Anthony, in what way was [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Black_Order_%28James_Rollins%29&diff=98613677&oldid=98613635 this] appropriate? ==Industrial breathing sets category==
Hi, is the category for articles related to industrial breathing sets or just for makes (brand names) of industrial breathing sets? Of the 10 other articles in that category 5 of them aren't makes, and I'm unclear why [[mine rescue]] and [[Gas Control Equipment Ltd]] should be separated out from being alphabetized if the others are not. If we did separate everything that wasn't a make, that would leave only 5 of the 12 articles alphabetized. This isn't important to me one way or the other, I'm just curious and don't know of any Wikipedia style policies one way or the other. [[User:Dragomiloff|Dragomiloff]] 12:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
*Thanks for pointing this out. [[:Category:Rebreathers]] has 20 members which are types of rebreather and 5 which are not, and I separated them. [[User:Anthony Appleyard|Anthony Appleyard]] 18:00, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
::The peer review is here - [[Wikipedia:Peer review/Falklands War]]. I would say much of the article needs to be split off as it is, and it looked like a section it was possible with - 85KB when it was the peer review, but 94KB or so now. [[User:RHB|RHB]] 18:14, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
:The article was already becoming a focus of contention for more genralised naming issues, it also seems that we could do better in terms of splitting off a section, though personally I think 94KB is pretty small, anyway I see their is contention so I will reflect a bit before seeing if an afd would be appropraite. == [[New Zealand cricket seasons]] ==
For your information, the WikiProject Cricket is establishing a season review article for every first-class season worldwide. A summary of trophy winners is okay as a quick lookup but there is a need for detailed information per season. At present, we are concentrating on getting the articles in place and the best way to do that in a reasonable time is by creating "lookalike" stubs that can easily be copied and pasted; the next phase (which is already underway re England) is to expand the stubs and provide the details. The English seasons to 1787 are no longer stubs, we intend to enlarge all the others also but it will take several months to do it. --<b>[[User:BlackJack|BlackJack]] | <i>[[User talk:BlackJack|talk page]]</i></b> 10:10, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Dumper_workman_2of.jpg]]'''. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]], but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our [[Wikipedia:Fair use criteria|first fair use criterion]] in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

# Go to [[:Image:Dumper_workman_2of.jpg|the image description page]] and edit it to add <code><nowiki>{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}</nowiki></code>, '''without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template'''.
# On [[Image talk:Dumper_workman_2of.jpg|the image discussion page]], write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, [[Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission|requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license]], or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. == Pillar valves ==
That was why I added the disclaimer. Far be it from me to want to make the whole world pronouce fractured (and sometimes ugly) American English. But the reason I ask is that we always say PIE-lar here, accent on first syllable. Not like piler (like one who makes piles), or pillar (the support column). How do you say it in the UK? == Hi Anthony ==

I just noticed that you've created a list of places in Kreis Schleswig-Flensburg copied from a different Wikipedia. Please don't add links to other wikipedias directly in article space. If you wish to make lists of interwiki links, please do it on the talk page of the article in question. In some cases, this will mean that this wikipedia will only link to a non-existing (redlink) article, but this is how the system works. On the other hand, a redlink will make others notice that an article is missing here, and it will hopefully lead to its creation. Most of the readers of this website can't read either German or Danish anyway, so they have no use for any such links. I also noticed that you add links from article space to images on other websites. If you wish to include images here, you need to upload them images to either this Wikipedia or to Commons and add the correct image license. Alternatively, you can make a link to them under the "external links" section or you can link to such material from the article's talk page. However, in actual article space, we're only allowed to use images on Wikipedia's own servers. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Happy editing. == -lev ==

-lev is a very old and common ending in Danish placenames. It is at least 1,000 years old. The first syllable is normally but not always a man's name and -lev is derived from the verb "leve" which means to "live". E.g. Haderslev = "where Hathar lives", Marslev = "where Mar lives" (in both cases, the "S" is a genitive). Hartlev = "where life is tough" (in German, this name would have been "Hartleben"), Haslev = "where hazel grows" (Hassel = hazel). == Schleswig ==

