As of the [[census]]{{GR|2}} of 2000, there were 946 people, 354 households, and 236 families residing in the city. The [[population density]] was 200.7/km² (520.8/mi²). There were 432 housing units at an average density of 91.6/km² (237.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 26.43% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 73.15% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.11% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.11% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], and 0.21% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.32% of the population.

There were 354 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.5% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 29.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.35.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,114, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $21,346 for females.
