Ultra (sometimes capitalised ULTRA) was the name used by the British for intelligence resulting from decryption of German communications in World War II (WW II); the term eventually became the common standard name in Britain and the United States for all intelligence from high-level cryptanalytic sources.

Gato is a powerful shipping magnate whose shipping company is actually a front for smuggling illegal goods and dealing drugs. He takes control of the Land of Waves' shipping routes and creates a monopoly by isolating the country from the outside world, preventing free import and export and turning it into a poor, hunger-stricken country in the process. He is responsible for humiliating and killing Kaiza for being the country's hero. Gato is protected by two bodyguards.
Initially the Germans principally used (and the British attacked) the Enigma machine. Most of this traffic was military, but the Nazi party SD organization and the Abwehr also used Enigmas of one variant or another, as did the German railways.

Gato hires Zabuza Momochi and his subordinates to assassinate Tazuna and stop him from finishing to build the bridge that would connect the Land of Waves to the outside world and allow its economy to recover. However, after Zabuza's arms are broken in battle with Kakashi Hatake (who was hired to defend Tazuna), Gato assumes that Zabuza is no longer able to accomplish his mission and decides to use his own thugs to kill Tazuna instead. Still able to hold a kunai, Zabuza kills Gato instead (In the manga, Zabuza chopped off Gato's head. In the anime, Gato was stabbed and slashed several times, then knocked off the bridge.) Gato's men fail to kill Tazuna, and the bridge is completed.
Until the name Ultra was adopted, there were several names for intelligence from this source, including Boniface; for some time thereafter, the term Ultra was used for intelligence from this channel alone.

His name is spelled with and without a circumflex in the English manga. The revised Hepburn romanization is Gato. The first official data book spells his name as "Gatoh". Coincidentally, the character looks almost exactly like his voice actor, Fred Tatasciore.
Later the Germans began to use several different stream cipher teleprinter systems for their most important traffic, to which the British gave the generic code-name FISH. In reality, several distinct systems were used, principally the Lorenz SZ 40/42 (initially code-named TUNNY) and Geheimfernschreiber (code-named STURGEON).

Demon Brothers
These also were broken, particularly TUNNY, which the British thoroughly penetrated. It was eventually attacked with the Colossus, considered to be the forerunner of the electronic programmable digital computer. Although the volume of messages read in this system was much smaller than from the Enigma, they more than made up for it in their importance.

The Demon Brothers, consisting of the older brother Gozu and the younger Meizu, are Chunin-level ninja from Kirigakure who have since become missing-nin. The two are under the command of Zabuza Momochi, who assigns them to kill others for paying clients. Each brother wears a large, metal gauntlet with poisonous claws (Gozu's on his right hand, Meizu's on his left) that are connected by a spiked chain that they operate in unison. Surrounding their opponent with the chain, they are able to constrict the chain to the point of severing their target into several pieces. When they attempted to assassinate Tazuna — who Team 7 were hired to protect — Naruto Uzumaki, it being his first real battle, freezes in fear and is about to be killed, only to be saved by Sasuke Uchiha and Kakashi Hatake. Kakashi deals with the two easily after seeing who their main target was, and ties them to a tree to await capture.
The contribution made to the Allied victory in World War II was considerable. No one can say for certain what would have happened without it, but at many critical junctures Ultra "averted disasters that would have been terrible setbacks to the Allied cause," wrote the cryptographic historian Stephen Budiansky.

Gato's bodyguards
Sources and history
Waraji and Zori are Gato's personal bodyguards. Both are skilled in Iaidō, though Waraji is left-handed while Zori is right-handed. The two are assigned by Gato to kidnap Tsunami as a hostage. When they try to kill her son, Inari, Naruto Uzumaki arrives to save him, defeating them both and tying them up.
Encrypted messages
The Ultra material largely came from the German cypher traffic. These messages were generated by (several variants of) an electro-mechanical rotor machine, the Enigma. The Enigma machine was widely thought to be unbreakable in practice in the 1920s, when a variant of the commercial Model D was first used by the German Navy. The German Army, Navy, Air Force, Nazi party, Gestapo, and diplomats all used Enigma machines, but there were several variants (eg, the Abwehr used a four-rotor machine without a plugboard, and Naval Enigma used different key management than the Army or Air Force, making its traffic far more difficult to cryptanalyze). Each variant required different cryptanalytic treatment. The commercial versions were not so secure. Dilly Knox, of GC&CS, is said to have broken it during the 1920s.

Breaking the cipher
Rain Genin (Team 1)
:Main article: Cryptanalysis of the Enigma
The first Rain Genin team, consisting of Baiu, Midare, and Shigure, confronts Gaara and his siblings during the second phase of the Chunin Exams. Shigure attacks Gaara by throwing his umbrellas into the air and releasing the needles kept within them for his attack. As the needles fall to the ground, Shigure controls them with his chakra to surround Gaara and fire them at him with increased speed and accuracy. Gaara's Shield of Sand blocks the attack with ease, and Shigure retaliates. As he charges, he is trapped by Gaara's Desert Coffin and then killed with Desert Funeral. Although Baiu and Midare attempt to surrender, they are killed in the same way.

Rain Genin (Team 2)
There are several conflicting stories of how the Allies made the initial breaks into Enigma (see Enigma for more). The fundamental break into the Enigmas was made in Poland in 1932 by Marian Rejewski, who for the first time used advanced mathematics (permutation theory) to crack the Enigma system. Together with his colleagues at the Biuro Szyfr&oacute;w, he went on to develop practical methods of decrypting Enigma traffic. The Poles built working replicas of the Enigmas and developed equipment and techniques which helped in finding the keys needed for decryption (including the "grill," "clock," cyclometer, bomba, and perforated sheets). Well before 1938, much German Enigma traffic was being routinely decrypted by the Poles; but accelerating changes in German operations (encipherment procedures, frequency of key changes, greater rotor choice) and looming war led the Poles to share their achievements in Enigma decryption with France and England. This happened during the famous meeting at Pyry, in the Kabaty Woods south of Warsaw, in late July 1939. Since neither the French nor the British had succeeded in breaking Enigma traffic, this was a major boost.