It will take a little time but I'll try to look for answers to your questions, but I can start with those that I know of for sure:

- Mysunde. Mysunde is located on the north side of [[Schwansen]], near a very narrow part of the Schlei. Any army wishing to outflank the Dannevirke would have to cross the Schlei here. Outflanking it to the west would not be possible under normal conditions since the area between Husum and the western extremity of the Dannevirke was marsh land which was flooded in times of war. Mysunde is located on the road between Kosel and Brodersby. See [http://www.milhist.dk/1864/mysunde64/mysunde64.htm]. It is located in the north-western part of Kosel municipality, see a ___location map of the municipality at [[:de:Kosel]]. If you read German, there is a bit more information here: [http://www.amt-schlei.de/], click "Die Gemeinden" and click "Kosel". The same ___location was the scene of battles during several wars.

- Railways. The Danish railway network was still in its infancy in 1864. North of the Kongeå, only a rail link between Copenhagen and Korsør existed as well as a railway from Århus leading to the north west. Had the Dannevirke been held, potential reinforcements from Copenhagen would have been transported by rail to Korsør and sailed the rest of the way to Flensburg. Such an operation would take a maximum of 2-3 days. The railway network in the duchies was much better: railways linked Hamburg, Kiel, Altona and the city of Schleswig. Less than 10 years before the war, railways opened from Eiderstedt and Husum to the city of Schleswig and from Schleswig to Flensburg. The duchies had no railways north of this point. More interesting is that the railway was never properly used during the evacuation of the Dannevirke with the result that great amounts of artillery, most importantly heavy artillery, were left behind by the Danish army. One explanation is that this was done so the Prussian army wouldn't notice the retreat. A more popular story claims that a waiting train had been instructed to head north at a specific time, which it did, but that the army had not yet arrived to the station due to heavy snow. The equipment transported to Dybbøl was essentially pulled there by soldiers and horses during very poor conditions, as the weather had changed to a snow storm. An iconic image exists of this retreat, and I'll upload a copy one of the days. The city of Schleswig, Flensburg, Sønderborg and Dybbøl were all connected by a road paved with crushed rock and this was the route the army took. The same road continued from Flensburg to Fredericia and Århus and this was the route later taken by the Prussian army when it invaded Jutland. The Dannevirke was abandoned at the orders of the commander, Christian de Meza, who feared that the poorly-repaired fortress couldn't hold out against a bigger foe. Even more so as the Schlei and the wetlands west of the Dannevirke were freezing. His calculations might have been correct, but the decision was not popular, and it is still considered almost a miracle that the army wasn't destroyed when the weather changed for the worse so the army had to march most of the way through a snowstorm. Except for the artillery, it arrived almost in one piece at Dybbøl. [[User:Valentinian|Valentinian]] [[User_talk:Valentinian|(talk)]] / [[Special:Contributions/Valentinian|(contribs)]] 13:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

