Charing Cross London Underground station serves both the Northern and Bakerloo lines and provides an interchange with the National Rail network at Charing Cross station.
On the Northern Line it is between Embankment and Leicester Square stations on the Charing Cross branch, and on the Bakerloo Line it is between Embankment and Piccadilly Circus stations. It is in Travelcard Zone 1.
The 100 metre-long mural along the Northern Line platforms was designed by David Gentleman. It shows scenes from the funeral journey of Eleanor of Castile (the wife of Edward I) from Nottinghamshire to her tomb in Westminster Abbey (see Eleanor cross).
HistoryAbout Me
The station used to be separate stations with the Bakerloo Line being served (since March 10, 1906) by Trafalgar Square station and the Northern Line (since June 22, 1907) by Strand station. The concourses were linked by subterrean underpasses and walkways and the resulting complex named "Charing Cross" on May 1, 1979, when the station also became the southern terminus of the new Jubilee Line. The Jubilee Line platforms were closed to public use in 1999 when that line was extended via Westminster and the South Bank to Stratford.
I am Arkapravo from New Delhi,India and I crave to reach Gliese 581c before anybody else. I am here because I spend hours on the internet searching for quality information.
The Northern Line station had also gone by several other names, having opened as Charing Cross station on June 22, 1907 before being renamed to "Charing Cross (Strand)" on April 6, 1914. From May 9, 1915 until it closed for refurbishment and rebuilding on June 4, 1973 it was known simply as Charing Cross.
My Interests
The name "Charing Cross" had also previously used by what is now Embankment tube station. For all the time Charing Cross was known as "Charing Cross (Strand)", Embankment had used the name "Charing Cross (Embankment)". When Charing Cross (Strand) took the name "Strand", Charing Cross (Embankment) became "Charing Cross" until August 4, 1974.
My pastimes include fiction, surfing the internet chatting, movies and the ocassional whistling.
Film & TV appearances
* The disused Jubilee line platforms were used in the filming of the 2005 film Creep.