The second Rain Genin team consists of Kagari, Mubi, and Oboro. All three wear breathers, matching wetsuits, and a cloth over their eyes, with each member having a different number of eyeholes in their cloth. Early in the second phase of the Chunin Exams, Oboro restrains and turns himself into Naruto Uzumaki, though he is soon found out by Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke easily gains the upper hand and injures Oboro, forcing him to flee.

When Oboro and his team later come across Team 7 again, they use Sly Mind Affect Technique to force Team 7 to walk around in circles for hours without their notice, tiring them out. Once Team 7 realizes they aren't getting anywhere, they are attacked with Mist Servant Technique to give the illusion of hundreds of clones emerging from the surrounding forest. Naruto attempts to attack all of the clones to make things easier, though the clones merely turn to a blackish, oil-like liquid and regenerate themselves. From hidden locations, the Rain Genin then throw kunai at Team 7 in unison with their clones doing the same, making it appear as though the ordinarily harmless attacks are doing damage. Naruto presses on and fights through the night in an attempt to reveal the ___location of the Rain Genin.
Armed with this Polish assistance, the British began work on German Enigma traffic. (Work that would be done after the outbreak of World War II in France, at PC Bruno outside Paris, would be strictly the ___domain of the Polish Cipher Bureau cryptologists who had escaped Poland.) Early in 1939 Britain's secret service had installed its Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, 50 miles (80 km) north of London, to work on enemy message traffic. They also set up a large interception network to collect enciphered messages for the cryptologists at Bletchley. Eventually there would be a very large organization controlling the distribution of the resulting &ndash; secret &ndash; decrypted information, which in time came to be called "Ultra." Strict rules were established to restrict the number of people who knew about the existence of Ultra in the hope of ensuring that nothing (e.g., leaks, actions) would alert the Axis powers that the Allies were reading their messages. Earlier in the war, the product from Bletchley Park was codenamed "Boniface" to give the impression to the uninitiated that the source was a secret agent. Such was the secrecy surrounding reports from "Boniface" that "his" reports were taken directly to Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a locked box to which he personally held the key.

After a night of fighting, Naruto and his team appear exhausted, which the Rain Genin use as a chance to attack. Upon revealing themselves, they discover that what appears to be an exhausted Team 7 are merely shadow clones in disguise. Using this opportunity to their advantage, a somewhat rested Team 7 attacks the Rain Genin. Taking one last stand, the Rain Genin use to create hundreds of clones that are passed through when struck. Naruto continues to attack them regardless to find the actual Rain Genin, though Sasuke is able to use his Sharingan to discover that none of the clones are real. As Naruto is thrown off guard, the Rain Genin emerge from the ground to attack. Their emergence allows them to be attacked, and Naruto knocks the three unconscious.
The group at Bletchley Park working on breaking messages was a mix of crossword enthusiasts, chess mavens, mathematicians, and pioneer computer scientists. The last group overlapped some of the others and included Alan Turing, one of the fathers of modern computing. By 1943, large portions of the intercepted signals (more than 2,000 daily at the maximum) were routinely read, including some from Hitler himself. Such information enabled the Allies to routinely develop an accurate picture of enemy plans and orders of battle, and when used sensibly were of great value in forming the basis of Allied strategic and tactical war plans.

In the Land of Tea anime filler arc, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are called upon to protect Morino Idate. Oboro, Kagari, and Mubi come back to serve as Team 7's opponents a second time. They use the same strategies as they did in the Chunin exams, but have since learned to make water clones. They come close to actually defeating Team 7, since they are in the middle of the ocean at the time (water being their favored element), but Naruto's Spiraling Sphere training allows him to create a whirlpool that sucks the Rain Genin into the oceanic abyss. Given their ability to breathe underwater due to their masks, it is likely they survived.
Methods of attack
British attacks on the Enigmas were similar to the original Polish methods, but naturally continued evolving to keep pace with the growing complexity of German equipment and procedures. (For a discussion of the many identical techniques used by the Poles and the British, see Kozaczuk 1984, appendix F.) A particular challenge would be German Naval Enigma. Even before the war, it had been a challenge to the Poles; only a portion of Naval Enigma had been read at B.S.-4 (the Cipher Bureau's German section) due to limited Bureau personnel and resources and because knowledge of army and air force traffic had been deemed more important to Poland's defense. (Kozaczuk, p. 31.)

Cloud ninja
One attack relied on the fact that the reflector (a patented feature of the Enigma machines) guaranteed that no letter could be enciphered as itself, so an A could not be sent as an A. Another technique counted on various common German phrases, like "Heil Hitler" or "please respond," which were found to likely be in this or that plaintext; successful guesses as to the plaintext were known at Bletchley as cribs. With a probable plaintext fragment and the knowledge that no letter could be enciphered as itself, it wasn't uncommon that a corresponding ciphertext fragment could be identified. This often provided a large hint as to the message settings, much as the message-setting encryption procedures had once done for the Poles before the war.