:Hi Anthony. Unfortunately I can't find any really good sources regarding your questions about Arnæs and the thaw of 1864. As I remember the story, thaw came soon after the army's withdrawal to Dybbøl, but I haven't a good source at hand. Sorry. Around 600 men were caught or killed in action during the retreat and 10 men died of freezing. A number of Schleswigers left the army during the withdrawal, but according to one soldier, most of these returned in less than a day. Recently, there have been problems with an [[Special:Contributions/70.133.71.150|anonymous editor]] adding sometimes spurious, sometimes POV and counterfactual information to articles on Old Prussia, and I decided to examine the his other edits to see if he was making similar edits to other articles; in doing so, I noticed that he took the entry [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sprevjane&diff=104392206&oldid=19765367 Sprevjane] and moved it to [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sprewanen&diff=104392564&oldid=19765389 Sprewanen]. As you recently edited the Sprevjane article, I thought I'd give you a heads up. The edit may reflect a German POV on the part of the contributor, who also added unreferenced etymological information (most likely folk etymology) linking Spevjane to Spree-wohner. You may wish to move the article back, or simply cite/clean up the etymological information. ---- [[User:Beobach972|Beobach972]] 01:56, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Again, I have removed several of your changes, this time to [[Primary Life Support System]]. Firstly, according to the manual of style, prose is preferable to lists where possible. In addition, you removed important text and made the quality of the writing frankly poorer. I really recommend that you take some time to carefully look over the [[WP:MOS|manual of style]] and its subpages, and read [[Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles]] before arbitrarily changing articles around for the worse. Not only have I had to correct numerous innaccuracies, wording problems, and style deviations from you on several articles, but I have read several complaints about your editing style from other editors. If you want to contibute ''helpfully'' to the project, you should consider taking this as constructive criticism, read over the relevant policies, and try to edit more carefully and deliberatively in the future. — [[User:Swpb|Swpb]] ''[[User talk:Swpb|talk]] [[Special:contributions/Swpb|contribs]]'' 18:19, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

==Gas chamber==
Hello.

I can't understand or believe that you would call my adding fact tags to the [[gas chamber|Gas Chamber]] article a type of holocaust denial. I find this very offensive. I add fact tags to many articles, and nobody has ever tried to skirt WP:CITE in such an irresponsible and childish way.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but you don't just throw around an accusation like that, especially when someone is going through pages trying to help by adding fact tags where appropriate and the article is in flagrant violation of WP:CITE.

I didn't consider that these fact tags could construed as controversial, and I was not thinking of them in the context of the holocaust denial debate. I was simply adding tags where settled policy says they belong.

I don't know if you are actively involved in the holocaust history issue - it's not a main area of study for me. If you are, I would suggest that you take a more reasonable approach when dealing with people, like myself, who have not looked into the issue. While I know enough about the documentation and study of the holocaust to know that it obviously occurred, I am startled by the level of aggression you have displayed in this instance and I fear it may provide ammunition for the very people whose deceits you seek to mitigate or eliminate from WikiPedia.

Good day. [[User:RadicalHarmony|RadicalHarmony]] 22:55, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

*I was not calling this <nowiki>{{fact}}</nowiki> comment a type of holocaust denial. My edit comment "''(rv ... a totally unnecessary "<nowiki>{{fact}}</nowiki>" tag.)''" merely meant that so many people know about the Holocaust that surely a reference is not needed. Simiarly with "''(rv deletion of a sentence that I put in to counter Holocaust-denial-type queries)''". As it is, I have put in a link to [[Yad Vashem]]'s web site as a fact link. AA, do you have any references for "[[pah]]" as an alternate spelling for "pā"? I was cleaning up the mess of two disambiguation pages for "PAH" [with and without the (disambiguation)], when we edit-collided. I put your addition in an invisible comment, for now. The Pā (Māori) article shows "pa" as an alternate spelling, but not "pah". It seems to me that the article itself should list all valid spellings (and even common invalid spellings). ==License tagging for Image:Aa gully emptier 01 rear end.jpg==
Thanks for uploading [[:Image:Aa gully emptier 01 rear end.jpg]]. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|image tag]] applied to the [[Wikipedia:Image description page|image description page]] indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

== Dumpers ==
*AA, I seem to have reverted your reversion to the disambiguation page. I had forgotten that I had already changed it once. However I think there is a difference between simplification and 'dumbing down', and my initial changes were not made without thought. I would suggest: up to 10 tonnes is not that 'small'; 'one-man' is irrelevant to a disambiguation page entry, which needs to be give as brief a description as will suffice for the purpose of disambiguation; not all dumpers are diesel powered and anyway that is also unnecessary detail; and the final 'around' is also superfluous and not, if I may be so bold, terribly good English. In so far as it may be relevant, I happen to have 40 years experience of construction plant. [[User:Bill Ferguson|Bill F]] 23:42, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
*
::"''up to 10 tonnes is not that 'small'"'': vehicles called "[[dumper]]s" (rather than "[[dump truck]]s") that I have seen here in England do not go up to the 10-ton range.
::"''not all dumpers are diesel powered''": OK, I have inserted "usually".
::"''one-man''" eliminates vehicles designed to carry one or more passengers.
::"''off-road vehicle designed for carrying bulk material''" in my opinion is by itself not specific enough.
::"''I happen to have 40 years experience of construction plant''": which country in? We again seem to have run into UK/USA differences in word meanings and in work practices. I am in England.
[[User:Anthony Appleyard|Anthony Appleyard]] 07:29, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

