“Check on It” is a song written, produced and recorded by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles for Destiny's Child's greatest hits album, #1's; it also appears on select international versions of Knowles' second studio album B’Day. It was co-written by Slim Thug (who is a featured artist on the song), Sean Garrett, and co-produced by Swizz Beatz. The song is also included on the soundtrack to the 2006 film The Pink Panther, in which Beyoncé co-stars. CheckOnItSample.ogg
Song Information
Beyonce has stated on many occasions that she was surprised at how successful the single has become, because she felt that it was very simple and probably wouldn't catch on like some of her other hits. Beyonce also stated that the song started out as a joke, and that the title 'Check On It' was jokingly used with her and her management before they decided to turn it into a full out song.
Originally, the song first appeared on the Destinys Child #1s album as an album track. This confused many fans when the song was heard, as they did not know whether or not the song was a solo Beyonce song, or whether it was a Destinys Child song. Many speculate that originally it was intended to be Destinys Childs send off song, but then Mathew Knowles decided to trim it down to a Beyonce solo, to be used for her upcoming Pink Panther movie which was shot in 2004 and kept getting delayed until it finally got released in 2006. With Pink Panther finally settelling on a release date only a couple of months after the release of the Destinys Child #1s, Beyonce's management thought it would be nice to coincide the song with the movie. Rumored tention between Destinys Child was also spreading with the public, as it was reported that Kelly and Michelle weren't informed about the song becoming a Beyonce solo and only found out about it the day she was absent to a scheduled Destinys Child event and instead was off shooting the video. Many fans also note that at the beginning of the song, Swizz Beatz can be heard in the introduction saying 'Swizz...Beatz...DC...Slim Thugh' and note that it's proof that the song was intended to be a Destinys Child song.
There is also debate amongst fans on whether or not the other two members can be heard in the song. Some fans argue that the second verse is sung by Kelly, while others argue that it's just Beyonce but does closely resemble Kellys voice. Others argue that Michelle's voice can be heard in the background. No proof has been provided thus far on whether or not Kelly and Michelle were on the track, but it still confuses many listenrs today.
Commercial release
The song was not originally intended for release as a single from #1's, but it was played by radio stations instead of the first single, "Stand Up for Love" (recorded by all three members of Destiny's Child), which became a commercial failure.
Because of its heavy airplay, "Check on It" managed to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 2005. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in its twelfth week (replacing Nelly's "Grillz"), becoming Beyoncé's third number-one as a solo artist and Slim Thug's first. The single remained at number-one for five consecutive weeks, and it has been certified four times platinum by the RIAA for net shipment of 800,000 paid downloads. It became Beyoncé's fifth top-twenty hit in Canada in late 2005, and in early 2006 it debuted inside the UK top five. Sales in the UK stand at 122,500 copies. On January 31 2006 "Check on It" passed the 200 million audience impressions mark in the United States, according to Mediabase. In February 2006, the song climbed to number twenty on the Canadian BDS airplay chart for a second time.
Music video
As demand grew for the song, Beyoncé shot a music video serving as promotion for both #1's and The Pink Panther. The video was directed by Hype Williams, and premiered on December 16 2005. The video remix features a rap from Bun B and scenes from The Pink Panther. The music video features a "pink" theme, with Beyoncé shown in mostly all pink (to fit in with The Pink Panther). There is video moving in the background while the music video is still maintained in widescreen ratio. Beyoncé's provocative dancing matches the chorus to the song "Oooh boy you looking like you like what you see", which suggests the title of the song. "Check on It" won the 2006 MTV Video Music Award for "Best R&B Video" on August 31, 2006.