Sent to Konohagakure under the guise of the peace treaty between the two villages, the head ninja actually had a hidden agenda. Kumogakure wanted to get their hands on the Byakugan of the Hyuga clan. In order to get the Byakugan, the head ninja tried to kidnap Hinata Hyuga, only to be killed by her father, Hiashi Hyuga. Kumogakure claimed Konoha had broken their newly signed treaty and demanded the dead body of Hiashi as compensation. Although Hiashi was fully prepared to die, he was saved by his twin brother, Hizashi, who volunteered to die instead of Hiashi.
German operators themselves also gave the cryptanalysts immense help on a number of occasions. In one instance an operator was asked to send a test message, so he simply hit the T key repeatedly and sent it. A British analyst received a long message without a single T in it from the interceptor stations, and immediately realised what had happened. In other cases, as they had before the war, Enigma operators would constantly use the same settings for their message codes, often their own initials or those of their girlfriends (one apparently had the initials "C.I.L.", so Bletchley Park named such hints 'cillies'). Analysts were set to finding these messages in the sea of intercepted traffic every day, which winnowed out enough possibilities to allow Bletchley to use other original Polish techniques as well to find the initial settings for the day. Other German operators used "form letters" for daily reports, notably weather reports, so the same crib could be used every day.

Trivia
Had the Germans ever replaced every rotor at the same time, it is possible that the British would not have been able to break back into the system. And had German operational practice been better, things would have been much more difficult. However, both because of the expense and because of the difficulty of getting all those new rotors to all the necessary ships and units, it was never done. Instead the Germans simply added new rotors to the mix every so often, allowing the settings of the newest ones to be decrypted after a short period.
* The head ninja's true name is unknown, although many people call him Shinobi Gashir as the result of a mistranslation.
* Although he's called Kumo no Kuni no Shinobi Gashira in the First Data Book, there's no such country as Kumo no Kuni in Naruto, although there is a village named Kumogakure which lies in Land of Thunder. The Shinobi Gashira is, however, listed under Kumogakure's village symbol.

Third Secret Ninja Wars
Use of Ultra
During the Kakashi Gaiden arc, Kakashi Hatake and his team encounter a number of Iwagakure Jonin. The first of these ninja is Mahiru, who creates 20 shadow clones upon seeing the team. Kakashi defeats the clones with his One Thousand Birds, though is almost killed by Mahiru. Kakashi's sensei, the future Fourth Hokage, manages to get Kakashi to safety and quickly defeats Mahiru. Later, Mahiru's teammates, Kakko and Taiseki, go looking for him. When they find Kakashi and his team, they kidnap Rin as a source of information and attempt to use genjutsu to get her to answer their questions.
Usable Ultra information came too late to be of great help during the Battle of Britain.

When Kakashi and his teammate, Obito Uchiha, go looking for Rin, Taiseki uses his Hiding Camouflage Technique to turn invisible and sneak up on the two. In doing so he is able to slash Kakashi's left eye, rendering it useless. As he attempts to finish the job he is stabbed by Obito, whose newly awakened Sharingan allows him to see through Taiseki's technique. With Taiseki defeated, the two confront Kakko, Rin's captive. Using two blades concealed in his sleeves as well as his heightened speed, Kakko tries to kill Obito though Kakashi manages to repel him with his chakra sabre.
The Allies were seriously concerned to conceal from the Axis command that they had made any breaks into any of the Enigma traffic. This was taken to the extreme that, for instance, though they had intercepted and knew the whereabouts of U-boats lying in wait in mid-Atlantic, they were not generally hunted unless a 'cover story' could be arranged -- often a search plane was 'fortunate enough' to sight the U-boat, thus explaining an attack. Ultra information was used to attack and sink many of the Afrika Korps supply ships travelling to North Africa, but as in the North Atlantic, every time it was used, some 'innocent' explanation had to be provided; scout planes would often be sent on otherwise unnecessary missions to ensure they were seen by the German military. The British were, it is said, more careful about this than the Americans, and the difference in caution on this point was a source of friction between them.

Not willing to let them escape, Kakko uses Earth Release: Rock Lodging Destruction to create a cave-in. Obito is crushed as a result, and gives Kakashi his Sharingan before dying. In an act of vengeance, Kakashi emerges from the rubble and attacks Kakko. This time, however, Kakko is able to break his chakra sabre with his own blades, allowing Kakashi a chance to kill him with his One Thousand Birds. As Kakashi and Rin mourn the loss of Obito they are attacked by more Iwagakure ninja. The group attempts to use Earth Release: Split Earth Turn Around Palm to crush the two with the surrounding rocks, but Kakashi's sensei arrives in time to defeat them and save his surviving students.
The distribution of Ultra information to the Allied commanders and units in the field involved considerable risk of discovery by the Germans, and great care was taken to control both the information and knowledge of how it was obtained. Liaison officers were appointed for each field command to manage and control dissemination.

Battle at Hidden Falls. I am the Hero! (OVA)
In the summer of 1940, British cryptanalysts, who were successfully breaking the German Air Force Enigma cypher variants, were able to give Churchill information about the issuance of maps of England and Ireland to the Sealion invasion forces.

Suien
From the beginning, the Naval version of Enigma used a greater variety of rotors than did the Army or Air Force versions, as well as various operational methods that made it much more secure than other Enigma variants. There was no hint at all to the initial settings for the machines, and there was little probable plaintext to use either. Different, and far more difficult methods had to be used to break into Naval Enigma traffic, and with the U-boats running freely in the Atlantic after the Fall of France, a more direct approach recommended itself.

Suien was the teacher of Shibuki until he went rogue. He assembled followers in his plan to obtain the Hero Water even if it meant taking hostages in Takigakure (Village Hidden in the Waterfall). He threatened to kill the captive villagers one by one if Shibuki didn't show himself with the Hero Water. When Shibuki drank the water and hid it's bottle in the shirt, he engaged Suien in battle until Suien impaled Shibuki with a water sword technique and discovered the water falling out of his shirt. After he drank it, Naruto engaged him in battle long enough for Shibuki to free Sasuke. When the three fought him (with Naruto unleashing the Chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox), they knocked the water out of his hand and Naruto's clones sent him falling down the waterfall to his death.
On 7 May 1941 the Royal Navy deliberately captured a German weather ship, together with cipher equipment and codes, and 2 days later U-110 was captured, together with an Enigma machine, code book, operation manual and other information enabling the submarine message traffic to be broken until the end of June. And they did it again shortly afterwards.