:"''10 tonne''": You have not been looking hard enough. Please see the Thwaites [[http://www.thwaitesdumpers.co.uk/ad10tonne.php]] website, to which the main article refers.
: On the next two points, the question is whether this level of detail is needed to distinguish this usage of 'dumper' from all the other usages of the word, not whether it is necessary to a complete dictionary definition. I refer you to [[Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(disambiguation_pages)#Individual_entries]] See the penultimate bullet point before section 5.1.

Hi Anthony, I didn't delete your summary points of the 3rd season thus far....not sure if someone did, based on your comment? In any case, while I agree that other news sites and websites may have reported on some of these things, people may be coming to Wikipedia as a resource, so to be fair, information about unseen episodes should be between spoiler tags - and right now, the article does indeed have spoiler tags. == Whips and crops ==
I'll go over to the article and try to clarify what I wrote. I don't think it's a USA vs UK thing so much as a riding discipline thing: In the US, a "crop" is usually used for what we call [[Hunt seat]] riding and [[show jumping]]. It is short (under 24" in some cases), fairly stiff, and has a little popper on the end. A similar tool is used by jockeys in [[horse racing]] where the words "[[crop]]", "[[whip]]" and "[[bat]]" are used interchangably for the same item, possibly a regional variation there. [[Rodeo]] people call their crops a "bat." A "whip" is longer, what may be seen in [[Dressage]] or [[Saddle seat]] riding, up to 43" in dressage, longer in other disciplines. It also probably isn't all that cosmically important! ;-) [[User:Montanabw|Montanabw]] 07:11, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I do think "bat" as a word interchangable with "crop" is possibly an American thing; we too normally consider a "bat" the wooden stick used in baseball or cricket! <grin> But then, most people think a "crop" is somethig that you grow in the ground for food, too! But basically, in the world of horse whips, think of a crop as a short whip or about 24 inches, or think of a whip as a slightly longer, more flexible crop, whatever floats your boat...everyone says "dressage whip," for example, referring to the riding whip that is no more than 43 inches long; no one says "dressage crop." Hope that clarifies things, sort of... [[User:Montanabw|Montanabw]] 07:42, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

==Alloy and Alloyer==
Anthony, technically your example would be correct, if pure niobium were added to steel, since niobium is a pure element, and an alloy (noun) is "a metal that is a combination of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal.", you would be adding an element to the molten metal. In a practical usage one would not add niobium to steel in a ladle because the melting point is so high for niobium that the tapping temperature of steel would not be great enough to create the new alloy (i.e. niobium containing steel). One would use ferroniobium. Ironically in actuality the steel itself is an alloy so the niobium addition you describe would be adding another element to an alloy to create a new alloy.

In my metallurgical foundry background I tried to think of an example where a pure metal, or element, might be added to a molten metal. The one that comes to mind is adding copper (say 99.9% pure) to ductile iron or gray iron (both of which, like steel, are alloys themselves). In practice we would say "add copper to that ladle" but we would not say "add copper alloy" to that ladle. On the other hand, if one wanted to add chromium to the same ladle we would use ferrochromium (which is an alloy) but we might say either "add chrome to that ladle" or "add ferrochrome to that ladle". I have seen and heard the term "add alloy(s) to the ladle" but I have not ever seen or heard "add alloyer to the ladle". It looked unusual to me. However, my experience is in America only so if that expression is more common in other english speaking areas of the world let me know because I would be interested in learning that. I see you have moved [[The Fall]] to [[The Fall (band)]] and created a disambiguation page. I assume that this was based on the discussion at [[Talk:The Fall (novel)]]. Could I trouble you to formally close the discussion? I cannot do it myself because I participated in the discussion, so I am not impartial. --[[User:Stemonitis|Stemonitis]] 09:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

