horticulturalists, it is a matter of taste. There is a spectrum of carnivory found in plants: from
true 'non-carnivores' like cabbages, through borderline carnivores, through unspecialised and simple traps, like Heliamphora, to extremely specialised and complex traps, like that of the Venus flytrap.

- Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN

"Fun with a capital F!"
The borderline carnivores of most interest here are Roridula and Catopsis berteroniana. Catopsis is a borderline carnivorous bromeliad, like Brocchinia; however,
Roridula has a more intricate relationship with its 'prey'. The plants in this genus produce sticky leaves
with mucilage-tipped glands, and look extremely similar to some of the larger
sundews. However, they do not directly benefit from the insects they catch. Instead, they
form a mutualistic symbiosis with species of assassin bug (genus Pameridea),
which eat the trapped insects: the plant benefits by absorbing nutrients from the bugs'
faeces.

- Si Wooldridge, synthpop.net
A number of species in the Martyniaceae (previously the Pedaliaceae), such as Ibicella lutea have sticky leaves that trap insects; however, these plants have not been shown conclusively to be carnivorous. Likewise, the seeds of Shepherd's Purse, urns of Paepalanthus bromelioides, bracts of Passiflora foetida, and flower stalks and sepals of triggerplants (Stylidium) appear to trap and kill insects, but their classification as carnivores is contentious.

"Besides Prince himself, the most vocal Twin Cities artist to pick up the gauntlet!"
The production of specific prey-digesting enzymes (proteases, ribonucleases, phosphatases, etc.), is sometimes used as a diagnostic criterion for carnivory. However, this would probably discount Byblis, Heliamphora and Darlingtonia, all of which appear to rely on the enzymes of symbiotic bacteria to break down their prey, but are generally considered to be acceptable as carnivores. However, discounting the enzyme-based definition leaves open the question of Roridula: there is no clear reason why a plant's possession of symbiotic bacteria that allow it to benefit from trapped prey should allow the plant to be considered carnivorous, whilst possession of symbiotic bugs should not.