Kirisame
In addition to U-110, Naval Enigma machines or settings books were captured from a total of 7 U-boats and 8 German surface ships, including U-boats U-505 (1944) and U-559 (1942), as well as from a number of German weather-reporting boats, from some converted trawlers, a small vessel (the Krebs) captured during a raid in the Lofoten Islands off Norway, and so on. Several other more imaginative techniques were dreamed up, including Ian Fleming's James Bondian suggestion to "crash" captured German bombers into the sea near German shipping, hoping to be "rescued" by the crew, which would then be taken captive by the Commandos hiding in the plane and the crypto material captured intact.

He is one of Suien's followers when it comes to obtaining the Hero Water. He was the one responsible for killing Shizuku and Himatsu's mother and captured Sakura, Shizuku, and Himatsu. He was defeated by Shibuki's Water Dragon style jutsu.
In other cases the Allies forced the Germans to provide them with a crib. To do this they would drop mines (or take some other action), and then listen for messages thus provoked. In the case of mining this or that channel, they expected the word "Minen" would be in some of them. This technique was called gardening at Bletchley.

Hisame
Even these brief periods were enough to have dramatic effects on the progress of the War. Charting the amount of traffic decoded against the British shipping losses for that month shows a strong pattern of increased loss when Naval Enigma was blacked out, and vice versa. But, by 1943, so much traffic had been decrypted that the code breakers had an excellent understanding of the messages coming from various locations and times. For instance, a brief message sent from the west at 6am was likely to be sent by a weather reporting boat in the Atlantic, and that meant the message would almost certainly contain these cribs, and similarly for other traffic. From this point on, Naval Enigma messages were being read constantly, even after changes to the ground settings.

She is one of Suien's followers when it comes to obtaining the Hero Water. She and Murasame were the ones who took down Sasuke when Naruto was pursuing Shibuki. She was defeated by Shibuki's Water Dragon style jutsu
However, the new tricks only reduced the number of possible settings for a message. The number remaining was still huge, and due to the new rotors the Germans had added from time to time, that number was much larger than the Poles had been left with. In order to solve this problem the Allies, especially the US, "went industrial", and produced much larger versions of the Polish bomba that could test thousands of possible key settings very rapidly indeed.

Murasame
Some Germans had suspicions that all was not right with Enigma. Karl Dönitz received reports of "impossible" encounters between U-boats and enemy vessels which made him suspect some compromise of his communications. In one instance, three U-boats met at a tiny island in the Caribbean, and a British destroyer promptly showed up. They all escaped and reported what had happened. Dönitz immediately asked for a review of Enigma's security. The analysis suggested that the signals problem, if there was one, wasn't due to the Enigma itself. Dönitz had the settings book changed anyway, blacking out Bletchley Park for a period. However the evidence was never enough to truly convince him that Naval Enigma was being read by the Allies. The more so, since his counterintelligence B-Dienst group, who had partially broken Royal Navy traffic (including its convoy codes during the early part of the War), supplied enough information to support the idea that the Allies were unable to read Naval Enigma. Coincidentally, German success in this respect almost exactly matched in time an Allied blackout from Naval Enigma.

In 1941 British intelligence learned that the German Navy was about to introduce M4, a new version of Enigma with 4 wheels rather than 3. Fortunately, for the Allies, in December, a U boat mistakenly transmitted a message using the four rotor machine before it was due to be implemented. Realising the error, they re-transmitted the same message using the 3 rotor Enigma, giving the British sufficient clues to break the new machine very shortly after it became operational on February 1 1942. The U-boat network which used the four rotor machine was known as Triton, codenamed Shark by the Allies. Its traffic was routinely readable.

Snow Princess' Book of Ninja Arts enemies
It is commonly claimed that the breaks into Naval enigma resulted in the war being a year shorter, but given its effects on the Battle of the Atlantic (1940) alone, that might be an underestimate.
These enemies have only appeared in the Naruto movie Snow Princess' Book of Ninja Arts. All of the following characters utilize special chakra armor that is unique to the ninja of Yukigakure. This armor allows them to increase the power of their chakra, and also enables them to negate the effects of opposing ninjutsu and genjutsu, as well as a limited amount of physical attacks. In addition, it also comes with various attachments, such as wings or extending arms (the attachments vary, as each armor is customized for the user).

Doto Kazahana
A break of some messages (not in German Enigma, however) led to the defeat of the Italian Navy at Capa Matapan, and was preceded by another 'fortunate' search plane sighting. British Admiral Cunningham also did some fancy footwork at a hotel in Egypt to prevent Axis agents from taking note of his movements and deducing that some major operation was planned. Ultra information was of considerable assistance to the British at El Alamein in Western Egypt in the long running battle with the Afrika Korps under Rommel. Intelligence from signals between Adolf Hitler and General Günther von Kluge was of considerable help during the campaign in France just after the Allied landings on D-Day, particularly in regard to estimations of when German reserves would be committed to battle.