:::I don't understand. Someone proposed moving The Fall (novel) to the The Fall, which was opposed. Some else then suggested moving The Fall to The Fall (band) and having a disambig page at The Fall. == Re: School vandalism, broken redirects ==

In the case of the school where most of its edits have been vandalism, if there's a decent sized block log, then it can actually be blocked for 6 months so ong as the schoolblock template is used, as evident here:
(status) 11:13, April 20, 2007 WJBscribe (Talk | contribs | block) blocked "152.53.14.162 (contribs)" (anon. only, account creation blocked) with an expiry time of 6 months <nowiki>({{schoolblock}})</nowiki> (Unblock)
As for the broken redirects, I've never actually experienced them before so your guess is as good as mine. I'd say that if there's a proper page to redirect it to then have it redirect there, otherwise either delete the redirect or delete the page if that was its only use.--[[User:Wizardman|<span style="color:#0F0;background:#006">Wizardman</span>]] 17:43, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. I made a mistake, which I apologize for. Next time you do warn someone about this, could you take a quick look at their contributions rather than treating them as a newbie straight off? ==taxonomy stubs==
Anthony, for plant subfamilies and other intermediate group, I think the usual practice is that the stubs can remain indefinitely, because they function as placeholders while additional work is being done of the individual genera or species. I therefore removed your prod. I cannot tell if you meant to place an AfD, so I removed the partial template. If you did mean to place it, I apologize; just do so again, but it might help if you checked the nature of other similar articles first.

== Re: Dispute between you andParthianShot ==

Hello. I think you meant "mediation" instead of "arbitration". Whatever it may be, I do not think this is really a dispute and I don't see any mediation required. This is a clear issue of copyright violation. There are atleast 2 administrators other than me who agree that the external website is violating copyrights and hence material taken from that website(like images) may also be copyvios. I am in the midst of exams right now, and hence do not have time to pursue the issue. I will do so only after 5th May. - [[User:Aksi_great|Aksi_great]] ([[User_talk:Aksi_great|talk]]) 06:03, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello :) Please see the talk page of the above article and consider removing the <nowiki>{{hangon}}</nowiki> from the main page? I'm not trying to mount a campaign against Kuwaiti companies or anything, but after reviewing a few of the articles, many appear to have been set up in a hurry with copyvio content, which leads me to believe there's some spamvertising going on in the genre.

Best wishes,

Hi Anthony,

Just for your information, the reason I tagged the above article as nonsense is that is a direct copy and paste from [[Wayne Rooney]] with the author's ([[User:Liamflaherty12]]) name appended to the front. I am fairly confident the article will be deleted by an administrator shortly. Cheers,[[User:Mattinbgn|Mattinbgn]]/ [[User talk:Mattinbgn|talk]] 23:07, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I wanted to say that you were right to revert my speedy tag on this image. I got going tagging everything this kid posted, and did not check to see that this was actually being used legitimately. That's the problem with new articles/recent changes patrolling: you can get off on a tear, and not realize some edits are actually legit. Anyway, thanks for catching that. Some of its versions quote a UK [[registered charity]] number 1113995. Is there any point chasing that number up to see if that charity is what it claims to be?
All 3 of its reincarnations were created by [[User:CharlotteBoseley]]. [[User talk:CharlotteBoseley]] says at 18:18, 23 April 2007 that someone blocked her for 24 hours.
*: The usual way to protect a file against re-creation is to give it some short dummy content and then fully protect it. Perhaps do that if it is recreated again. [[User:Anthony Appleyard|Anthony Appleyard]] 21:59, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