The boss of Nadare Roga, Mizore Fuyukuma and Fubuki Kakuyoku, he started the revolt in the Land of Snow in search of the Treasure, which turned out to be a generator that transformed the Land of Snow in to a Land of Spring. He was hit directly by Naruto's Spiraling Sphere which was enhanced by the Seven-Colored Chakra, throwing him with great force onto one of the Generator Walls. Whether this was the death of him was not confirmed. He appears in the Japanese version of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 as a playable character, but was omitted from the English version before Bandai Namco realized the movie would be released the same month as the game.
By 1945 almost all German Enigma traffic (Wehrmacht, Navy, Luftwaffe, Abwehr, SD, etc.) could be decoded within a day or two, yet the Germans remained confident of its security. Had they been better informed, they simply could have, and surely would have, changed systems, forcing Allied code-breakers to start over. The Germans considered Enigma traffic so secure that they openly discussed their plans and movements, handing the Allies a huge amount of very useful information. However, Ultra information was also misused or ignored at times. For instance, Rommel's intentions just prior to the Battle of the Kasserine Pass in North Africa had been suggested by Ultra, but this was not taken into account by the Americans. Likewise, Ultra traffic suggested an attack in the Ardennes in 1944, but the Battle of the Bulge was a surprise to the Allies because the information was disregarded.

Fubuki Kakuyoku
After the War, the American TICOM project teams found and detained a considerable number of German crypto personnel. Among the things they learned was that German cryptographers, at least, understood very well that Enigma messages might be read; they knew Enigma was not unbreakable. They just found it impossible to imagine anyone going to the immense effort required. (See Bamford's Body of Secrets in regard to the TICOM missions immediately after the War.)

Fubuki Kakuyoku is a Snow kunoichi that accompanied Nadare Roga and Mizore Fuyukuma. She fought against Sasuke Uchiha, and was largely successful in countering the majority of his fire jutsu, including his Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique with her Ice Prison Technique and his Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique with the wings on her armor. She was ultimately defeated when Sasuke sent her flying on a collision course with Lion Combo into her partner, Mizore Fuyukuma, to which their chakra armor reacted in the form of an explosion. It is unknown if she is dead.
A most intriguing alleged, and still open, use of Ultra information may have been in the Lucy spy ring. This was an extremely well informed, and rapidly responsive, ring which was able to get information 'directly from the German General Staff Headquarters' -- often on specific request. The allegation is that it was, in major part, a way for the British to get Ultra information to the Soviets in a way which appeared to have come from highly placed espionage, and not from cryptanalysis of German radio traffic. The Lucy ring was operated by, apparently, one man, Rudolf Roessler, and was initially treated with considerable suspicion by the Soviets when it began to operate. The information it provided was accurate and timely, and Soviet agents in Switzerland (including Alexander Rado, the director) eventually took it quite seriously.

Magic and Purple in Europe
* "Fubuki" (吹雪) means blizzard or snowstorm in Japanese.
In the Pacific Theatre, the Japanese cypher machine called "Purple" was unrelated to the Enigmas, but was used for the highest level Japanese diplomatic traffic. It was also cracked, though, by the US Army's Signal Intelligence Service. Some of the Purple traffic was very useful elsewhere during the War, for instance the very detailed reports by the Japanese Ambassador to Germany which were sent to Japan using the Purple machine. Some of these included reviews of German strategy and intentions, some were reports of direct inspections (in one case of the Normandy beach defenses!) by the Ambassador, and some were reports of long interviews with Hitler.

Mizore Fuyukuma
The Japanese are said to have obtained an Enigma machine as early as 1937, although whether they were given it by their German allies, or bought a commercial version which, except for the plugboard and the actual rotor wirings, was essentially the German Army / Air Force machine, is disputed.

Mizore Fuyukuma is a Snow ninja who accompanied Nadare Roga and Fubuki Kakuyoku. His method of fighting included the use of a snowboard for quick movement, his chakra armor, and a metal arm that could fire cables or be launched at a target and retracted. He was eventually defeated by a trap set up by Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha. He survived Sakura's Sakura Blizzard Technique, which distracted him, while Sasuke used his Lion Combo to send his partner, Fubuki Kakuyoku, into a collision with him. ==Public disclosure of Ultra==
For 29 years after the war the existence of Ultra remained an official British (and American) secret. Since it was British and, later, American work which had been most significant, this meant that the significance of Enigma decrypts in the War remained unknown. Discussion by either the Polish or French of Enigma breaks early on would have been uninformed for most of the War. Nevertheless, the first public disclosure of breaks into Enigma traffic was made by French Intelligence officer Gustave Bertrand in the book he published in 1973. With that release, pressure to discuss the rest of the Enigma/Ultra story (mostly a British and later American one) mounted.

Trivia
The ban was not lifted until 1974, the year that a key participant on the distribution side of the Ultra project, Frederick William Winterbotham, published The Ultra Secret. Wintherbotham's book is very interesting, but is in error on many points. He worked on the operation to distribute Ultra to end consumers and, based on the evidence of his book, did not understand much about cryptography. Peter Calvocorressi's book (Top Secret Ultra) is better written and more responsible. He was involved in Bletchley Park's intelligence analysis of decrypted traffic, working between the codebreakers and Winterbotham's distribution operation.

Nadare Roga was a Snow ninja who seems to have previously met and fought Kakashi. At that previous time, Kakashi was forced to retreat since he could not defeat all the Snow ninja alone. Nadare frequently mocks Kakashi because of this. Due to his chakra armor, he was able to counter Kakashi's Lightning Blade. However, Kakashi kills him in battle through taijutsu, crashing him into the rocks underneath. He seemed to be overly arrogant, even naming one of his jutsu after himself (although his name does describe the technique rather accurately).

Trivia
That Enigma had been broken during the War remained secret until the late 1960s. The important contributions to the War effort of a great many people remained unknown, and they were unable to share in the glory of what is likely one of the chief reasons the Allies won the war as quickly as they did.

The Phantom Ruins in the Depths of the Earth enemies
After the war ended, the British and Americans sold surplus Enigmas and Enigma-like machines to many countries around the world, who remained convinced of the security of this remarkable cipher machine. Their traffic was not so secure as they believed, which is, of course, one reason the British and Americans made the machines available. Switzerland even developed its own version of the Enigma, the NEMA and used it for decades (at least into the late 70s).
These enemies have only appeared in the Naruto movie The Phantom Ruins in the Depths of the Earth. Each of them use powers they get from a powerful stone known as the Gelel stone.

Fugai
Some information did get out however. In 1967, David Kahn published The Codebreakers, which described the capture of a Naval Enigma machine from U-505 in 1945. He went on to mention, somewhat in passing, that Enigma messages were already being read by that time, requiring 'machines that filled several buildings'. By 1970, newer computer-based ciphers were becoming popular as the world increasingly turned to computerised communications, and the usefulness of Enigma copies (and rotor machines generally) rapidly decreased. It was decided at this point to "let the cat out of the bag", and reports about some of Bletchley Park's operations were permitted in 1974.

Fugai served as a knight in Haido's supposed "Utopian" army. Fugai could change her form to that of a wolf, most likely due to the influence of the Gelel stone. She is killed when Sakura lured her under a set of bars that reflected her howl back at her, stunning her and leaving her unable to escape as the bars collapsed on her.

Haido is a warlord searching for the Gelel stone vein. This mysterious ore, which had life-giving powers, is located south of the Land of Wind. By claiming that he wished to establish an utopia, he was able to recruit many followers. However, this is a facade for his true desire: to use the Gelel stones to become all powerful. He was able to turn Temujin's fellow orphans into animated suits of armor, enabling him to build an army. After he obtained the Gelel Stone, he underwent a monstrous transformation, similar to the second level of Sasuke Uchiha's cursed seal. However, thanks to Temujin's help, Naruto was finally able to kill him with the Twin Spiraling Sphere.
Many accounts of the Enigma story, and of other World War II crypto happenings, have been published. Several are unreliable in many respects about WWII cryptography. This can be traced to several causes:
<br clear="all" />

Kamina
*First, not all of the authors were in a position to know. Several books have been published by those on the Ultra distribution side at Bletchley Park, but work there was very seriously compartmentalised, making it difficult to credit some episodes when they are due only to such a source. The story about Churchill deliberately not interfering with a Luftwaffe bombing of Coventry which was known through Enigma decrypts is one such. Peter Calvocoressi's book, Top Secret Ultra contains a sounder account of the episode.

Kamina served as a knight in Haido's supposed "Utopian" army. Kamina could change her form to that of a bat, most likely due to the influence of the Gelel stone. Additionally, she was able to utilize a genjutsu which she tried to kill Kankuro with. After she got into a small fight with Shikamaru, Kankuro was able to trap her and kill her with the Black Secret Technique Machine Two Shot.
*Second, the cryptanalytic work was tricky and quite technical. It requires someone with a considerable understanding of cryptanalysis, and of Enigma, to adequately comprehend -- or explain -- how either worked.
<br clear="all" />

Ranke
*Third, documents have been 'lost' in secret archives. Those not actually lost have taken decades to be released to the public, and some are, presumably, still to be released. In any case, none of them were originally written, nor made available later, with historical clarity in mind; considerable perspective is required to make reasonable use of them.

Ranke served as a knight in Haido's supposed "Utopian" army. Ranke could change her form to increase her power when using Taijutsu. She fought with Gaara, and after he used Thunder God of Sand to neutralize her lightning attacks, he killed her with Desert Imperial Funeral.
*Fourth, governments have chosen to keep secret or release information to serve their own purposes, not historical accuracy or completeness.

Mikazuki Island's Animal Panic! enemies
*Fifth, several authors have had agendas which took precedence over accuracy in their reports. At least one incident is known of whole-cloth fabrication regarding British cryptanalytic progress on a particular World War II Japanese Navy cryptosystem. The account was claimed to have been written from the unpublished memoirs of an Australian cryptanalyst, but substantive parts of the published version appear to have been simply invented.
These enemies have only appeared in the Naruto movie Mikazuki Island's Animal Panic!.

Shabadaba
*Sixth, many writers have not done their research. The exact fate of the Enigma spy "Asch" was not publicly known till Hugh Sebag-Montefiore tracked his daughter down, circa 1999. Her account can be found in his book.
* Age: ? (deceased)

A former friend of the king of the Land of the Moon, Shabadaba was the king's minister, and unlike the king's noble visions, only desired wealth and power. He betrays his friend and hires Ishidate, Kongou, and Karenbana to assassinate the king and his son, Michiru, to inherit the title of king. In the end, an enraged Ishidate plans on killing Naruto and Hikaru. Shabadaba tries to remind him of his mission to kill Michiru, resulting in Ishadate grabbing Shabadaba's collar with his Petrification Glove, turning him into stone. As Naruto defeats Ishidate, the force of his attack propels the ninja into Shabadaba, shattering him.
As with other history, but more than for most, the history of cryptography, especially its recent history should be read carefully, due to its complexity and to possibly confusing or misleading agendas.

Akahoshi was the transitional leader after the death of the Third Hoshikage. He was the one who requested help from Konoha for the guarding of the star. However, in reality, he and two unnamed henchmen were actually the murderers of the Third Hoshikage, due to the Third's refusal to allow anymore Star training due to the negative effect it had on the shinobi's using it. He was ridiculously fanatical about his ambitions that the Star Village should join the five Kage Countries. He also stated that he was well aware of the negative effects of the star and did not use it to train himself, which turned out to be an act of selfishness.

He ended up fighting Natsuhi three times (the last time he killed her), kidnapping Sumaru, and sentencing the Konoha ninja which he hired to death in order to achieve the means of persuading the citizens of Hoshigakure to proclaim him the Fourth Hoshikage. However, his ceremony was interrupted by Sumaru, who wept over his dead mother. To counter this, he caused the star training building to collapse, burying Sumaru in it yet somehow not killing him. The next interruption was a planned presentation by Mizura and Hekuto to prove the flaws of the Star Training, which was successful and caused the citizens to turn on Akahoshi. Frustrated and unsupported, he infused himself with the star, thinking he would become immensely powerful. Instead, the star knocked his senses unconscious and its violent energies took over his body, causing him to attack anyone in sight. Naruto, whose hands were guided by the spirit of Natsuhi, killed him minutes later with Rasengan.

Aoi Rokusho is a diabolical ninja who was hired by the Wagarashi clan. His job was to stop Idate, a runner for the Wasabi clan, from winning the Todori Burning Fire Race. The story behind Aoi is much deeper though as he was a previously a Konoha Jonin.
Aoi betrayed Konoha by having his student, Idate, steal two special treasures from Konoha under the false pretense of his student becoming a Chunin. These treasures were the Raijin Sword and a special scroll of forbidden jutsu. After this event, Aoi defected to Amegakure but was followed by Idate's brother, Ibiki Morino, who then was caught by Amegakure and tortured to translate the scroll. Ibiki not only resisted the torture, but managed to escape with the scroll. After this incident, Aoi remained with Amegakure upon which he became a Jonin. As a member of Amegakure he performed various odd jobs and demeaning tasks that other ninja wouldn't bother with.
A short account of World War II cryptology is Battle of Wits by Stephen Budiansky; it covers more than just the Enigma story. Hugh Sebag-Montefiore's recent Enigma: the Battle for the Code, which focuses largely on Naval Enigma, includes some previously unknown information&mdash;and many photographs of individuals involved; Bletchley Park had been his grandfather's house before it was purchased for GC&CS. David Kahn's Seizing the Enigma is essentially about the solution of Naval Enigma, based on seizures of German naval vessels; British success in the endeavor almost certainly saved Britain from defeat in the crucial Battle of the Atlantic and thereby made the United States' entry into the war's European theater possible. A brief description of the Enigma, as well as other codes/ciphers, can be found in Simon Singh's The Code Book. Information on British cryptology appears in the official history of British intelligence in World War II, edited by Sir Harry Hinsley; he also edited a one-volume collection of memoirs by participants in the British cryptological effort. Marian Rejewski himself wrote a number of papers on his 1932 break into Enigma and his subsequent work on the cipher well into World War II with his fellow mathematician-cryptologists, Jerzy R&oacute;&#380;ycki and Henryk Zygalski; most of Rejewski's papers appear in the 1984 book by W&#322;adys&#322;aw Kozaczuk, Enigma: How the German Machine Cipher Was Broken, and How It Was Read by the Allies in World War Two, which remains the standard reference on the crucial foundations laid by the Poles for World War II Enigma decryption.
Aoi's skills mainly involve his umbrella and needles, which he can use to pin opponents with. His needles are commonly dipped in poison, making them even more lethal. What sets him apart from other ninja is his use of the special Raijin sword, which he stole from Konoha. Though he is fast, most of his techniques are fairly basic.

At the end of the arc, Aoi's Raijin was broken and he is knocked off a cliff by Naruto. It is unknown if he survived, but he himself states earlier in the episode that anyone knocked off will surely die, and unlike Sakura and Sasuke, he is unable to slow his descent at all before hitting the waters below.

Gennou
* Age: ? (deceased)

Gennou is a legendary trap-making ninja from Tonbogakure. Even in his old age, merely hours before his naturally-caused death, he was an excellent shinobi. He was able to set up a multi-layered trap that fooled the ANBU, Hokage, and even nearly stumped Shikamaru Nara. He could also match Rock Lee in taijutsu, albeit using a smoke bomb to even the odds. He was able to do all this while suffering from a pain so intense that Ino was forced to release her Mind Body Switch Technique immediately upon entering his body.

While Jiraiya led an attack on Tonbogakure thirty years previously, Gennou was in Konoha planting explosives. Tonbogakure called a cease-fire and was later annihilated by another village, however, and he never got the chance to use them. Gennou returned thirty years under the guise of a carpenter from Sunagakure. He attempted to finish his job by detonating the Hokage Monument, which would have buried the village under rock and sand, partly because he was near death and didn't want such an elaborate trap to go to waste, though mainly for revenge for the death of his son, who died in the war with his village.

However, upon returning to finish the job, Gennou met Naruto Uzumaki, who deeply resembled Gennou's late son (he told Naruto it was his still-living grandson). Without telling anybody, Gennou deviated from his original plan and turned it into a game. He acted out his original elaborate plan, down to every last twist and detail, but he rigged the bombs in the monument, as well as any other potentially devastating trap, so that they would barely leave a mark or not work whatsoever. Gennou wanted the Konoha 11, especially Naruto, to enjoy solving the "treasure hunt" he always wanted to plan for his grandson.

The Kamizuru clan is a clan of bee users from Iwagakure who were once very well known. Years before the initial setting of the series, they attempted to lead an invasion force into Konoha, only to be repelled and largely killed by the more experienced Aburame clan. Apparently, the first Tsuchikage was one of its members.

Hoping to find the Tsuchikage's secret scroll, which is full of kinjutsu (forbidden techniques) for bug user ninja, the last three of the clan set out to find the Bikochu. Naruto and Team Kurenai were also looking for the Bikochu, and thus the two eventually battled. All three were defeated by Hinata Hyuga using her recently perfected technique. Their leader attempted one last-ditch attack with a giant summoned bee, but was repelled by Naruto's Spiraling Sphere.

Raiga Kurosuki is a former member of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, like Zabuza Momochi and Kisame Hoshigaki (both of whom he apparently disliked, along with the rest of the members) were. Unlike those two, however, he wields two pike-like swords which he uses in a manner similar to lightning rods to attract and channel lightning and electricity. Raiga's shorter swords seem a little out of place when compared to the other swords seen thus far, but he can connect them at their hilts to form a larger double-bladed sword, effectively increasing the weapon's size and allowing him to perform different and more powerful jutsus. Like the other two Swordsmen, Raiga was very arrogant and overconfident. He was also somewhat mentally unsound.

Raiga was a former ANBU of Kirigakure. It was on a mission that he encountered the disabled Ranmaru. Raiga and Ranmaru promised each other to be "two in one" under Raiga's name. Ranmaru became Raiga's eyes and ears, and Raiga became Ranmaru's arms and legs. He used Ranmaru's kekkei genkai in much the same manner as Zabuza used Haku's, although Raiga seemed to genuinely care for Ranmaru throughout their partnership, whereas Zabuza treated Haku as a mere tool.

Later, Raiga took over a village and forced the inhabitants to work for him. Anyone who would disobey would be punished by being buried alive, which Raiga appropriately nicknamed a "funeral". Raiga had a fondness for funerals, frequently referring to them during battle and otherwise. His love of funerals comes from the fact that whilst a living person is capable of hatred, lies and betrayal, people tend to remember the good in any given individual once he or she has passed away. A few villagers managed to escape and ask Konoha for assistance, which was sent in the form of Team Guy and Naruto Uzumaki.

At first, Naruto was able to resist all of his electric attacks. Team Guy and Naruto Uzumaki stopped Raiga and nearly killed him, but Ranmaru used his chakra to revive him.

After being revived, Raiga revealed the true source of his power: lightning itself. By channeling lightning through his pikes, he effectively gained a much more potent and virtually unlimited energy source for his electric attacks. After defeating Team Guy, as well as a drunken Rock Lee, and seemingly defeating Naruto, Naruto defeated him again, and Ranmaru tried to convince him to end the fighting. Believing Ranmaru to have turned against him, and thus losing the only person he cared for, Raiga threw himself off the cliff and with one final bolt of lightning, gave himself his own funeral.

Shiitenshounin
A group of four ninja from the Takumi (weapon-smiths') Village who sought to capture Gaara, each wielding a unique Takumi weapon. They wanted to use the chakra of the One-Tailed Shukaku, which was sealed in Gaara, to revive Seimei, the founder, and so-called "Ultimate Weapon" of Takumi Village. The Takumi Village was renowned for its ninja-weaponry production, with their ultimate desire being that by selling their fearsome weapons to all the Hidden Villages, they would end the need for trained shinobi, being able to gain dominance over the other Countries through how vast their weapons arsenal was, not how skilled their shinobi were. The Takumi Village was constantly pillaged however, as the other Countries saw it as a great threat, and many of their powerful weapons were lost. If the Shiitenshounin revived Seimei, and possessed a limitless source of 'ultimate chakra' in the form of Shukaku, they would be unstoppable and ultimately succeed in taking over the 5 Great Nations and avenging the Village itself. All four members are deceased, having fallen to the hands of the team of Konoha and Sand genin.

He was killed when Gaara turned his Armor of Sand into a stake-like weapon, impaling him through the chest, but not before injuring Rock Lee with his mace.

*Seimei, the 'Ultimate Weapon' of the Takumi Village. Jin 'summoned' his sarcophagus, that was buried within a nearby cliff wall, and offered his body as a container for Seimei's soul. Having been revived, he combined all the Takumi Weaponry into one 'Ultimate Weapon' which he wore. He was eventually defeated by Gaara after he broke free from the metal dome which was used to siphon the Shukaku's chakra. Although partly transformed into his human-sized Shukaku Form, Gaara forcefully reversed the transformation and converted his sand into a Spear-like weapon, before hurling it and impaling Seimei, shattering the Takumi Weaponry and killing him in the process.

Watari ninja
The Watari ninja are a ninja group without attachments to any hidden village who decided to unite their forces in order to become stronger. They travel from country to country, learning or stealing jutsu from other shinobi whenever they can. Because of that, many of their jutsu are copies or modified versions of already known ones. They often can't use their copied attacks efficiently or effectively, and, in many occasions, have to depend on illusions such as trap wires, movie projectors, and other underhanded tricks.

They attempted to take over the Bird County through use of a fake ghost known as the Norimusha and the assassination of the entire line of feudal lords. They actually succeeded in doing the latter, but the twin sister of the dying feudal lord assumed his place. They were defeated through a combined effort between Neji Hyuga, Tenten, Naruto Uzumaki, and Kakashi Hatake.

Nagare
Nagare is the Watari ninja who fought against Kakashi Hatake. Using the Leech All Creation: Attack Prevention Technique to take on the properties of stone, he can use the Assimilated Rock Blizzard (Dōka Yahumuki) to use stones as projectiles, and the Assimilated Rock Tank (Dōka Sanseki), a facsimile of the Akimichi clan's Human Bullet Tank, to expand using stone and crush the opponent while rolling with great force. He could also control rock powder similarly to Gaara's sand, engulfing the opponent with rock powder by using Assimilated Desert Coffin and crushing them with Assimilated Desert Funeral. He is later defeated, but not killed, by Kakashi's Lightning Blade.

Oki
* Seiyu: Kōji Totani

Oki the migrating ninja was a ninja that masqueraded as Mousou in the Land of Birds. In disguise, he served as Chief Advisor to the Daimyo there. He was defeated after a brief battle with Naruto. He leads the Watari group. Despite being its leader, Oki's skills do not seem on par with those of his group. Many of his techniques are half-baked copies of the actual versions (his "summoning technique" activating a projector is just one example). His strategy seems to involve mainly deception, which allows him to overcome stronger foes.

Broken Enigma messages are still extremely valuable today, as they provide some of the best surviving direct accounts of the Nazi war effort.
